Title: First Paid Plugin: Symbiostock Image Sitemap Generator.
Post by: Leo Blanchette on June 19, 2013, 04:44
See the product page here:

http://www.symbiostock.com/products-page/upgrades-and-plugins/symbiostock-image-sitemap/

This gives you a new option in the ladybug menu :D

This gives you very useful sitemap, which notifies Google of your image previews, their license, title, and content. The image sitemap will help images to rank better. Usually Google must rank an image based on what it sees in the page - which can vary based on the page's content and how the webmaster lays it out. This however takes away that guessing game, and serves the info in a perfectly machine-understood form.

Here is a sampling (for those who are curious) how the info is given to Google:

Code: [Select]

<urlset xmlns="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9" xmlns:image="http://www.google.com/schemas/sitemap-image/1.1">

    <loc>http://localhost/symbiostock/image/glossy-blue-robot-presenting-idea/</loc>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>http://localhost/symbiostock/wp-content/uploads/symbiostock_rf_content/4185-glossy-blue-robot-presenting-idea.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Glossy Blue Robot Presenting Idea</image:title>
<image:caption>A bright white and blue robot presenting an idea in an attractive manner.</image:caption>
      <image:license>http://localhost/symbiostock/end-user-license-agreement/</image:license>
    </image:image>

Its perfectly valid and recognized, as its a schema developed by Google.

Thanks purchased. :)
Is the license per user or per site? As I'm thinking about to deploy a second site with different more niche content once I have finished my universal Symbiostock-site.

You can apply it to all your sites :)

BTW I should mention support and upgrades are free as always.

Post by: Leo Blanchette on June 19, 2013, 15:07
Yes, it plays nice with YOAST. YOAST does everything else. This sitemap takes care of the unique need of your stock images.

It gives search engines this specific information:

So lets say you have a page loaded with stuff - widgets, your author bio, related images, latest images, etc. The image page is already built in such a way to keep the guessing game low for the search engine. This rules out any issues of confusion or diluting of your SEO due to "noise" that may exist in the page due to people's different page layouts and needs.
Other benefits:To set it up you simply upload it as a plugin and you will see the option appear for the sitemap in your ladybug menu. Simply follow the instructions from there.

The reason why I made this plugin is because its actually an important need - and one of the few that YOAST cannot address completely.

great plugin -- a few glitches though - first 2 are just documentation:

--------------------
'visit plugin site' link sends to symbiostock.com but no mention there of the plugin

------------------------------------------
'submit to google' is confusing - it takes you to the page that TELLS you how to submit but doesnt actually do anything

-----------------------------------------------
when submitting, i tested the sitemap and got

>>>>>>>
This is not a valid URL. Please correct it and resubmit.

Parent tag: image
Tag: loc

line: 14300

<<<<<<<

here's the image that caused the error (on the image:loc line)

    <loc>http://cascoly-images.com/pix/image/fresh-vegetable-stalls-2/ (http://cascoly-images.com/pix/image/fresh-vegetable-stalls-2/)</loc>

------------------
i took out the bad line and then got an error in a caption line elsewhere; i dont remember if google processes the rest of the sitemap when it finds an error

Title: Re: First Paid Plugin: Symbiostock Image Sitemap Generator.
Post by: cascoly on June 19, 2013, 16:36
I looked at the image that was causing the problem & found there was no actual image there - this may have come in during one of the earlier versions where editing (in a second session )while uploading or processing caused problems

meanwhile the 2nd error it found (test said ok, but submit tossed the error)

    <loc>http://cascoly-images.com/pix/image/eggplant-and-other-vegetables-2/ (http://cascoly-images.com/pix/image/eggplant-and-other-vegetables-2/)</loc>

<image:license>http://cascoly-images.com/pix/end-user-license-agreement/ (http://cascoly-images.com/pix/end-user-license-agreement/)</image:license>
    </image:image>

bold shows the error line -- looked at image and couldnt see anything wrong, but there was a space after 'India' in the line above, so might be an non-printing char. anyway, edited to be sure, re gen'd sitemap and now google seems to be content

It might be as simple as a whitespace stripping. Thanks for letting me know. If anyone else sees any errors let me know. It should be very rare.

Edit: Whoops...Leo beat me to it :)

Are you uploading the .zip file or are you unzipping first? When uploading a plugin to wordpress you don't want to unzip it. Upload the .zip file as is and you should be good to go. Hope that helped.

It appears the preview is missing for those -- which is actually a legit error from the site. If the value is empty I should put something generic in there.

Awesome images btw! Racoon dog? http://shaunwstock.com/image/racoon-dog/ (http://shaunwstock.com/image/racoon-dog/) Wow, didn't know they existed!

Heres the source pages:

http://shaunwstock.com/image/large-panoram-of-lincolnshire-field-with-rain-clouds-2/ (http://shaunwstock.com/image/large-panoram-of-lincolnshire-field-with-rain-clouds-2/)

http://shaunwstock.com/image/many-of-blue-moon-jelly-fish/ (http://shaunwstock.com/image/many-of-blue-moon-jelly-fish/)

If you don't mind waiting, I'm working on some more memory efficient stuff to handle large images, which is apparently what these were. Don't delete them! Simply reprocess them when I put out a new update.

hi Leo, can this plugin auto detect my content description and apply it to meta description? I am using Yoast seo now, but I have to manually copy my text from content to my meta description.

I already got Leo to implement Excerpts a while back which allows the Yoast plugin to then do this process for you.

Just go to the Yoast Plugin, Titles & Meta tab, then under Post Types find "Symbiostock Images". In the meta description template part put "%%excerpt%%" (without the "") and it will auto generate it for you. Just be aware, it doesnt visually show up in the meta description box on the image edit page, it just applies it in the background. You may need to tick "Excerpts" to be shown on the Screen Options dropdown on the image edits page.

Hope that helps.

It work! The "Exerpts" was ticked by default, I can't see the text appear in my image edit page "meta description", but I can see the word counter is counting and also can see at the source code my meta description is added. thank you!

yesterday my sitemap.xml was about 930K and after submitting it google said1637 images pending

this morning there were only 24 images pending, and sure enough, my sitemap was only 34K

i regen'ed the sitemap and it was 862K - resubmitted
the google test said there were 1637 images, but when i then submtted it, it was back to 24 images and the filesize had reverted to 34K

i regen'ed the sitemap again and it was 862K & resubmitted to google

----------------
after clicking "gen sitemap", it processes and refreshes the screen - but no indication anything actually happened -- need to add a timestamp or otherwise show that it actually did something

By your reply above, do you mean the newest version of your plugin now supports auto-updates? If so I will get onto buying it.

Post by: Leo Blanchette on June 25, 2013, 19:11
Yes, it supports auto-updates, but its unlikely I will have to do much since its does it job dead-on. I might put a new schema into it allowing more recognition of things like news images, or other semantic info. But for now - its 100% on target.

There should be a button to "generate sitemap", which you click.

Then you will have a field with the sitemap link that you click, and it auto-selects. Simply paste that into google webmaster tools.

Other than that, is something malfunctioning?

Do we need to "Generate Sitemap" every time after we've added new images or will the sitemap update itself once it has been created?

For anyone using sitemaps, a new update is available.

Dashphoto gave us an opportunity to see how LARGE portfolios are handled in Symbiostock.

I did have to make an adjustment however, to how sitemaps are handled. Instead of generating 1 BIG file containing 11,000 images, we have to create a collection of 2000-image sitemaps with an index sitemap pointing to them:

http://www.dashphoto.eu/symbiostock_image_sitemap.xml (http://www.dashphoto.eu/symbiostock_image_sitemap.xml)

just as a note --= the yoast image sitemap and yours collect just about the same number of I,ages - yoast 'finds' a few more, but your sitemap has been slightly more successful in getting images indexed -- i'm getting 20=25% indexed now, up from 10-15%.

Yoast is referencing the media pages, whereas this one is referencing the actual image page.

If you want to really have some fun check out webmaster tools - its seeing a lot of stuff on that image page. :D

Good question. The service I'm using seems finicky. But you can click and update it even though it doesn't say update ready.

Post by: THP Creative on July 02, 2013, 00:41
Wow, talk about finicky... the update just showed up, so I clicked it, it immediately white screened, then my site was lost, only showing a plain text

"Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute."

Had to follow these steps to fix it:

http://blog.bravi.org/?p=752 (http://blog.bravi.org/?p=752)

TENSE few minutes, but all is back correctly now. And the update didn't work, so I had to do it again. This time it worked

the yoast images-sitemap2.xml references the image pages and the file location using the same references as your plugin -- they present the info differently and produce slightly different results, so it's useful to have both submitting to google

I am so impressed by the speed of my images being indexed, I purchased this plugin today around my local time 1.00pm and immediately submitted sitemap to google webmaster tool, now 11.30pm I have total of 767 images and indexed 418 images. I submitted yoast images sitemap around two months, so far only 223 images indexed.

Thanks Leo!

How did you find out the filename of my sitemap?

I installed the very first version of the plugin which created a full image sitemap at symbiostock_image_sitemap.xml.
A few days later an update of the plugin was published which created the symbiostock_image_sitemap_1.xml file sitemap while having the original symbiostock_image_sitemap.xml file pointing to the new one.
To make sure I'm not missing anything I submitted both sitemap files to Google Webmaster tools.

Maybe Google got confused reading the original sitemap file pointing to the new one and the actual new one.
Actually, I'm a little confused now which one I should submit to Google. Obviously submitting both didn't work very well so far.

based on this message from Leo, look like you just need to submit "symbiostock_image_sitemap.xml" and this will point to all your sitemap.

For anyone using sitemaps, a new update is available.

Everything is fine. The first one is an index. the second one holds the images.

It does that by default. The one linked to is the one you submit. It divides sitemaps into 2000 entries each. Reason being is its more memory efficient.

Guess I was overcomplicating things (as usual). Yes, it worked and I now have my first sitemap. That's cool.

I'm making real progress on my site. Lots more images to get into pages, but what's already there is looking fine. :-)

I have gotten some of those warnings, too. JustHost is owned by the same company that owns BlueHost. Did Justhost go down last week (or the week before) when BlueHost did? I am thinking my issues are caused by BlueHost's server issues.

Just one warning (slow responding URL) but it is on my yoast sitemap. The image generator sitemap is clear of warnings.

I have a little question..

there are 1641 images on my site and the sitemap generated 1640..

so why is that "1" image not included.. is it because something is broken with that image?

It's weird that only 1 image is left out..

Maybe it's your site logo or your author image that's of course not included in the image sitemap.

when I said 1641 images.. I didn't mean just any media.. I meant products for sale.. so it's not the site logo.. I have 1641 images that are for sale..

Yeah, mines showing one less image than there actually is too. I don't think that was the case until I upgraded to the latest version of the symbiostock image sitemap.

Mine is spot on.

Question: I saw that the Symbiostock sitemap XML file contains the entire image description including outgoing links to other sites (YOAST made me do it...). Is that ok?

I'll check into that. Part of becoming a programmer often involves forgetting basic math.

Larry: One dollar.
Prof. Sedletz: You don't know your arithmetic.
Larry: You don't know my father!

hi Leo, can this plugin auto detect my content description and apply it to meta description?

I don't have Excerpts on my Screen Options list. Why?

Yes, there is ezeepics because www.ezeepics.com (http://www.ezeepics.com) is with Photoshelter. But if I search "ezeepics" on Google I get only 4 pages and www.food.ezeepics.com (http://www.food.ezeepics.com) which is my symbiostock site doesn't appear in any of 4.
Normally shoud appear between the first results if indexed correctly. When I search ezeepics I should have first www.ezeepics.com (http://www.ezeepics.com) (and this it is) and second or third result www.food.ezeepics.com (http://www.food.ezeepics.com) (the subdomain - but this is not)

Try the command site:food.ezeepics.com

Many image appears on Google images and 577 urls on Google web.

It takes time for images being indexed. My site is online since june 2013 and 75% of my images are indexed by google so don't worry :)

Too easy to search with food.ezeepics.com :) I need my images to appear between the first results, that's why I'm working now on SEO. Someone can tell me how do I make in order to have in the url of images the words "stock-photo" in the place of the word "image"? Type http://food.ezeepics.com/stock-photo/cupcakes-selective-focus/ (http://food.ezeepics.com/stock-photo/cupcakes-selective-focus/) ? Also what about images ID's? Someone knows how to add them?

I wouldn't worry about IDs, but assuming you JUST uploaded the image you can change its SLUG in the editing area. Its located just under the title field. CAUTION - don't change the slug (url bit) after the image has been indexed. Its like changing your phone number after the girl is finally calling you.

And if it's indexed? Will not be indexed the second time? Leo I know that I can modify the slug, but is not a solution, a professional solution.I don't have time to change slugs for hundreds of images. My question is how to make in order that in automatic I have the words stock-image in the place of images?

Hi Leo

My site isn't a blog. We sell downloadable maps using PayPal. As customers are most likely to buy our maps as a result of a Google image search I have been trying to set up a sitemap that includes images but none of the plugins that I have used (including Yoast) will do this. On various plugin support pages I have noticed some claims that Woothemes/Commerce are incompatible such and such plugin.

Will your image sitemap generator do the trick, is it compatible with WooCommerce and/or Yoast?
