I received this email from paypal last week:

QuotePlease check your server that handles PayPal Instant Payment Notifications (IPN). IPNs sent to the following URL(s) are failing:

If you do not recognize this URL, you may be using a service provider that is using IPN on your behalf. Please contact your service provider with the above information. If this problem continues, IPNs may be disabled for your account.
Thank you for your prompt attention to this issue.

Thanks,
PayPal
PERSONAL PAYPAL account...
The address Paypal is referring to is what I entered into my SY site a long time ago, several versions of SY theme ago. It turns out that that had changed in a later version of the SY theme update.

The new address to put into your SY admin area is http://yoursite.com/symbiostock_ipn/
You do NOT need to add anything at all on the Paypal site, IPN area in your profile section. The IPN info is transmitted automatically to Paypal from your SY site when the user checks out. If you did enter a URL way back when, you should delete it from Paypal, or you might get the warning email.

Here is Leo's explanation, when I received the above email notification from Paypal:

QuoteIts just a notification. Its scary looking, but nothing.

http://cathyslifestockphotos.com/symbiostock_ipn/ is correct.

There was a point where, one by one, people started complaining IPN wasn't working. Godaddy users were especially haunted. Eventually it was found that random hosts blocked off the themes folder, and IPN notifications were blocked in the "/wp-content/themes/symbiostock/ipn/paypal_ipn.php" folder.

It was a nightmare. So it was switched to this virtually foolproof address you see above. Its only blocked on the rare occasions that someone's security plugin is messing with it.

Way back (being that your a user from the beginning) remember we had to set up IPN manually? Thats probably the left-over manual input you had done.

Hope this helps.

This is very helpful, Cathy. Consolidating info on a given topic from a variety of threads will help people trying to set this up... now and in the future.

Thanks!

Will the paypal notices eventually go away. I do not even have a symbiostock site up at the moment and I am getting these notices.

Glad someone brought this back, I hadn't noticed and I was trying to add the site to my PayPal. Good to know when I do the next one, I won't need to.

I do have a question if anyone knows.

Say I have three SyS sites. All hosted on different domain names. And they all use the same PayPal account. Will that start to cause some sort of problem?

I don't think so, I built a specialty site for a very specific niche, use the same paypal as my original site and the test purchase went through just fine.
