Title: So this is what Storyblocks are going to do next
Post by: Rasika on September 02, 2019, 04:57
Well, yesterday I noticed a message from them informing me, that they choose some of my content which is going to automatically enter the subscription section once they remove the marketplace, and if I don't want that to happen, I should contact them etc.
Tried to contact them, to reject this "kind" offer, and insist on all my content being deleted. I will send them one mail a day until I get a confirmation on this, don't agree to get even one clip from my portfolio to appear in their pool for even one day, and find it outrageous what they are doing now.

Was that in a different message, as I'm not seeing it in the one you've posted?

That's interesting.

Sounds like they are desperately  trying to get people to sign up  for their "great" "$0.05" (or less)/video download program.

They do have a huge enough library now that I think they can coast quite comfortably for the next 5 years, but I don't think many people will be too excited to work for pennies and submit new worik. Unfortunately - there is a large supply of "newcomers" - but - not sure if they will take the time to keyword, title, edit, etc videos for the wonderful prospect of 5 cents a video.

Plus - since they' basically screwed people over in the past (100% "we'll never change! not like they other guys!" commissions -> 50% "oops sorry we have to" -> "buh bye now, give it to us for pennies!" structure).

Now 'supposedly' how they calculate the contributor pool is by "3x the HEIGHT of commissions when contributors earned 100%" to make it sound like a "huge" amount. (They don't actually specify that number - which leads me to believe it's really just something they are picking out of their butt). Educated guess they are probably only allocated about $50k (out of their $30 million revenue) to be split amongst contributors.

But then it would be very naive to believe they were actually being honest, since they've proven themselves already to be dishonest several times over. They don't actually "commit" to any number (so no accountability whatsoever). And then - for the arbitrary number they've chosen - they'll probably squeeze it as low as possible until people actually start dropping out.

They've just gotten too greedy.

They'll struggle with mine.... I deleted it all a month or so before they pulled the plug on the market place.

One by one.
And the fun part will start when the content gets into the subscription program, since at this point you need to notice then six month in advance, to get your content removed, as far as I understood.

Yeah, they said they 'may' invite you to join the member library in the future, so they're keeping some of your footage in your account (rather than deleting them when the marketplace closes) so that if they do invite you (and you decide to join) you don't have to upload them again. Nowhere did they say that your content is going to automatically enter the subscription service when the marketplace is deleted. At present, both of those need to happen for your content to join the member library... and neither of them has happened. Might be worth reading it again yourself!

"If you do not wish to join the Partner Program, please email..."
This sentence then sounds strange, don't you think so? :)

No, it means they can delete all of your clips right away and give your spot in the queue to someone else.

Unless someone just has a super "bad" portfolio (unlikely in the first place, otherwise they wouldn't have accepted the submissions)... I suspect it is just a pyschological trick to try and make contributors "feel" they may be missing out on something, i.e., sense of urgency - "uh oh, better act now, or I could "miss out"!".

I believe the queue is totally artificial, and has nothing to do with them being "backed up".

They would probably be ecstactic if 100% of contirbutors agreed to their watered down program where they can pay them peanuts.

But since not everyone is excited as they thought about their "great news" about screwing over contributors again, they are trying this to get people to sign up.

Alas, I was rejected from their new "fantastic" program. But as Groucho Marx once said, "I don't want to join any club that would accept me as a member." So in the end we both win.

They must have received a lot of termination requests. I sent my request as soon as I got the membership email. My port was deleted the next day.  ;D

Send them an email and tell then you want your content deleted and account closed. I did so a month ago, and it was deleted after a couple of emails back and forth.

I would actually be surprised if they are still around in another year or two.

What makes you think that? They started in 2006 and have been growing steadily ever since... and the subscription side of the business has always being their core offering. If they were going strong before the marketplace came along, I can't see any reason they'd have trouble still being around a year or two after the marketplace disappears... especially with the influx of new content.

Because every sane artist will understand that losing sales elsewhere to only get few more bucks on storyblocks doesn't make sense..

That relies on the world being populated by sane artists! And even if they ditched the ability for artists to submit content to the membership library... and every artist removed their clips... they've still got millions of other clips to offer subscribers. I can't see them going anywhere any time soon!
