Title: Videoblocks collections - upsetting insight.
Post by: StockStudio on July 31, 2018, 02:32
I was just browsing through the new "collections" part of the StoryBlocks site.
Came accross the "Medical Stock footage" collection.
Since I have many medical clips I wanted to see whether one (or more) of them were included in the collection.
To my great surprise I saw that out of around 80 clips un the collection - almost 30 are from the same contributors, same shoots, and sometimes slight variations of the same shots!!

Judge of your self:  https://www.videoblocks.com/collections/medical-stock-footage?page=2 (https://www.videoblocks.com/collections/medical-stock-footage?page=2)

Now I know there are thousends (if not tens of thousends) of great medical stock clips out there in Storyblocks.
How on earth did they curate such a misrable collection???
I sent them a mail - no response yet.

could they be curating only best sellers? (and by that promoting them even more...)
Could they be favoring some contributors over others?

What . ?

Well, obviously any site would favor best sellers because that means buyers need those clips.

By the very nature of a curated collection, of course some contributors are favored over others. But it's pretty great when YOU are among the favored.

You can also see that they have almost only membership clips in there, but maybe this will change as the new split comes in effect.

But all in all, I would have to agree with you that the selection wasn't the best, but the staff can't possibly have a good grasp of what's in the entire, at this point quite large, collection of clips.

Yes, chances are they are the best sellers.

Videoblocks has the sales data, so knows what sells. And chances are - they purchased those clips and that is what the contributor provided.

Probably also the reason why you see very little sales from your own collection, because most people are happy with what they find in the collection, so don't want to pay for anything else.

That entire collection is footage from the Member Library, so available for free download to members. I would guess that explains the lack of variety.
