As an ammature illustrator trying to make a couple bucks on the side. I find it quite discouraging to spend a few hours on a file to find it behind over 300 mostly irrelevant, and in some cases much worse files. I understand that I'm not that great and my "ranking" is poor. But, to me the search itself seems pretty broken.

Should I be searching for better niches or something?

Whats that got to do with the Fotolia search?

Can he not better tell us the keyword he used to see if indeed irrelevant results pop up

I suppose there aren't a ton of irrelevant files. But, enough to be irritating. I think I'll just go to work and forget about it. ;)

man, what's wrong with you ? actually it's ranking nr.1 for "Fall Greetings".

why should you ever rank higher for such a short and common keywords as "fall" ? moreover, considering your vector file has nothing related to Fall (season) !

there's no reason you should rank for "fall" at all, the keyword for you is "fall greetings" because it's a greetings card, anything else would be keyword spam.

There's a lot wrong with me ;)

Are you suggesting that I move Fall greetings to the first keyword. I was still under the assumption that multiple keywords didn't work often so I hadn't even tried to search that.

Thank you for that insight, I'd assumed I wasn't getting any traffic due to being so far back on my main keyword. Turns out I just need to illustrate better ;)

Your other images at Fotolia have met success while others will also see download numbers in future. You have 15 images there on FT. It is very small number to arrive any conclusion whether it is working for you. I have 88 with FT and I am fine with the progress. Though it is not very high but it is encouraging.

Look at the categories which are less populated. I am not an illustrator but the common ground using picniche for keyword and subject research has always worked for me.

Am I naive, I downloaded PicNiche and can't really figure it out. Is it just a search tool? on their website it says something about keyword ratings but ... with the toolbar I'm not seeing any ratings or anything really. Just searching agencies really :/

I'm sure I could figure it out if I dug around a bit. But, any tips are appreciated.

Also, thanks for the compliment. I wouldn't say any of my files have had "success" but, really (attempting) illustrating is more of a hobby, I don't really expect to make much, or anything really. But, I like to contribute and practice.

Go to picniche dot com and put your keyword phrase in the box and click analyse. You will get the ratings, number of images and links to agencies where you can find those images.

So, is the toolbar pretty much worthless?

I have not used the toolbar yet. May be there is some utility to it. I use online website.

I suggest you dont waste your time on speculations.
Just produce good files, upload them and sell them and forget the rest.
