Title: Explanation of How Adding Global Search Works
Post by: cathyslife on August 29, 2013, 18:42
2.6.1
I added the global search as a network member. I have 10. I thought that if I did a search for Christmas (mostly because just about everybody has something Christmas-y) that my 9 network members would show results, plus one named Global Symbiostock Search shows up. And it did.

But I am also showing results from 5 other members who are not in my network. Is this how it is supposed to work?

I had only noticed ajt's site but not any others.. then again I never really paid much attention..

I am not sure where those come from..

I think those additional five options are pulling from the "Promoted Keywords" - the 20 words we can add as pointers to our site.  You don't see search results on them too often since it has to have the same promoted keyword as the search but I have seen results a few times.

right, and the promoted words tend to be pretty generic  - out of the hundreds of thousands of keywords in the images, there are only about 1200 promoted keywords (many people don't include them) so the promoted keywords don't really contribute a lot

http://cascoly.com/symbio/list.asp?list=35 (http://cascoly.com/symbio/list.asp?list=35)  shows all promoted keywords

we should find better ways of linking to other sites -- eg, search sites which have a weighted value > 200 for a given keyword.  the weighted value factors in both the # of images on a website and the # of times a keyword is used -- so weighted values between 2 sites can be compared, while # of uses of a keyword cannot

these weighted values can all be calculated & stored so searching will be relatively fast

Makes sense, thanks for the explanations.
