Here is a little video clip from BBC telling everyone how easy it is to have a second income from selling photos online. Funny they didn't mention microstock though.. just getty and flickr :)

I was going to post this too but I didn't want to scare any of the pros.

Yeah I saw this too, very misleading. But the BBC are in to making money after all and have countless numbers of misleading and misinformed articles. How can they not mention microstock when talking about selling photos online!!
-
It's more of an ad for that Panasonic camera. Wonder how many free ones they got.
-
Click is just a very short programme that's shown on the BBC news channel. They don't go in to things in depth, I really don't mind that they haven't shown microstock sites. Why not let the amateurs use flickr and hope they get selected by Getty?
-
What a load of cods whallop.

Yup.
"Love to use the photo's you sent, oh dear, wot no model release, pity." ;D
-
Yep, they made it sound pretty easy and also lucrative. Just buy a GF2 and $400 ca-chings will happen for you too.
-
What? I can be a professional photographer and get rich selling photos if I just buy that camera?
Forget illustrations... I'm going to be a rich pro photographer! Yay!
;D
Gotta love how they make it sound so easy but then they include a spot at the end about a real pro who is struggling to make a living anymore in stock.
-
I can't believe the BBC doesn't know about microstock - they are using it themselves on their website.
However, I am glad they didn't mention it.
Let 'em buy (advanced) p&s cameras for the price of a real entry level dSLR, and hope for $250 sales on flickr :)
No need for more competitors here in microstock (not that I am so afraid of tv watching newbies anyway...)
-
ha,easy money??for someone not for me :-\

but she makes it sound as though it's just down to these P&S amateurs !! which will encourage them even further !! No ??

Model release, Property release !! No mention of ISO ! all taken at 1600 no doubt !! ;)
-
LOL!
Great camera commercial! Can't wait to start getting $600 a pop for my snaps. ;D
Why complain they don't mention microstock? Let them direct all these happy snappers to Getty instead.
-
I'm going to buy a $69 microwave oven so I can make $250,000.00 per year as a master chef.
-
It's hit the homepage http://www.bbc.co.uk/ (http://www.bbc.co.uk/)

That's a brilliant idea. Seems like you're also qualified to be a BBC journalist.
-
yes, I have a pencil.

The GF2 is actually better than a real entry level DSLR, and although it may handle and look like a P&S, you need to go to a FF camera is you want any noticeable increase in image quality.
-
yes, I have a pencil.
haha, I've laughed twice in one thread. No more, I've hit my quota.
-
Then I'm also qualified to be a highly paid comedian.

Once you decide on which of these lucrative alternatives to microstock you want, can I have your images?
-
yes, I have a pencil.
Obviously it takes more than that to be a journalist.
You also need a hat like this one (http://shamblesmiller.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/press-hat.jpg). That's what a real journalist looks like with a hat and a pencil.
-
Stuff like this will increase the competition anyway, if they get only one picture in Getty they will be hooked and they will look for other venues as it is very hard to get anything in Getty (even via Flickr ;-)). Than Microstock comes in their mind and there are enough sites which promote it. ;D
And the BBC is not the only one the current title/cover of the biggest amateur photographer magazine in Germany (Fotomagazin) is the "get rich with Microstock in general (and Fotolia in specific)" they brag about a to me unknown german Microstock-star and how much fun it is to make money with your pictures.
Things will get tougher in the future no doubt about it, if everyone with a camera puts just ten pictures in photostockagencies than there is not much left for the one which do this for a living.
And the GF2 is a very very capable camera (I have it myself) and with the pancake it easily beats any APSC-DSLR with a kit-lens.

What a muddled mix of infomercial and about 3 different stories! Leaving aside whether stuff like this hurts or helps us, it was just incoherent as a story.
They could have talked about a new generation of technology trying to provide users with a new way of getting what they want in a photo (although I think it's naive to think that most snapshot takers even know they want a blurred background in their shot).
They could have done a business story about how changing technology and sourcing of photographs has affected photographers and agencies.
They could have done a review of Panasonic's camera, micro 4/3, compared to DSLRs, or some combo.
But they mushed all these into one without really tying them together. They also didn't show whether any of the sold photos were taken with the camera they were profiling. I checked on the boy with a fish image they showed - it was taken with a Nikon Coolpix 8700 in 2006. In the US, the largest size (3264 x 2448) goes for $340, but this may be Getty's pricing games, that means it goes for more in other countries.

'Click' is just a magazine-style program aimed at 'young people'. Their reports aren't intended to be the definitive article on their subject matter, merely a snappy introduction to the latest ideas or products in the digital world.
I think most casual observers would have found the report interesting. The problem here is that we're all 'experts' in microstock, certainly compared to any non-specialist journalist.
If you have significant expertise in any field it is always amazing, when that subject hits the news, how utterly superficial and often plain wrong the newspaper and tv reports that follow are.

Very true!
The BBC does have some programs with great journalism, it just seems like this isn't one of them!

Don't knock it. I want a camera I can hold at arm's length, press the screen and take a picture at the same time and the pic will sell on Getty. Seems Getty standards are way
below different from iStock's.
Woot. Where's my $600 (Why's the Beeb quoting a price in dollars anyway?)
-
^^^ It's the 'international version'. When it was broadcast in the UK the prices were in GBP.
-
What a load of cods whallop.
my new favourite expression....lol. that infomercial could have used the slap chop guy.....would have been way better.
-
My apologies for disagreeing. Unless you'd agree that my Honda Accord is much better than a BMW 5 series?
The sensor measures 18 mm × 13.5 mm (22.5 mm diagonal). Its area is approximately 27–32% less than the APS-C sensors used in other manufacturers' DSLRs, yet is around 9 times larger than the 1/2.5" sensors typically used in compact digital cameras.
Owning one wouldn't convince me either, it's that old problem of light and physics, or maybe that you can't fit 10 pounds of flour in a 7 pound sack? ;D 4/3rds beats any P&S all to heck, but not APS-C available at the same price. And then there's that whole thing about holding value, available lenses, using your old lenses you already own, buying used lenses... GF2 is not the magic solution just because it has a nice sensor and a touch screen interface.
As for the others, I agree, I may want to get a Flickr account so I can upload my amazing photos and make money. Forget about the 90% of people who come there, thinking everything on the internet is free and Flickr is a source for Free Images. (no I won't be using Flickr for my photos!) And I won't hold my breath that Getty will "discover" me and sell my images for $460 anytime soon. ::)
Mostly codswallop in the video.

LOL! I LOVE that guy! He's so good, every time I see that commercial I am tempted to buy that * Slap Chop, and it is the last thing on earth I need - something that chops a tablespoon of whatever ::)
-
The video was motivational. Being a thinker a realised it goes much further. We have voices. Pop stardom? Easy money? We all can sing. I can make a fortune. What about super models? Realistically of course I am the wrong sex and the wrong side of fifty (let us not be delusional) but surely many photographers are wasting their good looks. - $1000's for just standing there.
-
I think they would have done more research in getting to know other photo agencies and directories, well a nice piece all the same.
