Title: Language problems
Post by: sarah2 on September 05, 2011, 03:16
I signed up with Veer on the English speaking version of the site because I speak English. The system (?) has now decided that because I have an Italian email address, I want the site in Italian. Any idea how I can change back to the English version - maybe I'm missing something, but I can't find this info. Support have yet to reply...
Cheers for any help.

Hi Sarah2 -   The localization isn't based on your email address, but rather the physical address you have registered with us.  Apart from re-registering under a different address (which would cause issues with any tax forms you submit), there is no way to change the localization.

Why would any site force a language on users based on registration address?

It's not hard at all to allow the option to change the language regardless of the address. Tons of sites allow that.

Agree. I travel a lot in Europe and forced localisation is a curse.
All languages are beautiful, but when one happens to travel to - say - Finland or Hungary (which have fantastic languages but totally different from Romance/Germanic languages) sometimes it's not so easy to find the button to get back to the English page. I guess it would be even worse if I travelled to Asia.

When I started using computers many years ago with DOS all programs where in English and it was perfectly fine - who needs localisation? If stock agencies think it's useful for buyers to increase sales, fine - but for us submitters it's useless: we need to keyword in English anyway.

Now even Google is always reverting to the local page, Safari is installing in local language... I'm really annoyed. If they think they are doing us a favour... well, they are not.

Wow!!! That is just SO mad!!! And unhelpful!! Italian may be beautiful in certain circumstances, but finding my way round a website when my Italian is only - well - mediocre just isn't my idea of fun!
Thanks to all for comments - and for Veer for at least replying. But Veer - PLEASE can you reconsider this? After all, I could sign up via the English speaking site - if I'd got it only in Italian I probably would have abandoned then and there!
Queppalle!!
Sigh......!

Ah DOS.  I loved DOS.

I think the language of a site should always be available as a clear choice for the user.  Not only for travelers, but so many countries are multi-ethnic now, and not all inhabitants have mastered the native language at any given point in time.

I agree that you should be able to select which language you view their site in, but in the meantime, would opening in Google Chrome with the translator help any?

Thanks for suggestions and offers of help! I hope to go and have a proper look around at the weekend when I have more time.  I will sit myself down with a nice glass of Italian wine and see how things go....!

Well - I think I've got some pics in the system now! Fairly longwinded and so much scrolling up and down the page I couldn't believe it! But language not a problem in the event as key pages are in English!
Disambiguation was fun though - I input in English of course and they suggested words in Italian. And some very odd ones too!
A macro shot of two bees eating a pear, and they suggested the keyword 'sexy'. Hmmm....!! I decided NOT to add it!
