Anyone else get an email regarding this? There was some complimentary language in the email but  I'd like to know if it's just a form letter before I pat myself on the back!  :D

I'd like to see your work added to this collection. I believe you represent the top
quality Fotolia has to offer.

If anyone else got a letter, I would like to compare what was said in each.

Thanks!

yes I did receivethe same letter.

I am currently silver at Fotolia. I looked at the royalty structure (for non-exclusives) and this offer makes no sense for me (from an increased rank perspective, not sure about increased traffic).

If I would be gold and could make it to emerald, now that would be a completely different matter ...

yep... got the same email.  With the other post regarding Chris Anderson's FREE in full force, seems like an interesting project to watch.

Wish FT well.

Cheers,  JC

I got that email back on July 2nd.
The last line was:
"So think about it and I will follow up next week to get your input and answer questions."

Still haven't heard anything more about it.

Yes I got one too. Worded the same. As a silver non-exclusive I would be bumped to gold and would earn 2% more . . .
I am skeptical about the increase in traffic but then what do I know?
I asked Chad for some clarification. You need to volunteer 30+ images to qualify for the rank crank, but you do have some say in what images they select.

I'm considering it but not rushing in.

Haven't got that mail.... but if i read correctly you are saying you need to donate 30+ free images to have that rank crank.?...
Looks to me they need more free images.

I feel the same way.

It sounds like mostly silver canister contributors were offered?? hmmm?? Anyone gold get the offer? Another issue I have is they want to include best selling images in the package. I have a hard time seeing the benefit, great for Fotolia though.

That is correct. 30 or more images but I should add that the scheme only offers the 'small' size for free . . .

Here's the relevant part of the email that I received...

Quote
Fotolia has created a pilot program called Crank Your Rank that will drive more sales and traffic for our participating contributors. Every day Fotolia receives requests from potential and existing partners to trade traffic with images at no charge. An example of this type of request comes from Microsoft where Fotolia provides small images for free to their users in exchange of Microsoft promoting Fotolia and the contributor. While there is no commission on this type of transaction Microsoft does drive a lot of traffic to Fotolia and the contributors who submitted images resulting in increased sales. We have a few images to work from but we are looking for higher quality to represent the Fotolia collection. As a result Fotolia is building a small library of images that will be used in this manner.

Contributors who allow us to select 30+ (Small sized) images to add to the library will receive a one time rank increase as a reward. So if you are a Silver Rank you will instantly become a Gold ranked member, or Gold to Emerald. In addition Fotolia will push the traffic from these partners to the contributors portfolio for increased sales.

For those of you that received the email, how close are you to achieving the next rank on your own (i.e., without this offer)?

Currently at 3569 sales...  A long way away!

Please remember: FT has a long track record, measured in years, of not doing what's good for their contributors.  This doesn't appear to be any different.  The increased traffic will absolutely not be worth giving away your best-sellers, even for small size.  And, by the way, do you really think that those "requests from potential and existing partners" are going to stop at the "small" size??  Not on your life.

Think think think.

I do really think 30+ (which is an open ended figure btw) is too many.

IS and Microsoft had a similar set up with the IS exclusives. Except that IS exclusives were eventually paid if their images were picked. You couldn't donate images - admin would make a lightbox of their favorites and then MS would pick the images they wanted to use.

I was in on this originally and had just one photo in the collection.  There is so much traffic that while the pic was probably downloaded thousands of times for free I ended up selling what would have in my opinion been a very unproductive pic (based on similar shots of similar looking girls in my portfolio's sales) and it sold over 100 times.  Not a crazy number of sales, but again..more than it would have had under normal circumstances I am sure.  Including multiple EL's.  Here is a link to the photo originally used... http://us.fotolia.com/id/3029748

I've added more pics this time around and have received a bump in rank to Emerald (I was at 9950 sales when the criteria got changed from 10,000) so I am very happy about the increase in commission and believe the added sales from the increased visibility on some of my best pics plus the extra % should work out to be a lucrative deal for me.

I remember you saying that when the ranking levels were increased you had just missed out on Emerald (as you have confirmed above) __ however I've noticed that you have actually been Emerald for some months. The way I read your speil above suggests that this is a very recent change. Has the offer been running for some time and, if so, how are the lucky ones chosen?

I just had my rank "cranked" to Emerald about a week or so ago (maybe two..time is all blending to me right now) so it is fairly recent for me.  I think the original letter came to me about 6 weeks ago or so and from what I understand photographers are hand selected based on their portfolio's compatibility with the needs of the gallery.  It was definitely not a spam type deal so if you did get the letter I would perceive it as a compliment even if you don't intend to participate as only a handful of invitations were sent out from what I know.

Thanks. I quess it makes quite an interesting offer, especially if you just lost out on Emerald by a few weeks/months.

Wow, so it has sold over 100 times in a month or so? I have also accepted this offer too but I didn't notice any significant changes in sales.

No, this was a test image for me from a while back (maybe 6, 8 months or so).  As I mentioned, not a crazy amount of sales but similar photo's in the same series were hardly looked at so it definitely did impact the revenue on that particular shot.  I'm not sure if any of the new photo's are even showing up yet.
