Checking on webmastertools, it shows no data for any links to my site. Is there something I havent activated? Can see on the list of symbiosites, that mine is the only one without a version number.

Have you only just set your site up? You need to wait for google to crawl other sites to find yours.

google's WMT is not the best tool for checking backlinks.
try http://moonsy.com/backlinks_checker/

This is probably  the best thread to announce your site once it is open for business

I've added your site to http://symbiostock-search.com database

something's strange though - there's no version listed in your symbiocard.xml file.  the rest of the data looks fine

Symbiostock people don't know, that your site is existing. You have only one site in your network, nobody has yours, so it is not present in network directory. I have your site indexed in http://symbiostock.info, but only few days.

Give some info about your site in this thread:
http://www.microstockgroup.com/symbiostock-network-building/networking-what-are-you-looking-for-in-a-match/
or like here:
http://www.microstockgroup.com/symbiostock-general/my-symbiostock-site/msg332828/?topicseen#new

Some people will add your site to network and links start to appear :)

http://cascoly.com/symbio/list.asp?list=65

now shows portfolio focus, and specialties for all sites - but  a number of folks haven't filled in all the possible information

also check the promoted keywords: http://cascoly.com/symbio/list.asp?list=31  and again some folks aren't promoting any keywords

try http://moonsy.com/backlinks_checker/

I tried this one, same result 0 Backlinks, despite I ahve place links on G+ and other websites i run. Guess it just needs more time to get indexed.

Yes I noticed that as well. No new updates were showing for the theme on WP, despite I was on an old version. So I downloaded the latest version and installed it myself, just keeping all my old CSS files not to loose the formatting.

There have been, and likely will be updates coming.  If you have a lot of CSS files/ changes you should be using a Child theme, not the main theme.  check out  http://www.symbioguides.com/  for details.

If you don't use child theme then you will loose all your changes when you update to newer version of Symbio theme.

It sounds like he makes a backup copy and then copies it over every time.

Which is probably the cause for your version number missing.  That is listed in the main css file.  Not updating those will eventually cause problems, which is why a child theme is still a better practice.
