"Thank you for supporting YAY by licensing your images through our YAY Micro website.
We’re writing to ask you to make your images available at our new website yayimages.com. Starting January 1, 2016 we will stop selling images at YAY MIcro and direct all our customers to the new site, and we’d love to be able to license your images.
Here’s how to opt-in:
login at yaymicro.com
go to My Account
select API Details
"Since we launched the new subscription site two years ago, it has become very popular and today brings in by far the vast majority of YAY’s revenue. yayimages.com has an improved search experience, convenient editing features for customers, and a fresh, modern interface.
We will send all image customers to the new site to help us focus our business. Yaymicro will continue to be the place for contributors like you to login and submit your images.
Thanks again for sharing your images with the world via YAY!"
About time really. I think this yayimages is their terrible streaming thing? I can't remember the compensation but I do remember that it was awful.
-
Anyone got the links to the breakdown of their subs offering. Can't find it now.
-
So, can anyone tell me what we the contributors actually get paid for these unlimited streaming downloads. Do we actually get paid for them or do we get our 50% cut of nothing.
-
Okay, I think it supposed to be 50% of whatever they get depending on how many images the subscriber uses. All far too vague for my liking, there needs to be a minimum in place per download. Anyone been opted in for a while that can tell us how much they average for these sales?
Reading over the previous thread the "streaming" thing is definitely a misnomer, these are just standard sub sales under another name and we need to be compensated appropriately.
Can someone from YAY chime in? I will need to delete my many thousands of images from the site if the offering is as it appears, and would rather save myself the hassle if they are about to offer something more reasonable.
-
Sooo if I have €25 and they min pay is €30 and now they're closing - how do I get this money from them?
-
Good question I'm in same boat 😊

I dont have very many images there, but never opted into the streaming thing - just a slap in the face for contributers
If they are sutomatically going to move content into this streaming service, I am pulling out altogether
Even the stupid little micros are crapping on contributers...
-
I will be doing the same if we don't get a reasonable set amount per subscription download.
Unfortunately I am stuck on $24 and not likely to make payout next year at my normal rate of sales here.
-
Since we launched the new subscription site two years ago, it has become very popular and today brings in by far the vast majority of YAY’s revenue.
Well, we wouldn't want to mess up YAY's revenue. ;)
-
There was a lot of discussion here when Yay first introduced this Yay Images subs/streaming site a couple of years ago -link here: http://www.microstockgroup.com/yaymicro/yay-newsletter-information-about-new-product/ (http://www.microstockgroup.com/yaymicro/yay-newsletter-information-about-new-product/)
I opted in to see what happened but, as I stated on the recent Yay Micro -is it alive? thread, I have had virtually no sales (subs or otherwise) in recent years.
I was probaly going to stop uploading anyway but had hoped the odd sale from my remaining images (circa 2400) would add up to a payout now and again.
What concerns me is that none of my editorial images (the majority of my port) appear on the Yay Images site. Though it has an Editorial and Celebrity category none of my editorials are searchable and I can only find around 700 (non editorial) images if I search on my username.
So, does this mean that all my time uploading editorials to Yay has been wasted? Hopefully, Yay will respond here with some more information.
-
There's not much drama in this. We're closing yaymicro, as we've migrated most customers to yayimages.com. We're still keeping yaymicro as our photographer portal, and even though it is still competitive in regards to how easy it is to upload - it is in dire need of an upgrade. To keep the website running for the few remaining customers is just not worth it.
Yayimages.com on the other hand has an excellent search, awesome UI and features our main competitors still don't have. We're putting all our eggs in that basket now. We will focus on innovating and build a stock photo platform that is easy, affordable and fair.
Contributors get 50 % of earnings. I see some of you are concerned about the unlimited streaming option and earnings. So far the average earning per streaming image is $0.27. Which means that customers using streaming on average have a low image usage. These are typically bloggers or small businesses that need a few images per month.
We're confident that the growth we're seeing on yayimages.com will continue, and that earnings should pick up over the next few months. Still, we're a small agency, so bare with us.
-
Thanks for the response Jan. Could you clarify my point raised in my previous post. Will editorial images uploaded to Yay Micro be available on the Yay Images site? I cannot find mine! TIA, David.
-
The streaming model (unlimited downloads) is certainly the opposite of what photographers need and I will not support it. And $0.27 average earnings is way to low. As you say, it seems currently only bloggers with low image demands.
Once the library grows and gets interesting for big customers and they start migrating from existing agencies this would kill the business completely.
When you abandon that model I may re-consider supporting Yay Images.
What happens to my account if I simply leave it as is, i.e. with Yay Images not selected as API partner?
-
@Yay: As you never paid my due before that I close my account, and even never answer to my numerous emails about the money you owe me , I wish you all the bad (and the worst) possible with your new site!
-
I have requested many times that Yay pay me my balance and close my account. They simply ignore my messages. Yay are, in my view, untrustworthy and their streaming model unsustainable for contributors.
-
What are the odds that they might buck the trend and actually reply to my requests then.
-
I have never uploaded to Yay Micro, but I went to have a look at Yay Images to see what they were offering.
They don't offer unlimited downloads, but unlimited streaming for $9.99 a month. The streamed image appears to be hosted on their servers and you can link to it from your blog or other online use:
https://www.yayimages.com/support/13-support/26-what-is-streaming (https://www.yayimages.com/support/13-support/26-what-is-streaming)
Are there any limits on the size you can stream? If not, it doesn't take a genius to link to a huge size, do a screen grab and save the image...
The bigger worry, IMO, is the super-low pricing for downloads and the rather ambiguous license terms (such as whether you can use a regular license, not extended, to produce up to 100 products for sale):
https://www.yayimages.com/pricing?backUrl=%2Fterms (https://www.yayimages.com/pricing?backUrl=%2Fterms)
Note that you can get 1,000 downloads (with a standard RF license) plus unlimited streaming for $99 a month. I don't see any need to commit to a year to get that price. Contrast that with SS where a one month subscription for up to 750 images is $249. You could argue that the relatively tiny selection at Yay Micro would suggest a lower price.
However, these prices are even worse than they look because you can rollover unused downloads.
Yay's extended license pricing is even worse - you get 100 extended licenses (plus the 1,000 standard) for $499 a month! I'm not sure that anyone would ever buy this - how many buyers need 100 ELs?
https://www.yayimages.com/pro-plan (https://www.yayimages.com/pro-plan)
Note the contradiction between the chart and the text. The chart says 1,000 RF licenses and 100 extended. The text says 900 RF licenses and 100 extended. There is also the rather odd wording "If you are making a product in less than 100 copies, you do NOT need an extended license." This suggests that you can an extended license for a 100-run limit in the standard RF price.
They also say in the support section that you can download images instead of streaming them if the service you use doesn't permit hotlinking
https://www.yayimages.com/support/13-support/29-can-i-download-the-images (https://www.yayimages.com/support/13-support/29-can-i-download-the-images)
So do they make any effort to police this at all?
The other thing I noticed is that you don't see the pixel dimensions of any image when searching - if I'm looking for print uses vs. a blog, that's important information. Perhaps they are assuming that blogging and online uses are primary for them?
With the entry level $9.90 a month, a buyer gets one download and unlimited streaming. If the contributor gets 50 percent and a buyer downloads one image and streams 10, what are the royalties paid for the one download and each stream? I can't find those specifics on the site.
The contract may not require them to do it, but I'd think common decency requires that if they're shuttering Yay Micro, they should pay out any balances to those who wish to leave as a result. And as their payout threshold is in euros but the prices I'm seeing are in US dollars, what exchange rate do they use to convert?
Based on what I can see of Yay Images, I wouldn't contribute images. Trying to get market traction by undercutting other agencies on price seems like a non-starter - a variation of the Dollar Photo Club.
-
Another one bites the dust, then.
It doesn't make any difference if I make 2, 3 or 5 peanuts less per year.
I liked Yay in the distant past for their approach, but continuing now would be a complete waste of time and I don't feel like helping to undercut other agencies.
See you in the next life, guys.
-
I will happily close my account there WHEN and IF I get the assurances that I have requested from YAY about the deletion of all my images from their site and their partners.
When Photokore closed down recently they did the decent thing and paid the commissions owed even if it was less than the minimum threshold AND respected the wishes of those who did not want to have their images transferred to Getty.
I sincerely hope that YAY will do the same.
I do not see how Yay can continue to sell our images if we do not give them permission to transfer them to the new site.
I would have thought that it would be a legal requirement to stop using other peoples copyrighted material when you close down the site under whose terms the contributor contract was made.

Put in red by me.
I think this would attract buyers that will be selling a lot of stuff to be printed on mugs calendars posters shirts and such... tons of printers that need a lot of images to sell that they cant produce themselves...
-
So, can anyone tell me what we the contributors actually get paid for these unlimited streaming downloads. Do we actually get paid for them or do we get our 50% cut of nothing.
Suppose I am a "blogger" with a 9.90/month subscription. I can actually write 1 article a day.
9.90 / 31 / 2 = 15 cent.
I know I can't use the F word but that's what comes to my mind.
I'm going to :
- opt-out for each and every one of the partners of YAYmicro
- erase all my pending (about 1000) uploads
- erase the whole portfolio
- cancel my account
but ... It seems we have to do everything manually ... because their support to contributors is not very responsive.
They are not pushing to sell WITH us. So... this is not a good deal with us, the content creators.
Where the same images sell 2000 and more $ elsewhere, on Yay they sell NOTHING.
So the problem are not the products, but the seller.
So... happy new year, without me. And, I hope, you all.
-
I would love to do the same right now but I am still hoping that someone from Yay will either answer my email or post the answer to my questions here.
It might seem like small change to individual contributors who close their accounts with money owing but I really hate the thought of any agency raking in thousands just by moving to a new site.
Seems like, we as contributors have the choice of being screwed out of what they already owe us if we leave or being screwed with crap commissions if we stay.
Evereybody bend over and say Oooowwwwwwwwwww
-
One things ALL you contributors don't have to worry about is that YAY will make sure they get their pound of flesh out of this "Streaming deal".
The best thing to do is move your images elsewhere, if they ain't got images they can't rip you off.
There are numerous sites that give you a much better return than .27c.
-
Does seem more tempting to close the account than get an average of $0.27 on low sales volume. They at least need to push prices up a bit so we can get $0.35 to be in the range of sites that sell more than they do.
-
Come on, Yay. Please come here and tell me I can cash out the $11 you have made me in the last three years before I close my account on your sorry excuse for an agency. You know it's the decent thing to do...
-
I would really like to know if our images will still be available for sale if we are not opted in to streaming/subscription.
-
I would really like to know if our images will still be available for sale if we are not opted in to streaming/subscription.
For sale -where? YayMicro is now closed to image buyers (there's a redirect on the landing page) so unless you tick the opt in box for Yay Images the answer is no. I'm still trying to find out about editorial images - none of my 1700 editorials appear on the Yay Images site (despite it having an editorial category). Waiting on a response to my email regarding this. Regards, David.
-
They sell on other partner sites too. If they keep that going I will just stop uploading and leave the existing images there, with yay subs disabled of course. I can cash out once a year or whatever.

Good point - that I totally overlooked!

I stopped uploading a long time ago and never opted in to subs but I am reluctant to just close my account without an assurance from them that my images will be removed from their partner sites (I am currently only opted in for two of them) and that I will receive the money they already owe me.
-
Some of the 3rd party sites might have a long time before deletion, I think alamy is 6 months, then it can take months to report sales. So I would opt out then wait a year before closing the yay account.
-
I want to hear from YAY that they wont auto opt in to streaming after some time and we are safe to just leave our images there to gather dust on the other partner programs.
-
I sincerely hope they won't do that.
Almost all of my sales come from their partners anyway, certainly all of the decent priced ones.
Once I get enough sales to reach payout I will be saying goodbye to Yay, unless of course they do the decent thing and agree to pay us what they owe us if we leave before then.
-

They will not answer you. When it is about to pay money to contributors for their work they simply disappear……
-
I'm very disappointed with Yay. I'm angry. They are not professional.
I'm waiting payments from pictures sold through partner site (Age Fotostock) since two years. The last mail is about two months ago, but had no answer. In the meanwhile (last year) I have opted out ALL the partner sites. I had to write them several times to delete my pictures in partner sites.
Now I have 28,44 euros on my account and I would like to receive the missing royalties to finally have the due and close my account.
And more, today I have tried to delete my pictures one by one, but IT'S IMPOSSIBLE. I can not manage my images inside the site. They are keeping our pictures against our will. I don't really know if this is a legal way to act.
-
I am pretty sure that the lack of notice (in my case only a few days) of the changes is a legal breach of contract, specially when it was announced just before everything closed down for the Christmas/New year break. I doubt very much if that was a coincidence.
It would be great if any of our fellow members could advise on the legal situation in Yay's home country or what authorities we could contact over there.
Surely if someone closes an existing business as Yay said they were, then any monies owed should be paid, assuming that the company remained solvent.
The fact that they are moving their operations to another company with another business model should make no difference.
I am absolutely certain that Yay's behavior would not be legal in the UK and trading standards or similar would be able to either act or advise on the issue.
I would also be very surprised if they are not in breach of some EU laws as well.
-
Terrific, I just tried deleting some of my images and all I get is an error message.
what is going on.

Hi guys,
The streaming option is, as I mentioned, a great way for bloggers and small businesses to get into image licensing. Most of our customers who use this option are not professional image users. These are people who have never before licensed an image, and their budgets are very limited. There are absolutely no customers who sign up for the streaming plan and use thousands of images. We also have an active program to get streaming customers to upgrade to our other plans. These plans also pay 50 % commission to contributors, which means that earnings for these sales can reach up to $49.50 for a single image. 50 % commission is fair, and we aim to among the agencies that pay a fair commission.
We will look into getting more editorial content onto YAY Images as well. So far editorial has not been in big demand, so it hasn't had priority. In addition our editorial collection must be curated better in order to be it's own category of images.
You can still keep your images even though you are opted-out of YAY Images / streaming. Your images will still be available on our partner sites. We will not automatically opt you in if you are opted-out.
If you are having trouble getting an answer from us, please feel free to contact me directly at [email protected] and I'll look into what has happend. We are not ignoring any requests, but we do have quite a lot to do with too few resources, so sometimes we might need some time to get back to you.
-
Thanks for coming on and answering the questions. I will leave my images up and stop uploading. Sorry but I can't get on board with the streaming service. Still good to hear the facts from a rep though.

Yes, and also how to delete our images without joining Yay images.
-
Come on, Jan. We're still waiting for an answer from Yay....
-
Too busy flogging the dead horse as we say in England.
-
I want to be able to cash out and close down too so it would be nice to know, it's our money and they've already had their cut! These MS sites are getting worse as they slip down the slope.
-
Dear Yay, did you lose your way back to this thread at the same time you lost your common decency?
-
Jan did eventually reply to my original email but it was more a case of trying to sell me on the 'benefits' of the new program. There was no response to my question about being paid out if I wanted to close my account.
I am now waiting for a response to my second email.
-
I've sent emails in the past requesting payout and close of account. Those emails have been ignored. I'm posting here to make other contributors know about their behaviour and attitudes.

I am now waiting for a response to my second email.
Did you ever receive a reply to your 'cash-out' request..?
Not yet.

I got mine.
Yeah? Fascinating. Thanks for your contribution.

Yeah, about year ago I deleted my images and week ago I requested to close my account and payout. And they promised to pay at the next payout.

Had you reached payout threshold? Or did they agree to payout regardless..?

It's under but they promised to payout.

Thanks, I'll send another request to them by email and report back here....

So if they ignore e-mails and there is no automated delete function, how does one delete their account or photos on Yay?
-
Yay closing…
I will be happy when the title of the thread will be Yay closed…
-
Yayimages sale today €0.0526 >:(
The first sale in over a year.
Tonight I shall start the process of closing this portfolio down.

Bite the bullet and delete one by one which is what I will do if I have to; to get away from this horrendous crowd.

To update: I requested payout and closure of account by email which Yay honoured. I'm now happily free of them...
-
Same here, requested closure of account and payout (WAY under the normal threshold) and they did both. Think I had to email Jan directly from memory to get it done.

Same here.
They closed my account.
They never paid me.

Me also, Jan is nice. It's a shame the times we're in, "volume sales" doesn't sell with us anymore... my .10 cent iStock downloads with my inexperienced port paid more than the same size at .25 today... Then volume was real, now its just not.
The only exception is Canva.

Hey Kim :) Nice to see you around again.

Finally closed the YAY account and the images are gone as they promised.
I had great hopes way back in the early days but the sales didn't appear and the final 5 cent sale really did it for me. :'(

Did you get the few cents that they owe you?
:D

They said they would pay so I shall wait and see.
P.S. The money turned up end of March :)

If you are having trouble getting an answer from us, please feel free to contact me directly at [email protected] and I'll look into what has happend. We are not ignoring any requests, but we do have quite a lot to do with too few resources, so sometimes we might need some time to get back to you.
Could you tell me what is the approximate length of time is of "we might need some time to get back to you"? I wrote to you and Linda two weeks ago and didn't even receive an auto responder to acknowledge my email. If you don't know which user I am just pm me on msg and I will tell you. Thanks.

From January to late April and no response? I wouldn't hold my breath. Jan, Linda and the rest may already be collecting their unemployment cheques.

I've waited more than 6 weeks for a reply to any one of my emails. I've lost patience.

I am waiting for payment more than two months. And no answer from support. Same situation with Clipdealer. What to do with such agencies. How to get money from them?

From new year case here , and all i see is some error notification on their site.
does anyone know any working e-mail or something ?
-
If I ran my business like this I'd be on the dole within a month! Sounds like legal help is needed if only to send a message to all agencies that not paying the agreed fees to contributors is wrong, even when closing an account under the minimum payout. They've received the money for our content and so should we.
-
I have tried to request funds from their site however the money never came in after 3 months, so i tried to contact them and was indicated that they would pay asap. Now after 1 month they still have not paid, nor are they picking up the phone or returning emails. Seems like they don't have funds to pay their contributors. Very bad agency.

Received this yesterday by email:
Hello, hello!
Here at the newly formed YayImages, along with new owners and management (working from home), we are undergoing some changes.
As one of our valued contributors, we would like you to be the first to know about some new initiatives at Yay.
First, customers can now purchase your images and vectors for $4.99 each, on our refreshed website.
We are seeing strong traffic and sales growth with the new single sales model as customers start to prefer paying for what they need, when they need it. Some contributors are starting to see average image sale prices move up.
Second, as you know, we are refreshing our contributor dashboard and moving more services away from yaymicro, to the new https://contributors.yayimages.com/ dashboard.
Third, we are launching video footage single sales. The pricing model will be single sales only, customers pay for what they need, when they need it. We will share commissions on a 50/50 basis.
Pricing for video single sales, will be as follows:
SD: $49
HD: $59
4K: $149
The first step you need to take to become a video contributor, is to login to the contributor dashboard and request approval.
Once approved, you will be able to easily send your mp4 and mov source files, through sftp.
With the current stay-at-home measures around the world & the work from home movement, we're seeing a high number of requests for video content.
Click here to login and request approval to become a video contributor.
Stay safe!
Together in photography,
Alex @ the YayImages Team

Pricing for video sounds decent, but starting a "new" agency in this day and age without any unique selling points? Good luck.

I received that same e-mail. I stopped uploading there years ago and they are my lowest-earning agency out of 22 - have made a grand total of $4.29 since 2013, with the last sale in 2014. The idea that people might want to buy single images rather than sign up for subs packages could be true - I have been getting more ODs on SS the past few weeks and even some credit sales on DT. However, I would be surprised if this is a sound basis for kickstarting an agency. Their message reminded me to try to request payment just in case - they don't mention anything about a minimum but I had never uploaded tax documents so did that and will make a request for my paltry sum once those are approved. If the new owners really want to make a good impression then they will honor all payout requests - they seem enthusiastic and I wish them well but won't be holding my breath.
-
In the light of Shutterstock's cash grab, YayImages now sounds like an interesting deal. I might actually look into uploading now!

Downloads of 2.5 cents and 5 cents with YayImages.
They acted far earlier than ss in giving tiny amounts, but no uproar as they're not popular.

That was 4 years ago, they've got new management and reopened.

Only single sales on demand sounds good to me and I would give it a try (if all great content would only be on demand and not in sub packs we could get stock back to a decent pricing).
But looking at their website I only find this
"Buy quality stock images and vectors with a one time credit pack purchase or by monthly subscription."
Still subs.
Where is that on demand stuff they´re talking about?
