When a friend of mine tries to register she gets: User registration is currently not allowed
I searched the settings and the forum but didn't find anything.

In your general settings; you can allow or disallow user registrations. Make sure they are set up as "subscriber" upon registration.

Thanks Leo ... everything is fine now. A friend of mine just registered and bought an image for testing and everything worked like it should. I am very happy right now  :)
Basic is done, now I can start with fine-tuning.

No prob. The cookie prompt was covering your logo till I pushed "agreed"

Whats the hang-up people have with cookies and user notification? Is this a law somewhere?

They are still developing their site! We're being annoying by asking!

But I am curious - is there a cookie requirement based on what country you live in? I thought cookies and javascript were now pretty much something you can't live without.

I checked registration and seem to have a problem, too. I can register, but the e-mail with password never arrives. Check spam folder, too. Nothing.

When I try to login using just something as password, I get this (missing text in pink box):

Thats a strange problem nobody has mentioned.

Firstly do you have any plugins installed which might interfere?

Do you have "anyone can register" with default roles being "subscribers" ?

It's a legal requirement for British controlled Web sites, and has been for nearly a year. There are Wordpress plugins to pop up the notices.

I'm located in Germany and actually I don't know, whether it is a law here to point out that your site uses cookies. I took the idea from Tinny, who is located in Great-Britain and I think she wrote somewhere that it is European law. This is only one  point concerning legal aspects in this project I am absolutely not sure what is right, what wrong or necessary.
For example I know (and thist time for sure) that a website which is hosted in Germany must have what we call "Impressum", what is close to that what is usually found in "About" on English sites. But a german "Impressum" follows certain rules and I guess you have to name it "Impressum" not "About". At this moment I have no idea how I put this on my site. The dilemma: I must do it because it is law in Germany but I don't want to call it like that because it is totally uncommon on English sites.
By the way: If there is anyone from Germany building a Symbiostock-Site at the moment, please contact me. Would be great to have someone to discuss such local aspects.

Yes, "anyone can register" with default roles being "subscribers" is set.

Don't know about interfering plugins. I don't see anything suspicious. Do you?

when something overly funky happens in the world of wordpress (that everyone else isn't experiencing) the first thing they tell you to do is deactivate all plugins and turn them on one-by-one till the problem comes back - then you found the clashing plugin.

Let me experiment a bit and see if the problem exists on my end.

That's good advise. Found that the "Better WP Security" plugin screwed my registration.

My question now is: which of its zillion setting caused my trouble? Or is it the plugin as is, no matter what the setting are? sigh... - I see what I can find and report back.

Generally it seems this theme plays well with most plugins.

I'm not quite certain where the clash would be...while I've modified some of the activation process, it should not be derailing any essentials so as to conflict with that plugin.

It would be a tough call though. I can look into it -- in the meantime is that an essential plugin? If you find the problem let me know.

under Server Tweaks
Option Protect Files  must be unchecked. This caused derailing of registration

under Other Tweaks
(same tab)
Option Remove WordPress Login Error Messages, if checked, causes the empty pink box. That one at least is pretty obvious.

I have both options unchecked now and registration seems to work as intended.

However, some links in the password e-mail seem to wrong/misconfigured:

  • The header "Welcome to..." links doesn't work. It points to \[url\]*
  • The Login Page doesn't point to the login page but links to the license agreement page

Can that be customized somewhere in the SY theme?

One new update of Better WP Security (now version 3.5.2) and a zillion SY updates later my user registration issue has returned and this time I can't figure out which Better WP Security setting is derailing the registration process of the SY theme. Sigh!

I'll leave Better WP Security turned off for now (reluctantly).

I'd love to hear about a solution for this continued trouble, though, or suggestions for some WP security plugin that can coexist with Symbiostock better than this.

Wordpress handles your cookies completely. I could look into it, but I haven't altered any part of Wordpress's process in the way it handles your login sessions, other than some branding.

Also I'm in the process of fixing these remaining issues.

I've been experiencing that only with one of my test e-mail accounts.  Check out my various posts on the Bug Stomping thread.  I get the registration if I use my g-mail account, friends testing with Yahoo accounts get it, I tested using my e-mail at my day job and it came through. When I use my Optonline.net account which is my Cablevision (ISP provider) account their SpamScrubber stops it before it ever gets to my mailbox.  They are working on identifying what in the e-mail is blocking but I don't have an answer yet.  What I was able to determine was that it's the Symbiostock back-links in the e-mail that are trapping it in the spam scrubber.   Leo is aware of it and was going to work on changes.  I disabled the Spam Scrubber on the Optonline.net accoutn and it went through.  Tried forwarding it about 40 times, each time deleting different combinations of links.  Took out just the header, or just the images, took out all links, just one Symbio link, Just the other Symbio link.  The only time the forward went through was when I took out both Symbiostock links.

I just tried to register on my site and get no email sent. I have had others register, so i suppose they didnt get a password. I had someone register and buy on june 21 so something has changed since then.

Maybe we should move registration discussions here.

I just registered on Cathy's site - no problems for me. Email was in Gmail spam though.
I also suggested we each register on a random site to test this out.

Why don't we remove all links from the registration email - that is probably a big source of the problem. You are left with the page open on your symbio site to plug the password into, so it isn't as though you don't know where to go?

given the hassles with various user email hosts and the European requirements re cookies, and the lack of any strong argument FOR registration, maybe we can revive the question of making registration optional?  would certainly make things much smoother, and those who want it would still have it available

How would downloads work if people did not register?  At the moment they have their own download area.  If anyone uses Steve's site and purchases though his non-registration method then everyone else can download the same image for free?

Earlier test registrations are coming through now but with about a 2 hour delay.
I've checked to see if my IP or web travelwitness - address have been blacklisted and both come up clean.

If you are having problems with the registration email you will have the same problem with the download email too. I tested with both and could only send to addresses with spam filters if I took out the Symbiostock links

If you have the registration and password email that got through to one email and have another email address that did not receive it try forwarding that email to the blocked account. Once without changes and again after deleting the two Symbiostock links. In My case that's how I discovered the links that were triggering the block in the Optonline.net email systems

Maybe you are right and this is a BUG actually. In any case this needs to be either solved or changed to no user registration at all.

The new issue where it's affecting everyone, and the long delays, may be a different issue from the blocking issues I've had but my home ISP Cablevision/Optimum (not my site host) confirmed that their internal spam blocker is catching and stopping the e-mails before they get through.  They were looking into the reason it was getting trapped but I haven't heard back.

I just tried 3 tests registering on my site, sending to 3 different e-mail addresses and all three came through instantly.

1) gmail account, this one has always worked promptly without problems - this test came through instantly

2) optonline.net acct. with their spamscrubber disabled - this test came through instantly as it always has.

3) optonline.net - different account with spamscrubber enabled - this has always been blocked in the past but tonight it came through instantly.   never has before.  Tomorrow I'll call their CS desk to see what changes may have been made.

I noticed something interesting just now - I was testing the registration through purchase process. I created a new account with an email address I rarely use (but which works). All went well, I got the email and was able to register on the site. I selected an image, was passed though to Paypal, and then I bought the image using my Paypal personal email account. All worked fine. I downloaded the file from the download area etc. Success all round.

The email telling me I had bought an image arrived - but this was addressed to the email I use in Paypal - not the registration email.

All this tells me is that the registration is only needed to give them a place to store the downloads on the site for future use - the Paypal email is used for correspondence with the buyer about purchases.
