Title: Make image page homepage
Post by: Poncke v2 on June 03, 2013, 12:48
Hi all,

I want to make the image page my homepage. As in xxxxxxx.com/image this will show your portfolio, however, I dont know how to make /image the landing page. When for example assign the category page or my blog as my static front page it works fine, but I cant figure out how to make /image my static front page.

Thanks.
Ronald

My unprofessional advice would be to create an htaccess file in your root folder directing all access to whatever URL you want it to be.

I don't think that this would be an elegant solution nor will it help your search engine indexing... I believe there is a point to have a "proper" home/landing index page when accessing your URL.

If I create a new page called i.e. Portfolio and I change the slug to image, it works when I click on the link in the site menu. But when I then assign that page as the front page, it will just show me  an empty page with the title Portfolio. So it doesnt bring up the images.

I dont want to use the htaccess method as I dont know if that changes the inner workings of the site.

AFAIK, using htaccess should not interfere with the functionality of the site. I just don't know if it's a smart way do so in regards to SEO.

I think the deal is you can't do that because /image is not a static page.

What you could do if you want your homepage to have a bunch of thumbnails like that is to use the home page CTA template and put the Featured Images widget in the area above or below the content, then if you add a lot of images to the featured category the will show up there.

As it is currently the suggested # of featured images is 6 because that will span one row on the default template.  If you add 18 for example this would give you 3 rows of thumbnails.

I would stay away form redirecting your homepage with .htaccess

Thanks Amanda, I was thinking about that option, and added the widget yesterday, but its not working for me. Its just not showing up. Thats another thing I wanted to ask. LOL. I have to try that again and play around with the widgets.

If a widget is not showing up on a page, it may be that the page you have chosen doesn't allow widgets....

As an example there are several different "home page" templates, but only 2 ( I think) will show widgets in the desired location.

I have the category page as my homepage, and I want to add thumbnails to that category page as its quite boring at the moment,

I want to show the latest 6 uploads, and 6 featured images.

I think you have to use the Home Page CTA template for featured/latest images on your home page. And I don't think you can use the Home Page CTA template on any other page. I think I experimented with that too.
