I am going to purchase a polarizing filter but when I did some research I realize the prices vary wildly. ($50-$500)

Can anyone give me some advice on a good medium price filter? I don't know where to start.

Thanks!

I think my B&H 79mm circular polarizer was about $300 Canadian and it is fabulous.  I have a cheap one too, it vingettes so badly it is virtually useless.

A polarizer is one of the most useful tools you can add to your kit, so make sure you get the best that you can afford.

I bought a non-circular one and I'm not satisfied with it.  Can't explain but my Sigma 17-70 has trouble focusing with it, and in low light, focus is almost impossible.  I "think" that it is due to the use of a non-circular...  if I'm wrong, please someone correct me! ???

So it ended in my bag and I'm now looking for a circular one (which is more $$$).

The hoya filters are normally ok and reasonably priced (about $100).

A few years back I bought a 77mm Nikon circular polarizing filter for use with my Canon lenses.  Price was moderate and the filter works just fine.  I don't know what the prices are today.

thanks everyone for the feedback

le_cyclope - I just read here that linear polarizers won't work with auto-focus

Locally I seem to be only finding "B+W Circular Slim" in the $120-$150 range. I think I will probably go for it.

Well in fact I knew that I would have to be careful with the exposure because of the filter but with braketting I tought I could handle it.

But I can't see why the autofocus has problem...

Anyway, I'm on my way to buy a circular one too!
