Title: Opt in option for Adobe Stock Vectors and Illustrations in Free collection
Post by: MatHayward on October 25, 2021, 13:32
Hi All,

If you have vectors and/or illustrations online in your Adobe Stock portfolio, check the contributor portal between now (Monday, Oct 25) and November 2. Selected assets may be available for you to nominate to be accepted into the Adobe Stock Free collection. If your nominated asset is accepted after the nomination window closes on November 2 you will be paid an upfront amount of $5 per asset. It's a short window for nominations so act fast!

Let me know if you have any questions,

Mat Hayward

I don't have that information available to share. You should see how many are eligible to nominate from your portfolio in a blue banner at the top of the portal now.

thanks,

Mat

Mat,

is it really the right way for an agency whose business model is to sell images to now give them away for free?

I see this as a huge danger for the future. Potential customers learn from the fact that there are more and more images that are given away. Why should they still buy images in the future?

The problem is that in your free selection there are many really very good images. And the - in part very successful - contributors I have spoken to, who release their images for your free selection, only do so behause the algorithm has already buried the images, even though they are good.

From my point of view this way is wrong and will lead to massive problems. Also for you. Many contributors only see the short-term additional earnings. If they were to look ahead into the future, they would have to keep their distance from this in my view.

I am well aware that the sale of software products is more important to you. And you can integrate the free images into them. But in the long run, the signal you are sending out is economically wrong!

Regards, Wilm

Thanks for the feedback Wilm. We are very closely watching activity in the Free collection to ensure we do not cannabalize the paid collection. As you noted, that would not be in the best interest of any of the parties involved. Instead, the Free collection has served as an outstanding tool to recruit new customers. When someone stops by who is attracted to Free and then finds an image in the paid collection that they want to use in addition to, or instead of the file they were originally drawn in by, they convert to being a paid customer. That's a win/win for contributors and agency alike. We continue to ensure the files that are accepted into Free are of good quality, but are not current best sellers. So far, this strategy has worked well.

Thanks again,

Mat

Hi Matt. How long will the my free vector content being free after they are accepted into the program?

Will it be forever free? Or will there be a time period where it will become paying-asset again?

if it is the same as the photos than one year after they select and usually pay you. Once one year is up it goes back to the regular status (paying asset) on your portfolio.

Yep, that's what I understand. But I hope Matt can re-confirm this.

They are not talking about "photos". They wrote about "assets" - which include photos, vectors, illustrations...
Your vectors would be part of the free selection for exactly one year and afterwards it would become part of the paid section again.

When the promotion was advertised for the first time, 290 of my images were eligible for the free section. Now in the second step there are 68. If all were chosen, I would receive €340.00. But, as I have heard from other contributors, not all, but only a part of the images are selected. I guess that the participation in this action would bring me at most €100,00 - if at all.

Now I have looked once. Of these 68 images I have sold 8 images in the past week at AS. If I extrapolate that to a year, I could achieve 416 downloads with these images. My RPD at AS is in 2021 at €1,09. So the images could bring me €454,50.

Additionally, I do see a problem of cannibalization. For many of the selected files there are similar images in my portfolio, which are probably no longer sellable, if the counterpart is available for free.

In addition, the images also sell at other agencies. Perhaps they would no longer be bought there if the interested parties see that the images are available for free at AS.

And then there is something that is not quite clear to me. The number of images for this campaign is limited, isn't it? If it is limited, then the free selection should already be filled by now. Why are more images being sought now? Is the selection to be expanded successively?

One last question: If the images in the free selection were downloaded very often, would they increase in ranking during the year? Would the visibility of these images be significantly improved if they were available for sale again after a year? Or would the previous ranking of the images remain the same?

@Wilm easy don't select images that sell on Adobe or anyplace other. From experience, very few images are selected.

Yes, confirmed. Vectors/Illustrations selected from your nominated files will remain in the Free collection for one year from the time the payment is applied to your account.

Thanks,

Mat

I'd be bloody embarrassed to offer creatives $5 for unlimited free use for one year. And I'd be ashamed to accept it.

- 2nd Nov is deadline, after that how many days tell us which stock selected? and how soon they will credit funds to account?

- does "free stock" will have access to public(non-paid members) and paid members?

I'm not sure exactly how many days it will be after the nomination window closes before the final selections are made. Once you are notified of how many files were selected, the payment will have been made into your account.

People with an Adobe ID can download from the Free collection. They do not need to be paid subscribers.

Thanks for the questions,

Mat Hayward

I'm sorry but I cannot answer specific use-case license questions. Please refer to the license agreement for details on allowable use.

Thanks for understanding,

Mat Hayward

Hi Mat, I would like to know if in the near future you are thinking of nominating clips for the free collection?... and if so what will be the upfront amount per asset?

Looking at the counts of various types of content, it appears there are lots of new illustrations and vectors in the free collection this morning.

Compared to my last check November 15th, vectors have jumped to 112k (seems to vary by which sort order you pick) 79k (from 18.5k) and illustrations to 21k from 7k. Total free collection is now 959,977 - not far from a million high-quality free images :(

You should see payments arrive in your account balance before the end of the day today if you opted in and any of your assets were approved.

Hi Mat, I did receive an email about accepted content. Will there be more wave of acceptance as I only had 6% accepted from the preselection/nominated assets, I expected more since so many were elligible? (I'm happy with what I have but was curious as to what to expect).

Thanks!

Hi. I have a question. I just got an e-mail. I have 8 vector files selected. When I look at my Adobe Contributor account, it says "in review" on my other vector files. I sent about 80 vector files. Can files with "in review" also be selected later? Or is the time over? It says FREE on my 8 selected files. Others still say "in review".

I know the numbers are different for different people, but from the past and other people, and Mat, large numbers of individual images are not being accepted. Same thing with photos when that happened. 6% might be better than average.  :)

Last time for photos, there was a second round of selection, and back then, there was a final date, up until that date, more images could be accepted.

And the free section is now over 1 million items...

I'm not even in still photography I sure saw how free and nearly free pretty much ended the stock video business for individual contributors, between all these deals the agencies (market makers) do and the subscriptions that will earn us more "incremental revenue" it's over, the agencies will do ok, the stuff is selling but not for us.

I think startups and startups people grow up in a very crime free sheltered world in which theft and piracy doesn't exist, why wouldn't anyone download the entire free collection here and from every other free site, for their own use to to resell it illegally under the table?.

Inflation is taking the price of everything to the moon except stock content, it's staying the course and racing to the bottom with free or nearly free.

The agencies are making money and I think it's through all the side deals and back channels they have with agencies around the world.

This is worse that the stock market and the market makers that traders complain about so much, you can see bank in day, swing and options trading but not here.

I think I know why the agencies give work (product) away for free, it's not their content, it's ours and our loss.

I was messaging with a college student last week, he does storm chasing and I do a lot of editorial and his first question was "how do you sell it?, stock is free".  I said yea, used to make $3500/month doing this but not anymore and looking for a 2nd job, it's not good.

Today I'm looking for a new job period.
