In the course of trying to change my username and password to wp, I mucked up my site. Everything is restored, but all images are still missing. I asked my hosting company to restore my site from a backup they had from 4-11-13. At that point in time I had uploaded about 50 images. They did the restore and yet there are no images in the root>symbiostock_rf folder (large images) or in the wp-content>uploads>symbiostock_rf_content folder (the two MOST important folders). Any idea why that would be? They swear up and down that they restored my whole root (cathyslifestockphotos.com) folder.

I know for a fact they were there on the 11th, because the hi rez images were in the folder earlier today when I spoke to the first tech support guy. I saw them with my own eyes.

I am so frustrated. I messed it up to begin with, but the whole point of a backup is to back EVERYTHING up. I am just going to have to start re-uploading.  :'(

edit: I can't even make any progress. I can upload ok, but when I process an image, it does not go to the next window. It behaved this way when I first started uploading but then it got straightened out somehow. I have tried deleting both parent and child theme and had no effect. Any ideas?

I completely understand your frustration.

That sounds weird. Are you sure they aren't talking about just a backup of your wp database? What hosting company are you with?

Did you check if your ini.php settings are what you had before this happened? I mean there must be something wrong with that backup if files are missing. So I guess anything is possible  :(
You might be better off installing your site new from a clean wp installation.

Thanks for the sympathy. I will also check the ini.php settings too, though my host created that file for me so I don't think that would have changed, but at this point I will entertain any ideas. I am backing up my wp-content and wp-config file right now. Then will reinstall wordpress and see if that straightens it out.

But don't the image files go into the database? So a backup of the database should have included the image files, no? Or do the image files stay out of the database. If they don't go to the database, I'm guessing that's what happened...they backed up the database but the other files were lost somehow. I know I did not delete them so I have no clue where they went.

Reinstalling wp from within admin panel got me one step closer...now I can see the image and process it, but when it goes to the All Images window, there is no preview. All the other data is there.

No, the images don't go into the database. Just references where to find them.

Hmm, seems your wp reinstall is still acting up. Can you find any thumbs of the processed images in wp media library?

nope, no thumbs, no high res images in the symbiostock_rf folder either. Might have to do a total reinstall of wp.

That indicates processing your images totally failed. I really wonder if limitations in your ini.php are causing this...

I will look again but i did check once and all looked ok. But i am tired and thought i would have 50 more images uploaded today instead of this nightmare. I am doing a total reinstall of everything right now...lets see if i can really hose it up.  :-\

Hope the reinstall works out for you. Some days would turn out being more productive by staying in bed all day napping  ;D It happens, I know...

What exactly did you do to crash your site?

For sure.

I wanted to change the username from admin to something more robust, in light of the wordpress hacks. I read a couple of things online and it turned out to be the wrong way to do it. I believe it caused a big disconnect from the images. It makes sense, i just didnt know how to recover from it.

The right way to change name and pw is in the database. Hindsight...20/20.

It has been a cascade of problems since 2:30 this afternoon and I have no website up now. Time for some wine!

Sounds like a good plan, and if wine doesn't work, move on to ice cream!

This is really frightening...I hope you will find a way to recover the pictures edited.
I have now almost 600 online edited one by one and would be desperate if this happens at this stage.

It won't happen unless you try to change your username and password the wrong way! If you want to make those stronger, go to your phpadmin panel at your hosting company and make the changes. If you need help, ask them so you don't do the wrong thing, like I did.

Just catching up.

Wordpress allows you to recover your password via the typical email process. Did you find that.

Does bluehost do automatic backups? There are two kinds - file backups and database backups. Both should be done occasionally. Did you try to uninstall wordpress itself? That would delete your preview images. But not the main folder...which is why it seems weird.

Let me know what the progress is. I'll be back full-force on monday.

Switched to blue host, waiting for DNS servers to propagate, but at least I have a page again.
