Those who are distributing to Alamy are you using Distributing net? If yes, what territories you would suggest to select? And what not?

I red in forums that in some countries sells well, in other countries there are a lot of copy-pastes of images because of Alamy watermark policy. Some authors are complaining about Czech Respublic  and Russia.

What is your practice?

thank you

*Bump

Is anyone doing this? From the Alamy forums i read that most do use the distributors

I guess i'll try it out, merely increases the chances of sales anyway

I do use the distribution. But no sales yet at all, I just joined Alamy in April 2008.

BTW: welcome cyril - maybe we can meet at the next ILA in Berlin (nice images).  ;)

I use the distributors, it has it's ups and downs as you've no doubt read on the forums, if you do get a sale via a distributor you only get 45% (40% to distributor and Alamy take 15%) but it's still very cost effective for me, the only real problem is when they don't pay Alamy because you don't get your money, it's never happened to me but I know some that it has (normally Czech and Russian sales).

Distributor sales account for about 10-20% of my overall sales.

I have distribution enabled, I put for every country (I dont care where you are from if you are giving me money :) you get less commission, but still works out to be good.

I have had 8 of these sales, all have paid so far, but I think most have been slower (around 3 months?). personally better to get the sale on macro price with less commision and a bit slower to pay than miss out :)

I'd just tick all the countries for distribution. The percentages are a bit less but I don't think you'd make the sale without it.  A little over half my sales at Alamy this month were through distributors with an average price of about $120.

I do and I selected all countries, but out of the 30 or so sales I had it was never through their distribution network...

PS: Good to see you here Cyril ;-)

Nice images Cyril! I have been on Alamy for a year with about now 68 images. I had 2 sales in the first three month. Since then nothing...
Probably you need a couple of thousand images to have regular sales there.

Consider that you will sell about 1 out of each 1000 images (on average)... You can perform better if your images are outstanding and very well keyworded...

About distribution, I would stay away from Czech republic and Russian Federation... and lately Israel... those generate sales, but for such a low amount that even EL's at SS amount for more...

I hope your statistic is wrong HermanM. There a lot of work to do for upload 1000 pictures and then sell one of them ;) and then another 2000 and zero. And then another 1000 and two of them.

I sure do hope that someday I could buy all my photo equipment with money earn from photography. I was trying micro for couple of months, but i was getting sick with those smiling faces, dumb business type of pictures with smiling faces, idiotic expressions, headphones, laptops, shiny apples and such stuff. I just could set my mind to do something like that. I believe that with Alamy and PS i could still enjoy photography and maybe sell something.

i you have time check please check my portfolios (only a few pictures at the moment)

1 sale per month with 1000 images in portfolio?
That seems very pessimistic.
I have 265 photos online with them and so far 27 sales in 2 years.

Christophe. I believe that your sales on Alamy are much better than most. From my experience and many that i have read about on various forums, one sale per month per 1000 images is an average that many mention. Now, your images are beautiful but I'm curious of two things. First,  do you have one image that accounts for the majority of sales? because this may be a "lucky" or "star" image that just appeals to many buyers and skews the average. Second, out of curiosity, do any of your cut outs / still-life's of everyday objects sale? I see tons this sort of stuff on Alamy and I've always been curious if it sales. Thanks.

One sale per two-thousand is more correct for me but my sales are always very high and i have tons of images so its worth for me. I do have some isolated stuff over there but it don't sells for me. Alamy works most for me for editorial and niche stuff.

hi freezy

your port is small (i see on IS) but beautiful,

with out selling off your work

-i'm telling you that because i like your work very match it's "different"-

Sorry for being so ignorant, but how do you opt for this? I have been looking, but don't find how to do it.

change your distribution settings here

http://www.alamy.com/stock-photography-distribution.asp

novel use settings here

http://www.alamy.com/noveluse.aspx

I am opted in for everything.  I have had a couple distribution sales, but sales in general at alamy have been a bit slow.

A sale per one thousand images online per month is not to bad... Considering the huge amount of images available and the more and more that get accepted each day.  It is the average of averages that I've seen over many forums and from reading a lot of info on Alamy... Remember that many many great sellers dont even post on forums at all, they are busy shooting...  ;D

Another trend I have seen in my case is that images get sold as they age.  Sort of an incubation period, attributed by many to the way editorial images on books and other publications are selected, not the usual "uploaded, approved and sold in less than 24 hrs" we see at micros..

To have 27 sales for 260+ images is outstanding... There was a report on Alamy forums of someone with many many sales above the usual average, it can happen.  It is the nature of distribution of events over a population, following a Gaussian curve.  Most of us, well, are in the middle, average portfolios with average sales....  :D :D

Everything I have on Alamy, except one photo, is Editorial. Do I want to include novel distribution?

Thanks guys (and girls) I have this enormous link on the website to my portfolio and when I saw the short one, I went and found the "link to your portfolio" page, that has something short and sweet. I had been using the search and then clicked on my name. It would be about three lines in this message. DOH!

I'm only up to the beginning of June for editing, keywording and uploading my newest photos. Maybe when I get a break I can add some more. Only 41 now with 62 views and no sales. After looking at the first uploads, I can see the new photos are better and I'm almost embarrassed to have the ones up there that I do. It's only going to get better!   ;D

Closer cropping in camera, more selective taking only one best shot of each subject. Just need that first sale to feel like it's worth the time and effort. The last photos in the search are my original three that got me accepted. Yes, only three. Back when I started, the review took a month or two, so I was just adding one and doing another, then adding one more. I was thinking of what I would do for the fourth. One day I got the email saying I was accepted, with ftp privileges. Nice surprise.

First (Stone Mountain) and third (statue) photos were taken with a 10D and an admittedly soft Canon 28-135 lens. The second photo (pill bottle) was with a 100mm macro that is crisp and has some snap. Most of the racing is from a 40D and the very adequate 100-400 L but doesn't match the 70-200 that I had to sell to get the new camera and lens.

If the Editorial question alone doesn't give enough information, take a peek and tell me if this type of material is appropriate for distribution. It's possibly not of interest outside of the US and UK?
