Just got a mail from Dissolve-  that since my clips are solf for $49 on other sites (they obviously point to VB)
they are adjusting the prices on my HD versions to match the same price.

I wrote to them that the $49 price reflects a price for subscribers who pay a monthly fee.
Without that fee the price is the same ($79)

am i missing something or are they wrong??

No you are right
But if they lower the clips to $49 whats your cut?
VB gives you the $49

We've had same situation with Dissolve and we ranted about it on our page too. After this we got email from them with "Dissolves pricing model allows us to reasonably compete, helping to ensure we dont lose customers to lower-priced competition. It also reinforces our commitment to our customers, making sure they are offered fair, competitive pricing."

also we ranted that sales are crap and they replied; "Please be assured that we are active in marketing and selling Dissolve content, regardless its price point."

We seriously expect in following months sales pick up at Dissolve if they already force us to not dump our prices with VB or lower pricing tiers at Pond5.

BUT, yet again we understand their forced higher pricing... it's our duty to not let agencies devalue our work.

What's more important - the price that the customer pays, or the price that the artist receives?

Dissolve is a third-rate agency with low sales that pays contributors a lower percentage than the leading video agencies. The bottom line is if they reduce your prices and you keep selling there, you only hurt yourself. Get them to delete your portfolio & cut your losses.

Exactly.  I closed my account there.  They were in here (MSG) all gung-ho trying to promote their business to get more content.  Once they got enough content, their attitude towards contributors flip flopped.  And their arrogance blossomed like flowers on a wet, warm spring day.

Dissolve is clueless apparently. Because the only way they know how to compete with their competitors, is to join them in a race to the bottom.

Maybe if Dissolve could work on improving their business model, their marketing or strenghtening their USP's instead, they wouldn't be bothered by low-priced competitors.
But they don't have anything that makes them unique, lowering prices is they only weapon they have. Worse is they are spinning it as if it's the contributors fault their sales are dwindling.

It's funny (or sad?) how an agency with such low sales allow themselves to behave like this to contributors.
It's obvious that if I took this to any lawyer they would tell me that what matters is the amount they pay me, not the sell price.

And the whole upload limit crap?

I almost don't upload there anymore.

DO NOT UPLOAD TO DISSOLVE

They do not care about contributors at all. It means nothing to them that Videoblocks gives you a 100% royalty and they give you 30%.

But off course it's a free world (some of it) and you can do what you want.

Is anyone having good sales at Dissolve?

If you upload to VideoBlocks, you better not upload to Dissolve.  Not worth selling at $49 and get only 30% commission vs near 100% commission on VideoBlocks.  A lot of contributors left VideoBlocks because of this issue.  I don't miss contributing to Dissolve at all.

Whereas they probably would have been better leaving Dissolve because of this issue, rather than Videoblocks!

Once you start forbidding (or strongly advising against) users to upload to competitors without en exclusivity agreement you're digging your own grave...

Only insecure and threatened agencies would do that.

I'm pretty new to dissolve and had a few sales in the last few months which nets me $23.70.
However this month I've had 3 downloads which has net me $53.34 - thats $17.78 each sale and not the usual $23.70.

Where does this money go to? Why are they charging the customer $79.00 for each clip but I'm getting the % from    $59.25? Doesn't seem fair to me?

For me Dissolve is my third best selling agency, not far behind Pond5. I guess my clips fit well with their customer base.

and how would you define their "customer base"?

I have no idea, I can only say that my clips sell over there. I don't like it that they lowered the prices either, I'm just providing some data. There are people here saying that Dissolve has no sales, my experience is the opposite.

You should GTFO of Dissolve.  They don't respect contributors.  I and many others got out a few years ago.

I would not get so emotional about it.
They arrived late in the video market, not easy at all to make a splash in the market.
They tried this idea of having a "selected collection"
They made a couple of huge mistakes and turned a lot of contributors against them. Video is not photography, the supply of decent videographer is limited.
If you are pretending of having a selected collection, you have to offer something extra to contributors.
But they where offering the worst percentage, the most picky and stupid reviewers, limited bandwidth (big, big hint of an agency that i going to die), the longest review time, no info at all about your portfolio, I mean you don't even know which of your file have sold.
Frankly, what . was the point to submit to them?
RIP Dissolve, I had high hope on them, but I think they got everything wrong.
Although I understand that video footage is a market extremely hard to get into, Dissolve is an example of how you can do everything 100% wrong

Agree that Dissolve chose the wrong strategy. They seemed to have penalized contributors that are with Storyblocks. If you have content with SB they'll drop your clips to $49, the same price they an be purchased on SB. The difference in commission is $44.8 from SB compared to $14.7 from Dissolve. That was never going to go down well with contributors. I still get sales from them but haven't added to my collection for a few years, why should I, they don't offer any incentive and don't really have a valid explanation for their strategy. Since many contributors would avoid them for this reason, I'd imagine their collection is tiny compared to P5/SS and probably smaller than SB.

I'm not on Dissolve, but I'm trying to imaging the resources they're spending on this initiative. One, or possibly several, people... cross referencing every clip and every author... to see which items need their price changed. I'm sure they could spend that time and money on something more useful!

Totally agree. It shows they're not truly professional if they resort to this kind of tactic
