Title: HomePage Plugins
Post by: FiledIMAGE on August 21, 2013, 20:11
Hi,

Thanks to help here and lots of research I have got this far in a couple of days:

http://www.filedimage.com/photography/ (http://www.filedimage.com/photography/)

Lots of formatting and cleaning up to do. Had issues with watermark for ages but happy with it now. Kinda need to get it right first time.

Some quick questions if I may?

1.) Can someone recommend a recent uploads plugin for my home page. I want a quick spiel and recent uploads below that

2.) Im thinking Ill have small pictures with direct links to image categories. Obviosuly thats manual creating a table and adding images etc.

3.) If I want to change fonts, colours and the look of the search button that is done in the CSS of the theme right?

Believe it or not I used to make webpages. No doubt Wordpress makes this simple. Its just where to find options that is not intuitive at times. Then you add plugins and it confuses it more.

I might be able to help a little.
1. There is a Latest Images widget that comes with the SY theme. Look in the widgets section on the left under Appearance. Once you are on the widgets page, you can drag the widget to the right and place it in a couple of different places on your home page. You can use it two different ways. See my home page for one way, or you can add it as a slider.
2. I don't have any advice for this, other than what you said...table with images.
3. Yes, you change fonts, colors etc. using the CSS. It would be wise to create a child theme and make your css edits there. Then when you update the main SY theme, you keep your custom edits. If you use firefox, you can add an extension called Firebug. You can enable Firebug, then select areas of your page and it will help you see what CSS rule has been applied. Then you can find and edit. In Chrome, you can use developers tools under the View menu (this might also be an extension that has to be loaded).

Hope this helps a little, at least point you in some directions.

Ah thanks for that. Of course. Once again i knew id seen it but couldnt remember where. So obviously that sets it to the side or footer as a widget. One would need  another plugin to make it display in main content?

You can put it anywhere on your front page.  I have both Featured and Latest in the middle of my page.  I put mine in the Home Page Below Content area.

You'll have to change your static page to something else other than categories to see it work I do believe but don't quote me.

Wow, Cathy, that's news to me! I do use Firefox and I'd love to be able to do what you describe. I'll check out Firebug.

Gracias!

Go to the link on the left that says Pages.  Click the add new link at the top.

On the right hand side there will be some drop down boxes.  Under template select Home Page CTAs.

Give your new page a title and post some content in it.  And then click publish.

Click on the left hand side Appearance Themes then customize.

On the left click on Static Front page and it should expand to show you some options.  Select the Static Page radio button then select the page you just created.  Then click save at the top left of that area then test it by going to your site.

*edit*

You posted while I was posting so disregard if you've got it all figured out :)

Maybe you could use this feature http://stock.imagerion.com/syxtra/including-thumbnails-in-posts-or-pages/ (http://stock.imagerion.com/syxtra/including-thumbnails-in-posts-or-pages/)

The new version (1.9.9) will have the linked headers, as you may see on my site right now

If you tick "Replace Front Page template" in syxtra plugin Settings panel, you gonna have the full width front page with all sidebars available - Above content, Below content, and additional Footers
