Hi all
I'm Bjorn, the CTO of YayMicro, and as we have closed our forum I wanted to introduce myself to you all here. I'll start paying attention to what is written here, and reply as fast as I can. So if you have any technical issues, ideas or other stuff you want to discuss, this will be the place to do it. Hope you all have a wonderfull weekend :)

Uploading is easy, submitting is a pleasure, acceptance and rejections are mostly relevant and when there is a small technical problem sending an email is enough to get the problem solved in 1 or 2 days!
Two wishes are left here: Hoping that Yaymicro will get more sales in the future and that other stockagencies will learn from the way you run your site.

Oh don't be too mundane! Sales are just a detail. As long as it looks good! :P
Try to look at it as a buyer: search for "business success cheering". YAY: 3 images: 2 Arcurs (you can find on a gazillion sites) and 1 badly lit bleached out shot that was probably rejected elsewhere. DT: 441 images, great variety to choose from. Why would any buyer with a minimum of common sense buy from YAY instead of from DT? Sad, but that's business.

gave 3489 search result. Would be interested in knowing how you came about getting 4 images in your result? Could you maybe post the link from the browser, and I will have a look at why you don't get more results.

Yes, I got the same results as Bjorn.
I'd be frustrated that there's no-one cheering until page 3 though. I feel a bit sorry for Maridav who 'met the brief' as it were, and got pushed behind less appropriate images in this case.

I totally agree Rubyroo. The thing about the search is that it is "auto-adjusting" which means that once we get more traffic to our site, views and downloads will also count. I have already started noticing this tendency, and I think you will see our searches becoming better with time. I don't think it's that bad though, and we will continue to work on it, so our customers have the best experience possible.

Thanks Bjorn, I see what you're saying, and I hope it works out. I am a bit puzzled though that there is at least one image on page 3 that has the keyword 'cheering', yet there are images in front of it which don't have that keyword at all.

Technically, I got no complaints. Yaymicro is one of the easiest sites to upload and submit images, plus it's fast as hell...at least in this part of the world.

Well I retried it, and you are right now. I can't imagine what happened the first time since I left the FF tab open. Well to be complete, I had to kill FF in between by the task manager since it was leaking memory all over.
So can it be it was a session cookie renewed? Or did the search go from AND to OR? It seems to me like that since on the first page, it's all Yuri: business portraits but none is cheering. I made a screenshot for you:
(note by the way the small blue bullets from picscout: when I click on it, I'm brought to the sales page of the same image on Dreamstime).
Update: I checked the advanced options and there is nothing to change from any to all words. Buyers expect that, plus the default on AND.
Now, and this is revealing: when I just search on "cheering", I only get 131 images. So the search must have turned mysteriously from AND to OR, and that's why I got only 3 images the first time.

@FD... this is way off subject but that leak is interesting. Is it common? I seem to be having a Memory Leak problem but haven't been able to isolate it.

Yes it's common. FF is known for that and I came accross joke sites on the net about it. It can go till 1Gbyte in RAM, depending on the number of tabs you have open and the scripts on there. On a PC with just 2GByte ram (like mine), it can slow things terribly down. Beware: it's not enough to close FF in the normal way since it will stay resident. You'll have to invoke the task manager (CTRL-ALT-DEL) and kill the FF process tree manually.

Generally, when you minimize a window the memory usage goes way down because that application isn’t active. Unfortunately, Firefox by default doesn’t adhere to this behavior.
Look who's eating most memory and it's even on just an hour or two.

Ok, now I understand what you’re talking about! And yes, I know about this kind of problems. With older Windows versions you needed to install a memory manager to get your memory back. Or doing a restart.
Since I use Picniche I left my browser sometimes open all day and indeed I had some problems lately with a slowing down computer. Thought it was a harddisk that’s nearly full!

After doing a search on the internet I found also that there is a problem with a memory leak in Windows7 too. Microsoft said they planned to solve this this month August with SP1.
It seems that there is a connection with the FF problem when using Win7 and FF together on one computer. It was found by accident by a group of people responsible for the computers in a company when installing new PCs. (Don't know how to call them in English. I.T.'s?) They asked Microsoft, for they couldn’t found a solution on the M’s website. Microsoft told them about the planned fix in SP1. It is not in English, so a link is useless I think.)
When this can happen, there is a serious problem with FF:
“This will eventually slow down the system and in the worse case lead to a password leaking i.e, your password will be displayed publicly due to memory leakage in Internet browsers.” (quote from the blog you linked.)
By the way: there’s no date on the blog and the only reaction is from March 2009. So at first I was thinking it is old news, but it seemed not to be solved yet.
Perhaps a good idea to try Opera instead, but then I can’t use Picniche anymore…
At least it will always help not to install too much add-ons, being careful with toolbars and don’t do too much ‘personalizing’ in FF.

Actually I just restarted till I found out by the task manager I can just kill the hungry beast. ;) (kill process tree and not just process).

Okay, this is now officially way of topic, but who cares :) Generally when firefox behaves like that I would try turning some of your addons off and see if that helps. Sometimes they can cause problems. Also, Chrome has a better architecture, as it starts every tab in it's own process, meaning you don't have to kill the whole application when something screws up.
Back to our search. The reason the business man turns up on page one is because the title of the image is: "Cheerful senior business man". I've looked into it, and it turns out we ignore endings of words, so cheerful is the same as cheering as far as the search engine concerns. This behaviour is sometimes a good idea, in this case not. We'll have to see if we should change it, or if this is generally a good idea. Search is complex, and tuning on search could end up making everything else worse.

Yes, I know it was a bit off-topic, but I asked explanation only for possible security reasons. Security is important for stockagencies too, especially this password thing.
Not sure what to think about this item, by the way. I mean: How high the risks are that passwords can become visible in FF.

Had a sale on Yay today paying 5 euros commission. But is this a sale or the 3rd party (2nd quarter) sales being added? We normally get an email when the results are in but I haven't had one. Nice commission if it is a sale but dissapointing if it's the 3rd party sales! Anyone else get this today? Regards, David.

Hi David!
Third party isn't out yet, but it will be in app. 2-3 weeks. Jan will notify all of you when it's out. If you got a €5 in commission it would be from a single image-sale in high-res size. Our commission is 50% on single images, - giving you €0.5 ($0.6) for small, €2.5 ($3.2) for medium and €5 ($6.3) for high-res images, and €1 ($1.3) on each downloads on subs/deals.

I wish I could understand why my best selling images at other sites have sold zero on Yay for over a year. ???. I have uploaded zero new work even with the easy uploading there. Why bother? Am I missing something?

You've got a lot of good images, so I'm sure you'll to will see that sales are picking up at YAY! Given you have 270 images among 1,017,916 it's difficult to say when. You could try to get into our third party deal, if you're not there already.
It's also important to remember that we're a small agency, still in our startup phase. Some newbies might grow faster then us, other slower - but the important thing is that we're growing at a fast and steady pace! Still, I understand photographers who choose to not upload until they get satisfying results. (Although the satisfying results will come much faster if you continue to upload, as you'll get a smaller and smaller share of photos at the site if you don't.)
I hope you'll continue at our site, and I'm positive you'll see your sales pick up the following months!

I just had 14 sales in one day, so I'm very optimistic :)
I have noticed though, that most of my sales are Norwegian nature pics!

Yay is a nice site, especially uploading. The Yay folks are positive. Pricing sensible and commissions are ok. Sales may be dismal so far, but I prefer supporting sites that takes the industry in the right direction rather than e.g. Thinkstock or Colourbox.
I wish them the very best of luck, and hope they succeed in their future endeavours.
