Title: How to fix your Menu
Post by: Pilens on April 11, 2013, 16:44
I see still quite a number of SY sites having this menu problem:

When I click (not just hover) on a parent menu item some more or less unrelated page gets displayed and the drop-down list with child items gets blacked out.

I have researched this and found it is not actually a bug but a misconfiguration. Here's a solution:

A parent menu item that isn't clickable can be configured (in Appearance > Menus) by adding a Custom Link to the menu that has '#' entered for URL (instead of some http://...). Then assign the child menu items in your usual way.

Not sure if this is related, but if I click on Image Categories in my menu, I am taken to the Image Categories page. This is correct. But if I then hover over Image Categories again, the dropdown menu is all black. Will your fix work for that? I will go check the URLs.

Yep, fix works for exactly that problem. I had the same issue and it resolved it.

Sorry, I need a little more help with that. I went to Appearance>Menus. In my Main Menu, in the left column under Custom Links, I put a # in place of the http:// that was already there and for Label (it says menu item grayed out) I put Image Categories. Then I click Add to Menu. Nothing is happening. Am I doing that wrong?

I set the Parent menu up using 'Custom Links' put the # in the URL bit and give it a name like "Categories".
Then drag the 'child' menus underneath so they are indented.

I realize nothing was working because I forget to click the Save Menu in upper right. dagnabbit. But it did cause a change, now I have 3 Image Categories in my menu. I don't even begin to know how to go about fixing it.

I think I started out creating my own page for categories, and the site broke. I started all over and used Leo's page and it has been working just fine, until now.  :(

Put this "issue" here because is menu related also.

I liked to remove word "HOME" from my main page. I know, just go to "pages", edit page "Home" and delete page title, but when it is done, also menu item named "home" disappears (just word, house icon remains). See screen below.

Yellow = remove please
Blue circle = keep please

Thanks for any answer.

You can just rename your page "Home" to sth. like "Hitvectors by Chico". Not sure, though, if you can leave title empty...

Goto Pages in Wordpress.
Find the home page - remove the title "Home"on that page so it's blank - leave the content underneath with all you pics and info.
That's what did with mine so the slide show sits flush with the menu.

Go to your menu editor and enter Home as Navigation Label.

Wow!!! Thanks a lot!!! I'm two days stuck over it.

Steps to solve it.

1) Go to pages, pick page named "home" (or other at your choice)

2) Delete "title" (leave it empty)

3) save

4) go to menu

5) Open "home" (or your choice) and put name "Home" at "navigation label" field.

6) save

Final result

Works, but it could be a bit messy for administrator if you have more pages with "no title"

Yes, I see what you mean.
A title just for internal use could help. Or a checkbox that, if ticked, publishes the title on the site and if not ticked displays page without title.
Maybe Leo can do that some time when he starts getting bored  ;)

Poor Leo, but he lives in Hawaii. If he was tired, go surfing!!  ;D
