Hello fellow photographers,

I see that 500PX is a great way to earn money from your photos. 70% provision, good prices and sales are made.

Who else has success with 500PX?

I'm avoiding them due to giant previews and useless corner water marks.

Some people report good sales, but I would say it is still early days. Check the other threads about 500px.

In 6 months, 500px climbed on the 4th position for me, behind the big 3, with more $ than a full year with DT, 123RF, P5, Alamy, FAA, or DP

What do they want? Editorial?

Just made my first sale on there - made $30.... Better than $0.30! :) I don't have many images up on there but it's incentivized me to change that.

I also noticed there that people are making first sale there with for example only 20 till 100 photos online. This is a very good results. I think the reason for this is the still smaller competition then on Microstock. But as soon everyone will hear about this this will change :).

I don't have a lot of images there, but zip sales either. I've read where they were going to fix the crummy watermark issue but if their solution is that tiny watermark, I am out. I only have 40 images up there, which I did to get a feel for the site. I do like the 70% but they need to be more serious about something as simple as a watermark.

I believe they address a different market. Landscapes, for example, don't sell so well on microstock, while landscapes are very popular on 500px.
So, when someone needs something "beautiful", instead of something "functional", they have a better chance to find faster what they like on 500px.

500px is not the place for business handshakes, office suits, food shots or tomatoes isolated on white.

You hit the point. This is the licenses they sell indeed most i believe. But in general they they want also to sell the other stuff including Editorial to clients and until now they look very successful in very short time. They mention on a interview that since the 18 months that the marketplace exist they already paid millions to contributors. Also they are very fair.... 70% is a great deal in combination with the sales potential it is worth to upload there. There is just like other here mention still the "watermark problem".

I'm doing travel with mostly landscapes so maybe I should try them out, thanks for suggesting!

How is the review process in there?

I think the success in 500px lays also that they are open for the new. Editorial is RF there. Clients wants easy purchasing without going through all different steps that you need to go on RM. RF is the future. Next to that it seems that a large part of sales are coming from exclusive images.

I always considered 500px more social website - something like deviantART. I have some photos there, but never made anything. Takes a lot of time to breakthrough. When commenting and liking while putting your work online you can easily get to popular but it doesn't seem to convert into revenue.

Here is the official answer related to how important "popularity" is:

It does play some part in it, but so do curations, relevancy, exact matching, etc.. We also have some other secret formulas but I will say that the community affection does play a part but it's only a part and not the entire formula.

I don't comment and almost never "like"

Love the "secret formulas" statement. :)

Yes, I have more sales from the core collection than the prime collection.

They actively communicated for sales some time ago, but didn't propose nothing for us. As a photographer still cannot go with their watermark problem. And really there are not necessary complications for uploads to prime, core etc. At least for time when i was looking at them.

The lack of an optional watermark is the only thing holding me back.  As it is right now they are a go to site for thieves.
