Title: DNS question?
Post by: jatrax on August 25, 2013, 15:44
Working on my site: stockphotos.zigzagmtart.com (http://stockphotos.zigzagmtart.com) and making progress but I am stumped with trying to get www.stockphotos.zigzagmtart.com (http://www.stockphotos.zigzagmtart.com) to point to the same place.

www.zigzagmtart.com (http://www.zigzagmtart.com) points to my FAA site and stockphotos.zigzagmtart.com points to my SYS site but how to I get www.stockphotos.zigzagmtart.com (http://www.stockphotos.zigzagmtart.com) to work?  Site is hosted on Godaddy if that matters, I've added the 'A' record for "stockphotos" and there is a cname record for "www" that points to '@' but it does not work.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Work with redirects, or if the host offers a reroute you can set it there.

Thanks Ron,

I had read all through the Godaddy info but since I'm trying to redirect a sub-domain it did not look like it applied.  Just entered the redirect so we'll see if that works.  www.stockphotos (http://www.stockphotos) points to stockphotos.zigzagmtart.com

I used to think CNAME record changes take 24 to 48 hours to be effective because the domain name servers need that time to be updated.

Well, it looks like it is working now.  Assume it took a while to update.

If anyone would check and see if it works for them I would appreciate it.

I am probably missing something but when I click http://www.stockphotos.com/ (http://www.stockphotos.com/) I end up at http://www.stockphotos.com/, (http://www.stockphotos.com/,) nothing redirects for me.

301, "Moved Permanently"

The HTTP response status code 301 Moved Permanently is used for permanent URL redirection, meaning current links or records using the URL that the response is received for should be updated. The 301 response from the Web server should always include an alternative URL to which redirection (http://net-informations.com/q/mis/redirect.html) should occur. If it does, a Web browser will immediately retry the alternative URL. This is the best way to ensure that users and search engines are directed to the correct page. The 301 status code means that a page has permanently moved to a new location.
