Sorry guys, but I still have unanswered questions after reading a lot of new threads on 2.5.5.

I am on 2.4.9, I dont use clean theme and I dont use the child theme. I only have SYS 2.4.9

I hope you dont mind:

1. How exactly do I install 2.5.5 without deleting my whole site and all the work done to date?

2. I dont want to rank my images so I leave them all on 2. That should be no problem right?

3. I dont have any nudes, so I leave them all on unrated. But I think its best to set them all on green for future purpose? Correct?

4. How exactly does the filtering system work? How do I need to set my filters if I want to show all results of myself and the network?

5. Is the keyword phrase search problem resolved? If so, I have split up all my compound keywords, and Leo said I could do a back up once the search was fixed. But I have no clue how to do that back up? Any ideas?

Thats it so far.

Thanks
Ronald

In response to question 1:  The purpose of using the child theme, is to do you edits on the child theme, so when you uprade versions, your style/format changes aren't lost.

Thanks, I know that, but I dont have the child theme, so we need to take it from there.

Hi Ron,

Send me a message about what you've done so far and I'll see if I can get your changes converted to a child theme so you won't lose them when you update.

You are  correct on 2 & 3 as far as I know.  I'll have to take a closer look at the filtering system to answer 4.

I'm not sure about 5 maybe someone else can chime in on that?

1. How exactly do I install 2.5.5 without deleting my whole site and all the work done to date?
Very Carefully and with great difficulty going though the code bit by bit to see what has changed
Would advise you (again  :) ) to download and use the free child theme and make changes to that so you will not get this problem again

2. I dont want to rank my images so I leave them all on 2. That should be no problem right?
No problem as far as I can see

3. I dont have any nudes, so I leave them all on unrated. But I think its best to set them all on green for future purpose? Correct?
I would set them to green so that they are found if someone later starts hiding unrated - Leo

4. How exactly does the filtering system work? How do I need to set my filters if I want to show all results of myself and the network?
set them to green  - Leo has done a post on this in the development area

5. Is the keyword phrase search problem resolved? If so, I have split up all my compound keywords, and Leo said I could do a back up once the search was fixed. But I have no clue how to do that back up? Any ideas?

I think this is mentioned somewhere in the forum - probably the closed bug reporting thread

Thank you. So basically, I cant upgrade to 2.5.5 without deleting my site? Thats quite the wrong way to release an update imo. I will stick to 2.4.9 then until I have the child theme installed. Basically it comes down to rebuilding my site completely from scratch, either way. If I understand correctly. That is quite backwards.

I think we are misleading you with a wrong assumption. These responses assumed that you have changed some of the files in the theme in order to change its look or format. If you havent done that - and very few people have - then the upgrade to another release doesn't impact all our work on photographs.

Have you altered any of the core files of the theme - ie modified the code?

So basically you set your site up in an unconventional way, and now when it impacts you in a negative way, you blame the devoloper for poor updates.  I don't get it?  How is it Leo's fault you didn't use the child theme?

What was your objection to installing the Child Theme in the beginning?

It was made pretty clear that:
If you plan to do any customization to the look or functionality of the default Symbiostock theme you must do it in a child theme or all changes will be lost when you upgrade.

I know nothing about css, php or any kind of code and when the discussions go there I'm lost.
But I understood I'd be better off using the Child Theme.

Assuming you haven't changed the theme, then the upgrade is quite safe and easy.

You download the zip file from the Symbiostock.com site and save it on your disc. You go to Themes in the wordpress admin area and activate one of the standard WP themes. Then you delete the Symbiostock theme. Go to install new theme by upload, select the zip file and upload it. Finally, activate it. I can't recall exactly which build needed this final step, but there is no harm in activating the standard WP theme again, then activating Symbio again just in case that step was needed.

What everyone else then does is activate their child theme, which is simply a place to put modications to the appearance of the site.

Has Ron actually said he has modified the theme, or is he talking about losing the work he has done on his images on the site?

Steve, if you look at my site you see the modifications I have done. I am in the understanding the site needs to be deleted to install 2.5.5. How can I not lose all the work if I delete the site from the server.

I dont know how to update my site to 2.5.5 without deleting everything first.

Edit: never mind you just answered it. But it seems I need to activate the child them first, and then do all the work once over on the child theme, and then activate another theme, and then install 2.5.5, then activate everything SYS again.

Ron, have you done changes the CSS or PHP files?  It looks like your site is pretty close to the base theme from what I can see.

Your images, menus license etc won't be deleted because they aren't saved in your theme, they are saved in the database.

Hi Amanda, I made only changes to the footer.php and the archive-image.php. I know those changes will be lost and I probably need to redo a few categories I renamed. But thats ok.

Thanks everyone, I think I have my questions answered. And I sure didnt mean to annoy anyone  ;)

I am going to do an update now and report back to you.

Don't delete your Word Press site... just the Symbiostock Theme.

I suggest a method for you is:

a) Install and activate a child theme.
b) Get it working and looking the way you want ( should be easy if you haven't modded any code)
c) once you are happy with your child, download 2.5.5
d) select another theme ( other than Symbiostock or child)
e) Delete the Symbiostock Theme ( not the child, not the site just the theme in word press)
f) Upload the new theme ( again in wordpress)
g) activate the Child Theme

All the hard work on your images and SEO will not be touched or affected.

Depending on the changes to your Child theme, it may take 15-20 minutes.

Did you activate TwentyTwelve (or one of the defaults) and remove the main theme?

Make sure you don't delete your local copies of the changed files, it should be pretty easy to do your child theme, you will basically include those two files and a css file that imports the original theme style.

Hmm. How important is the "Select another theme" thing? Yesterday I just deleted the Arctium theme without selecting another WP theme before uploading and activating/deactivating the 2.5.5 theme zip. I have the child theme installed.

I don't seem to have any problems so far but wonder if I may have broken something that's going to catch me out at some point.

I managed to update the site, and it seems to be fine, however one thing is messed up and I put a tremendous amount of work in, which seems to be gone now.

All my images are no longer sorted on date/time published. Its all random now. Which basically comes down to 3 weeks of work gone.

Ok, the date and time is still on the image, its just no longer sorted chronologically on the image pages http://semmickphoto.com/image/

So it seems the sort order is random now and constantly changing. So the order of images is different each time. Might be a good thing as it keeps the portfolio a bit lively.

Also the search is not fixed. When I search for Houses of Parliament no images show up.

I'll have to use the split keywords code, which is fine. But that brings me to my last question, Leo said you could restore the keyword sets once they are split up, back to the original sets. Where can I do that?

Thanks again all.

I understand this is actually a feature of the updated version. I find it kind of sad loosing the ability to influence search order by tinkering with date/time. But I think there is hope that this can be turned on again without touching the new ranking mechanism. But for now Leo enjoys his well deserved time off. So let us relax a bit, too. It's summer, after all  :D

Yeah, I agree, it cant be that hard to use a sort ranking which also looks at time and date. But I can wait a month. Its no biggie. The work is not gone. its just not used.

You should be just fine, this is only for the case where the theme needed to be re-uploaded manually, so when you are just doing the easy/standard update it won't be an issue.  Also since you have the child theme it wouldn't have been a problem, but in Ron's case Wordpress won't allow you to delete an active theme so that's why he had to activate another.  Hope that helps!

I guess it is worth mentioning in this thread that when updating the SY theme you also loose all uploaded but not processed (to draft or online) images. A little nuisance that everyone not having updated yet should be better aware of.

Another thing to mention is that if you are using Amanda's child theme, and you update the SY theme, you may/may not lose your custom css changes in your Edit CSS section. When I update, I lose the code, so I have a copy stored. After I do an update, I copy and paste it back in the window. I thought the point of the child theme was so that you didn't lose those edits, but for some reason I lose them every time. No big deal, easy enough to paste back in, but thought new symbio-ites might need a heads-up.

That's really odd I haven't been able to reproduce the issue with my test site, which keeps the custom CSS through updates.

The only thing I can think of is that you have to do the edits under Edit CSS (which is actually a feature of Jetpack) and not under Editor, but it sounds like you are doing it in the proper place so that shouldn't be the issue. Sorry for the trouble!  I would suggest to everyone to keep a back up of any changes you make to any child theme just in case.

Just to dispel any confusion, you are correct that the purpose of a child theme is so that you won't lose edits when the main theme is updated, and that is true if the edits are actually written into the child theme itself. The changes Cathy is referring to is additional custom edits to a child theme added through a Jetpack function. (So they aren't actually being written into the child theme css file.) This is the "proper" way to edit a child theme though in case that also gets updated.

If anyone is curious I have a few screen shots here:

Hmmm, I wonder if it has anything to do with Jetpack, since you mention it is a jetpack function. I do put the code in Edit CSS, but I did not have jetpack activated until after I added your child theme. I have it activated now, but maybe there was an issue there? I don't know, not sure I can track the answer down. I just keep a backup, no big deal.

Here's an odd one -- I added a sub category to Turkey - 'Nemrut Dag' and was then able to edit pix and place them in that new category.

however, when I tried to edit older images that I had placed in 'Turkey', the editor didn't give me any way to add the new subcategory -- it just showed 'Turkey' as checked & out of sequence at the top as it always does.  Only if I uncheck the box for 'Turkey', save, re-edit  then it shows the sub cat 'Nemrut Dag'

Steve,  have you tried the quick edit or bulk edit options for changes like this?

I have but it doesn't fix the problem, since bulk edit doesn't change any existing categories -- the 'turkey' tag is still on  when I want to move  these down to 'nemrut dag'

but, it's a minor problem

There are loads of minor issues. I'll wait patiently.

In the mean time, is downgrading an issue?  I want to downgrade to 2.4.9 to get rid of the ranking system. I dont like how it messes up 3 weeks of work.

My sort order is now random, and changes all the time. And the longer I think about it, the more I dont like it. I have spent 3 weeks in uploading my images and grouping them and publishing them in a chronological order, which is made redundant in 2.5.5.

I want to wait to the next upgrade when/if the ranking can work coincide with the date/time stamp.

Ron, 2.4.9 had bugs, so I don't recommend downgrading. You like to edit php files, so maybe when waiting for new version, edit network-manager.php (in symbiostock/inc/classes/network-manager).

Go to lines 1477-1500. There will be three times 'order'     => 'ASC', change all to 'order'     => 'DESC'.

Then go to comment
//temporary function until everyone has toggled their theme   and is equal to or above 2.4.9

and below change
      if(   $image_rank_update == true ){
to
      if(   $image_rank_update == false ){

now you should have old sort order.

This is temporary change, we don't know, what will be in next versions :)
