Title: Image Categories By Search Term
Post by: FiledIMAGE on August 24, 2013, 20:01
Does anyone know of a way ( I have Googled lots) of having a keyword search term in an image as an image category. I was hoping that under the 'cities' preset category I could have a further option for 'Chicago, London, Rome' etc So that the menu item would look at image keywords and return a gallery of images of that city. Not keen on setting up more image categories and having to mark off for every image and city ive been in.

Chris

Chris, every single one of my categories is a search term. They're all custom, of course, but it works quite well.

I don't see why you couldn't create a custom search term for those individual cities you mentioned.

Check out my site (link below) to see what I mean.

Technically categories and search terms are both taxonomies. So keywords are like categories, categories are like keywords.

What your suggesting is possible and best done with categories so your on the right track.

I understand you don't want to go crazy. I probably have gone a bit crazy, but the topics I've set up as categories are ones I'll be using from now on until I drop dead. So it's worthwhile for me to set them up the way I want them from the get-go.

Here's how I've done it, and you can do the same.

1. Go to SYS file Royalty Free Images (the red ladybug, I think) and click Image Categories.

2. Under Add New Category, enter the name of your new category. It could be a continent (Europe, Africa, etc) or a city (Paris, Rome, Madrid, etc). Also enter the "parent" (which could be an existing category or a new one that you've already set up via this system). You don't have to worry about "slug" since it will auto-generate. Don't worry about "Description" unless you've got a reason to add something special. Then click "Add New Category" and you'll see it appear in the list on the right.

3. Now go to Appearance > Menu. Select the Menu you want to put your new category into.

4. Search for your new category in the list on the left. When you find it, click "add to meny" and it will land at the bottom of your menu list. You can then drag it into place, indenting as appropriate. Click Save Menu, then go to your home page to see the new category magically appear where you told it to go.

5. Repeat as many times as you want. You can add all the new categories to a given Menu all at once if you like, then upload them all together.

6. You'll have to assign each image to these specific categories manually, but it's not really a very difficult task.

Good luck and let me know if you need further help.

Thanks a lot. Yep think we are pretty close to agreeing:) The system you have is good and better than I thought it would be. Mainly because when you apply the image category in 'quick edit' it appears next to be main category making it easy to apply.

I did one here:

Thanks

Speaking about categories. The structure is in place and it works great, it's easy to customize it.

I'm thinking about additional categories, for lack of better word, I'd call it artist categories, type, groups, or something similar. Maybe even two more fields - type and group.
The users wouldn't necessarily see or use it, but the contributors could use various codes to assign more meanings to their images, and then filter on it and possibly even perform other processes on the filtered sets.

Something like this is of course not possible with traditional agencies, but if it's not too difficult to add few extra fields to our database, it could be very useful for the Symbio contributors to select certain image subset and perform various analysis or processes on it.

I'll try to expand on it and post this request in the Suggestion section.

Hey, Leo, I've certainly received plenty of help over the past couple of months since I jumped head first into this endeavor. I don't often have the answers to people's questions, but I have learned a few things... like how to create custom categories. If I can "pay it forward" to help somebody else, I'm delighted to do so.

I don't like to work manually, so the new feature is already there, just wait for 1.9.9.
Any set, any category, any collection, keyword based, category based, any combination.
No time for manual work;) http://stock.imagerion.com/batch/show+travel/ (http://stock.imagerion.com/batch/show+travel/)

Sounds good but... too late for me! I've got my system all set up now and I'm sticking with it.

yet another option  is to create contact sheets:

you can reference these from within symbiostock -- examples at http://cascoly-images.com/pix/quick-search-contact-sheets/ (http://cascoly-images.com/pix/quick-search-contact-sheets/)
