I've been following these threads closely with the intention of creating my own symbio site once other priorities are out of the way (i started a screen printing venture for one. I'm in nyc so if anyone needs screen printing services =) pm me...).
Lets say this really takes off and the agencies really take notice on its success. Is there a possibility of a company like GETTY swooping in and killing this thing by outright buying it off??? I'm not familiar with the "open source" project of this sort.
-
No we all own our own sites.
-
there's no one to buy it from! open source means just that - the entire source code is publicly available. someone could make & market a derivative, but they'd need to build their own network
-
I'm willing to sell. ;)

Devil's advocate here....
What if G---y said offered ridiculous $$$ for www.symbiostock.com (http://www.symbiostock.com), www.symbiostock.info (http://www.symbiostock.info) and www.symbiostock.net (http://www.symbiostock.net) websites?
What if they offered Leo ridiculous $$$ for the site and code and sent out an update that broke the network?
Just saying... ???

Highly unlikely.
They still wouldn't own the images/content.

The code is public already. There's no turning back the open source character.

When placement of SY images starts eating into their placement, you can believe something would be done. But aforementioned party might have already secured their position, particularly with google. Money talks.
I have thought the same as you , Don.

It is much more likely that Leo buys Getty only to set up on their site a redirect to the Symbiostock site and to use their office as a venue for snooker and ping-pong tournaments for symbiostock members.

The code is some version of open source IIRC. A bigger issue I have been wondering (as a spectator) - what happens if Leo one day decides to stop developing and or maintaining and fixing the code ?
Most successful open source projects I can think of have a much bigger economic base and therefore either a team of developers or, ultimately, money for code. It's hard with Symbiostock to see what the model is from the development side. That could be me not understanding it properly.
-
We don't have to worry about Getty coming after Symbiostock. "Professionals work with professionals", right? We're all just a bunch of amateurs, building sites on Leo's amateur WordPress theme. They're not interested in us.
;)

This is what I was thinking. Since Wordpress is always updating, I assume someone actually has to man the ship (code) occasionally.
-
I could be wrong, but I believe I recall seeing Leo say at some point that the idea with Symbiostock is that other people get more involved in the coding and development. As this all grows, hopefully more and more people with coding knowledge and WordPress development backgrounds will be able to help and/or take over development if Leo should ever not be able (or want) to continue with the project.

Just because WordPress upgrades doesn't mean that you would need to upgrade. The website will continue to work without upgrading.

I'd be somewhat careful about that. I've had a couple of wordpress sites in the past that I didn't keep up to date on the wordpress updates. After missing a few wordpress updates both of my sites were hacked exploiting weaknesses that the more recent versions of wordpress would have already eliminated.
-
Leo just said recently that Sym would eventually work without Wordpress.
-
Yep - Wordpress is notorious for being hacked if not kept up to date. Changes to Wordpress itself and to PHP and MySQL inevitably mean that over time the Symbiostock code will have to be kept up to date too.
It's a hugely impressive start and an interesting experiment but surely it will need many more coders and some sort of development methodology and structure before it could ever go mainstream.

Leo just said recently that Sym would eventually work without Wordpress.
I would be interested in hearing the meaning of that. So it will be a program that is independently written? Not open source? If it works without Wordpress, wouldnt it have to be redesigned from scratch?

I read that the other day and took it to be run as a Content Management System (CMS).

actually you don't have to update it.. I had a Wordpress store on the domain I installed SY since 2009 and I hadn't updated it for 3 years until I decided to switch to SY..
why update if it's already working and bringing in $$$ :)
If symbiostock.com / .net / .info were to be bought by getty and they decided to screw things up, you just never update again :) the store will continue working as is..
