Each site is probably different but most of them got lightboxes and forums. When I joined microstock year ago many people were advising that I should put my images into collection and participate in forums, especially posting images for critique. It seems like worthless to me. What is your experience?

It's so hard to know, although I think you should only put your images in the critique section if you genuinely want them critiqued.

Maybe if you want to raise the profile of your portfolio you could start helping others in the critique section. Or you could start posting tips; or share your own experiences of microstock.

What goes around doesnt always come around, but that's not a reason to not do it!

The best and ultimate way to generate portfolio traffic is to regularly produce high quality work, I suppose. Anything else is pretty much gonna be a touch-up wash.

A good way at StockXpert is to use the Self Promo once a week.
Always seems to generate more views.

I always think that if you put your pictures into the critique section, you are advertising that you do not really know your trade. Not an image you want to project.
Do buyers really look around the forums? Sure, one or two may be the exception to the rule, but surely that's not what the vast majority of buyers are doing.
Getting more exposure to fellow contributors means more exposure to copyists who will rip off your portfolio.
The exposure we want, to the people who count, is much harder.

I have wondered if it would be worth our while to band together as forum members and take out our own advert in a trade magazine. What do you think?

That's what I think too, although I don't know any buyers to support this. :)
