Need help with FTP upload to NextGen Gallery

<< < (2/4) > >>

Kerioak~Christine:
The path for version 2.5.6 is a little different if you are using that, but following Cathy's directions will show you where it is

I am a bit confused, are you trying to get your pictures onto the site for licencing or to use in the next gen gallery? I do not use the latter so cannot advise on that

marthamarks:
Thanks to you both, Cathy and Tinny, for enlightening me about this. I think I actually do "see the way forward" now. (And yes, I'm using 2.5.6.)

Tinny, your question is a good one. I am trying to upload images for licensing and I thought NextGen Gallery was the way to do that. If it's not, them I'm even more scrambled up on this than I thought.

Somewhere in the set-up instructions (or maybe elsewhere on the Forum? ... all the advice is starting to muddle in my mind), Leo says to get NextGen Gallery. That was the first time I'd heard of it, so being a diligent student, I got it. Assumed that was the way to incorporate images into the site. Maybe not??? Is it possible to do that strictly through the SYS software?

I haven't gotten far enough along to have an actual sales page on my site, and I've been assuming the SYS theme would give me that capability. But I thought I needed to get the images in some other way, and NGG was one way to do that.

This is especially frustrating since I currently run 3 other WP websites (based on 2 different themes) and had no problems setting them up. I assumed this would go up as smoothly as those others did. It must be the complication of adding large numbers of large images for commercial use that's making this more challenging.

It helps to know others have gone through this before me and worked it out nicely. Thanks, everybody, for your logistical help and moral support!

You don't have to use NextGen Gallery, no. I am not using it. I use the uploader on the left side of the page (I am not uploading massive quantities at once so I don't currently use FTP...maybe in the future tho) and the ImageMagick software does the processing. The images go into the SY theme image page automatically. There are some people using NextGen, but I don't know what the advantages are.

If you use ftp, you drop them into the folder discussed above, then go the wp admin area and process them just as you would if you had used the admin uploader. ftp just allows you to get large quantities there faster.

Yes, uploading large numbers of large images make the SY theme a little bit different than other WP sites. We have all been "learning" to set up our sites, and the project has grown so fast, that information is scattered about and for a new person setting up a site, it's frustrating. Amanda and a couple of others are trying to get everything organized into one place to make things a little more simple.

Cathy, your personal approach is actually quite helpful. Maybe if I quit trying to figure out NextGen Gallery and stick with trying to figure out SYS, at least for now, things will go more smoothly. That old KISS principle has value, ya'know!

And yes... Amanda has given me some good help in private emails, plus her documentation is good. So let me take this opportunity to thank her publicly here.

I'm not complaining about anything related to SYS and the MSG Forums. I've learned a whole lot from cruising around these threads, and I'm excited about the potential for the SYS network. It's going to be a powerful player in this field in future years. I'm confident of that.

In the FWIW category: I'm an active member of another "indie cooperative" group, the Historical Fiction Authors Cooperative, or HFAC. (If you're curious, visit http://hfebooks.com/ -- where I'm the webmaster.) HFAC started several years ago as the publishing industry was in full-throttle change-over from the old business model toward self-publishing. The parallels between indie writers and indie photographers/artists are remarkable, and they're happening for exactly the same reasons. I could expound more on that, but this is not the proper place for it.

I didn't take it that way. I had set up a few other Wordpress sites before tackling this one, so some of it was familiar, but I went through many frustrating days for about 3 weeks before I finally got my site looking like it is. And it could still be improved. And I agree. The potential is mind-staggering. I hope it works out well.

That might be the way to go. Upload a few, look around, get your site the way you want it. By then you will have mucked around enough to where the ftp thing might be a little easier. I usually upload 10 at a time, but I think others do way more than that with no issues. It seems to be a little different for everyone.

I have heard of the similarities between writers and photographers before. I can imagine they are just as frustrated. Maybe they could alter the SY theme to work for writers, and the two could be networked together?
