I have found by accident that the search doesnt pick up expressions, only single words without space. In most cases that is ok, but how about common expressions like "New York", which should be very common?

Now I must edit the pics and enter all such expressions as single words, "new" and "york". It is tedious sice I have thousands of pics to upload, and it will also create many unnecessary hits for people who are looking for pictures of York. Maybe a stupid example, but you understand what I mean. Any chance of fixing this, or should I go through all my pics to modify my expressions?

It is a well known issue. The way I have approached it is to leave my compound keywords as they are - New York. I think that almost all of my purchases will be from someone searching Google and finding the specific page and image they are looking for. Google searches all these things very well. Hence, you image will be found for "New York". The chance of a buyer starting at my home page to search for an image is very low, in my view.

It still is an issue which needs to be resolved

It makes sense I guess.

But I have this vision that the network will contribute to traffic on my site, Why would we have a network if that was not the case?

I think the global search is a very good idea, everyone should have it on top in their network directory. Connecting to ten other sites is very limited, but if everyone offered global search, and if it could show more hits, maybe 50 or so, we would really have a good start. Maybe it should even be in the template to encourage everyone to use it.

Cover it all with (new york, new, york)

I have started separating out phrases, it will lead to a lot of "wrong" results in searches but at least they should be found.

One of my worst is probably a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever - it is neither in Nova Scotia nor a duck nor a (bell) tolling

Ha ha, but at least it IS a retriever, one out of five is not so bad ;D. Proves my point, though.

I've stayed with my compound keywords in most cases. I don't want New York pictures to show up as "york" and "St Thomas" to show up as saint. Either we will get a better site search in the future (SYmbiostock.info does a much better search of these compound keywords and that is a likely way into our sites) or Google will be the main way in for most people.

Interestingly, compound searches work in the WordPress Admin -> Royalty Free Images -> Image Keywords search, but not in the regular Image search.

Is their a solution for keyword search? Is it possible to use a different search engine, maybe a WP search plugin?

I mean if I search for "clouds" I think that images with the keyword "cloud" should be found, which doesn't now.
Also compound keywords, which I have a lot, doesn't work as mentioned.

Ron,
I tested it on your site and the compound search does work great. That's maybe the difference between premium and the open source package.

The thing I don't like is the difference between the keyword "clouds" and "cloud".
On my site the keyword "cloud" doesn't find my "clouds" images and the other way around. To be found I need both keywords for every image. Strange!

You are correct, its the premium version with the updated search. But you can configure the search as you please.

It can search whole words, part words, and title and description, but you can toggle the settings as you please.

Just one note of importance: If you set it to search partial words, for example, sex, it will also return images with essex.

So if I search, with the free open source package, cloud doesn't find clouds images and vice versa. If sex returns essex this trick should work with cloud(s).
With the premium package this does work?

That is what I believe to be the case. Just wait for someone else to confirm. I dont want to give out wrong information and cause you to spend 75 dollar on something that doesnt work as expected.

I can confirm that. But I have disabled the partial word search because it generated too much noise.
When someone seaches for "asian" he will not only find asian but also caucasian.

Thanks for taking your time to clarify my search trouble.

As I was looking for a solution I stumbled over "daves-wordpress-live-search" plugin: http://wordpress.org/plugins/daves-wordpress-live-search/
I installed it on my site and it looks great and makes searching fun but it is not the solution I was looking for. I have just started uploading images so I haven't thousands of images but with my 100 images it works nice.
