Title: Canon 5D Mark II in stock anywhere? ..
Post by: leaf on November 13, 2008, 05:10
well.. I have preordered this camera and they are always pushing the delivery date on it.  I am starting to get curious to when it actually is going to be in stock.

How about we post here if anyone actually see's that a store has them in stock.

I saw it "in stock" in some online shops in Germany - you can check idealo.de portal, it's easy to navigate even not knowing German. I saw it in several shops at idealo a few days ago, but now I only see it in one shop. This is a direct link - http://www.idealo.de/preisvergleich/OffersOfProduct/1169959I-1-15_-eos-5d-mark-ii-canon.html?ts=1226561996762

hmm.. don't think it is in those stores.  Either it says 'released on .. such and such a date' or the ones who first say they have it in stock, then say 'pre order' when you got to the camera page...

I am not sure any store has it yet... I hope canon is making a super stock pile of them :)

ok.. found a little tid bit of info

Quote
This is what is going to be happening with pre-orders and the first shipment of 5D Mark II’s.

Retailers have to prove there has been money exchanged from a customer for a pre-order.

1) Canon must receive a fax from the retailer proving money has been taken for the 5D Mark II. Sales receipts or whatever.

2) Once this has been done by retailers, then Canon will set the allocation as to which stores get what. No proof of preorder…. No camera shipment.

3) Canon must receive this information by Friday, November 14, 2008 or no cameras for you.

4) This basically assures no one is getting the $2799 pricing.

and a little more

Quote
2008 November

12th In an update to the UK Jessops info below, we're told by someone who pre-ordered one from them a few weeks ago, that after speaking to someone from Canon, they were expecting the camera in store on the 26th November.

Meanwhile Amazon.co.uk are saying:
"This item is due to be released on November 30, 2008."

...and Amazon.com are now saying:
"Usually ships within 1 to 3 weeks"

I've also heard from someone in Canada, who's dealer (Leo's, Vancouver ~$3100 BO) couldn't do anything about the price hike, but were including an 8GB Extreme CF card.
For a more complex version of what they think is happening in Canada, see the item at CR

Also in the UK, even play.com is saying Nov 30th (~£2500 kit)
As to when new orders are likely to be shipped, dealers are a bit quiet on that one...

In Germany a dealer commented that Canon Germany had informed them that they will get 5 EOS 5D Mark II on Friday the 28th of November, even if they had preorderd 10. Also Mediamarkt (electronic store chain) said that a Canon representative has told them that they will get one 5D2 on the 28th of November.

In the US a 'local' dealer was told by Canon that they could only initially order 5 cameras.

this isn't looking good.  1 to 5 cameras PER STORE  :-\  I am REALLY hoping to get this before Dec 13th ... not sure it will happen.

bad news indeed!  :(

the price is very likely to increase and there seems to be a shortage of supply too.and by the time we could buy it  our MSG discounts coupons could expire too .

for me what is worse if I can't get the camera around xmas than I'd have to buy it from the uk and  they talk about a GBP 2500 price tag ,which is about usd 3700 and may be even more:(

I found this site recommended in the DP review forum.  They have the 5D Mark II listed for £1,799.99.  It is out of stock and the price might go up but it is much cheaper than the other UK sites I have looked at.  Best to do some research, as I have never used this site.

The Canadian news is not good either.  I preodered 3 weeks ago, and I will be lucky if i see it before Christmas.

Henry's is the only store getting shipments the first time around.  With 400 preorders and only 1 shipment of an estimated 75 cameras, it doesn't look so good.

This is another debacle for Canon, their dealers and everyone.  Despite the off the charts demand, there is a reason Nikon is catching up.  You never really hear about this with their stuff.  But whatever, I guess thats the price you have to pay for sticking with one system

hi

from Greece, No Cameras here yet, they told me might be by the end of November
They accept about 150 cameras in the first shippment but the preorders (mine incl) are a lot more.

about price...

seems quite steady start about 2350 euro in sept (body only) now they have prices for preorder between

2200 to 2300 euros

I'd like to learn how much is the prices in your countries (especialy EU)

Thanx
Bye

Thank you very much for posting this. I will check that site and try to find out if it's a  reliable one,but here again the bad news is they say they could take no orders before feb 2009:( I don't think it'd be any different  on other retailers in the EU.

perhaps canon found problems with noise on new sensor and delaying the sales because they are desperately trying to fix the problem! LOL!

so much talk about low noise on 50D, I bought one, and guess what, it has more noise than 40D and 400D even at ISO 100. Image quality is not bad, but far from low noise. Canon lied to us. Thed didnt make any improvement in terms of noise, at contrary they made it even worse. 15MP on this sensor is a bit too much.

How can you say Canon lied to you?  If that was the case, there would be a class action lawsuit from every direction against Canon for false advertising and everything else regarding the product.  There were plenty of samples available from many sources, so its up to you as a consumer to have a look to see if you like (or accept) the quality of the product you are going to buy.  Don't blame Canon for a responsibility that rests on your shoulders.

As a sidenote:  Nikon cameras (from a Canon user) seem to be very good too.  However, the noise is nicely masked by the fact that they have huge amounts of NR done in camera JPEG to compensate making their photos look a bit plastic too.  There have been many questions regarding this.  What bothers me is that RAW files are not compares, its always in-camera JPEG production.  So people from the outside look and say:  OOOH it looks so clean.  Meanwhile, its not the power of the sensor thats awesome, its some stupid mathematical algorithm thats compensating.

As for Canon taking too long, there was a problem with the focus (if I can believe my rep) and they have held back until they can update the firmware so that the out of box camera doesn't have any immediate flaws.  Interesting? yes..  Surprising? no... mainly because the same sort of thing happened to the 50D

I'm just curious to see how well the autofocus will perform in sporting situations and wildlife shoots

it may be also due to the foreign exchange, with the currency going crazy like a roller coaster. remember the cameras are not being produced in the same country, so parts, maunfacture,etc.. can be affected by this market volatility.
so instead of increasing the price, and increasing again, and again, maybe it's easier to delay saying it's a technical flaw.
just guessing, as usual. like every business and government agencies, we all are affected. no one knows .

From what I remember from the mid september press release, Canon said the the 5D MKII would be available in «late november».

So I think it is premature to talk about problems with the camera...

I remember when they launched the 40D, they used the same tactic by creating an artificial shortage so buyers put themselves on a waiting list (which I did!).

One month after the launch, the store where I bought it lowered the price by about 200$ !

So my bet is a top price from the end of november (with few cameras available per store to justify that top price) followed by a 2 - 300$ lowered price right after Xmas...

We'll see!
Claude

I can make do with my 5D for at least another 6 months.  The exchange rate could make cameras more expensive but a global recession might make them slash prices after the initial sales burst.

ah yes, the old "get them anxious" sale tactic. this , along with the other "better hurry, it's the last one in stock", must get a lot of impulse buyers into trouble. ;D
also, i wonder how many cancelled their backorder when they heard the price change.

Thanks for the update.  I preordered at Amazon on Sept 18.  At this rate I wonder if the thing will arrive before Christmas.

To be honest, I am tempted to cancel and wait until the Spring when prices are lower and bugs are worked out.

I have never been a first adopter of any new gear in the past and now I see that I saved myself a lot of aggravation that way ;)

Post by: jsnover on November 19, 2008, 17:46
I didn't pre-order, figuring I could wait a few months for the initial supply problems and inevitable firmware upgrades to get worked out. It requires quite a bit of restraint as I didn't buy a 5D, so my excellent 20D is looking a bit prehistoric these days :)

If you had a trip coming up (as I think Leaf does) it might be different, but we're staying at home for Christmas this year, so waiting doesn't have any big drawbacks for me.

I am hearing in Australia they may have worked out a deal with someone like GE Money to do a No Repayments for 3 years deal. So you can buy it, and as long as you pay the money back before 3 years, there will be no interest.

All I have seen & heard still says late Nov like Nov 29th.

According to Northlight Images (http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/cameras/Canon_5d2_3d_7d.html):
"Canon USA is still on target to ship the EOS 5D Mark II to US dealers by the end of November, as stated in our original press release dated September 17th"

Canon Japan (http://cweb.canon.jp/camera/eosd/5dmk2/index.html) agrees with that:
EOS 5D Mark II body November 29th sale schedule

Hopefully places start getting it late next week.  Doesn't matter though - I never buy 1st shipment/1st generation anything.  It always has issues.

Why is that bad? Thats very typical for a bayer-interpolated image and/or a less-than-perfect (zoom) lens. Using zooms instead of primes on the 5D mark II is propably a waste of a good camera IMHO.

And that crop is NOT from the linked full size 200 ISO image!

(yes, I have ordered mine when the camera was first announced, can't stand the wait!)
Title: Re: Canon 5D Mark II in stock anywhere? ..
Post by: CofkoCof on November 27, 2008, 12:16
Do you see that black dots that shouldn't be there? How can a bad lens "come up" with those?

PS: Yeah it looks like the crop isn't from that image, but still, black dots are visible on iso 200 image also.

Colored fringes around light objects can make bayer interpolation fail in many ways.
(Still waiting for that foveon-type megapixel beast..:) )

We should also remember we are peeping pixels here, some black dots in difficult conditions doesn't worry me a bit.

Well I am completely bummed.  I had ordered from Amazon on Sept 17.   Still no word as of today (Nov. 28), which is really discouraging considering that people who ordered the same time from Adorama, Onecall, Ritz, etc. are already getting theirs shipped.

Just cancelled the order from Amazon and ordered from OneCall.

FWIW, if anyone is like me and wants a 30 day return policy instead of 7 days (adorama), 10 days (ritz), or 15 days (B&H) then it is worth considering OneCall.  I've bought from them before and they are reliable.

My reasoning on the longer return period is that of the 5 consecutive Canon DSLR's I have owned, three had to be returned for replacement because of buggy issues - flash that wouldn't meter correctly, clusters of bad pixels on the sensor, and worst of all - focus problems.

To be fair, the 5D was perfect out of the box and is still perfect three years later.  Hopefully the 5D II will be also, but in case it isn't, that 30 days gives more time to discover any bugs.

Stephan, could you share the rest of your impressions from using the camera?  Any focus issues?  How about noise at various ISO's?  What's the dynamic range like, and over all image quality?

As one of the lucky few who actually has this camera in your hands, your impressions would be very much appreciated :)

I'm confused,  Helen.  Is the 5D II not considered "digital equipment" then?  If not, then what is "digital equipment"?

FWIW 30 days return policy at OneCall is still much better.

Cameras are definately on 14 day return (with no re-stocking fee); digital  equipment really refers to video/editing equipment.

Hi Cof,

I read the thread, thanks so much for posting. I don't know if it is anything to worry about. From what I understand part of the limit is only to clips running over 12 minutes. So apart from a Hitchcock movie called " The Rope " I don't think anyone runs a 12 minute continuos clip for stock or anything for that matter except maybe time lapse.
By the way check out " The Rope " if you like Hitchcock. He ran full ten minute reels without editing and to change rolls the camera would pan behind a sofa or something and go to dark then he would start the next reel and bring it back into the light from the same location, pretty cool.
Just to be sure I have a call into CPS " Canon Professional Services " and I am waiting on a call back.

Best,
AVAVA

Yeah I've seen that movie, I'm a fan of Hitchcock (love the old movies, they all had quite long scenes without cuts, some find it boring though :D).

I think that only viewing might be limited, though I'm not 100% sure. Please share the canon's respone when you get it.

I am glad I am not in this nervous queue for the first shipments :) If things will go well I'll buy my 5d Mk II somewhere in March-April after the first rush fill be over; and hopefully after possible initial issues will be fixed and firmware updated...

Just my opinion but with the world economy we are going to face over the coming year or longer I would not invest in new gear unless it will help directly your sales. Stuff it in your mattress for now till the economy stabilizes a bit.

You definitely have a valid point, but I want the MkII because I want to get into stock video.

 Hi RmR,

I think that growth and diversity in your companies product is a good investment. Buying something so you can expand your company in new directions can be a great choice. Also good for the brain to have some fresh food like motion to keep it strong and happy.

I'm considering cancelling my preorder of the 5dII due to the black spot issue. I might just have to get a 50d for XMAS and wait a few years before upgrading. I would just have to avoid buying any ef-s lenses (I'm currently shooting with a 300d and need the upgrade badly). Anyone else on the fence on this?

Why not get an old 5D?  They are going cheap now and I think the image quality is superior to the 50D.  I am going to wait and see if the 5D MKII comes down in price next year but I am happy to stick with my 5D.

is that black spot issue phenomenal? according to what I read on some other sites just some (few) users experienced that and it may be resulting from several variables (camera malfunction, post process etc)but for the time being it too early to tell if  it is a general problem. since not so many 5d m2 users out there to figure out how common that problem might be.
anyway I am so desperate to replace my old DSLR as it is on it's last legs and I will be getting 5d m2 as soon as I can ,despite the risks of being an early adopter.

somebody seems to have found a solution for the black dot issue.I still hope that is not a general problem or will be fixed by canon completely .
