I realize that my site (and others symbiostock sites) margins on IE 8 were totally differents with what I get on chrome and firefox.

Is there a solution to solve this issue ?

I have also seen that the width of the page seems to differ depending on the browser / version.

Internet explorer is notoriously bad at following web standards and displaying things consistently. The older your version the worse it gets.  The current version of IE is 10 (or 9 depending on how old your version of Windows is since some don't support 10.) Chrome and Firefox are generally thought to be far superior browsers.

In web design there are usually some compromises that have to be made as it's nearly impossible to create code that display identically on all browsers and devices.  As long as the site in functioning correctly and doesn't appear broken it should be fine.  A good exercise is to check out your Google analytics to see what percentage of your audience is using what browser.

According to the chart linked below, globally in July 2013 IE accounted for less than 12% of users and only 4.8% of that 12% was on IE8.

I'm sure charts and numbers will vary but taking a look at your own stats as your traffic grows is best.

The next release of Symbiostock will allow you to launch two versions of your site - One for Internet Explorer, and one for Netscape Navigator.

Also we hope to include more animated GIF icons, banners, and stuff like that.

Internet explorer's always played by its own rules... so it keeps things fun for designers.

Thanks for the links Amanda  :)

According to my stats on Google Analytics, 8% of my visitors use IE (4% on IE8).

It seems that there's an auto margin problem with Internet Explorer  :(

I looked at the style.css file in order to specify margins values for page content but I didn't succed in identifying the lines concerned. An idea Leo ?  ;)

right, the w3schools sitge itself has this disclaimer:
W3Schools is a website for people with an interest for web technologies. These people are more interested in using alternative browsers than the average user. The average user tends to use the browser that comes preinstalled with their computer, and do not seek out other browser alternatives.

my stats are pretty evenly spread out, with safari having a bit less - the top 4 account for over 95% of users, but the split is slightly different for my symsite and my main site:

cascoly.com:   firefox 40, chrome 32, IE 27,safari 22

cascoly-images.com (sym):  IE 97, chrome 90, firefox 87, safari 72

I often wonder how anybody can bear to look at a photo site using IE; I have IE10, and everything looks as if it has the saturation set at +300, but then I only use it for checking websites. I normally use Firefox, and on that any image tagged as sRGB or AdobeRGB looks exactly the way it does in Photoshop.

The base theme actually uses the Twitter Boostrap CSS so I know there is a reset section in there that would usually help to normalize the margins in all browsers as much as can be expected.  If you added your own margins I'm wondering if it may have over-ridden some of that.

If you are very concerned about the IE8 issue, what you could do is include a browser specific style sheet that with specific adjustments for that browser.  I don't have a ready sample of that laying around but if you are feeling adventurous that's the path I'd check out.  Just curious does the layout actually break in IE8 or the margins just noticeably different?

The little stuff used to drive me bananas until someone pointed out to me that if a user is on IE they probably haven't seen the site on another browser so they won't even know the margins are different for example.

I recently upgraded IE from version 8 to 10, but I had the same issue previously.  If I remember correctly, the left and right margins are larger in IE8, which only displays four images in a row for the widgets (as opposed to six images in a row for all of the other browsers).

I did not even realise Navigator still existed - that was the first browser I ever used, a long time ago

Yes that's exactly my problem  :(
