How many dollars cost those backgrounds?
They are usually selfmade.
There are a lot of tutorials out there. Many people use old planks from bulky waste collections or they buy cheap shelves with planks at hardwear stores and paint them to appear old. You can also buy paper printed with old wood pattern.

in my country a cardboard like the yellow one could cost more than $2, it's expensive for me due to the low cost for image sell on microstock

I like that he's using natural light from a window. Low cost, nice soft diffused lighting.

Posted board, under a dollar and even if it does cost $2 someplace else, it's a reusable background, small investment compared to all the rest that anyone uses to create stock images?
With all the creatives and open thinking people here, I'm sure anyone can find free or inexpensive backgrounds and accessories, if they try.

Nice useful backgrounds for people to download, and they are flat lays not my angled shots on assorted backgrounds. Even if you sell off most of your equipment, you'll still have a table and a window and props. 8) Just remember to keep whatever you use for the steady overhead camera mount.
Returning this topic to the OP, yes flat lays for backgrounds and topical images, are a good idea and fairly simple if someone wants to try making some. I haven't really. I appreciate the reminder that there are areas worth working at for diversity in my collections.

Well photos shown are made with flash light and softbox, i'm selling most of my equipment , but i will keep with some gears. I need money, that the reason i selling my equipment and you know, microstock doesn't give money as in the past.
I hope the images sell well, the first image i sold it on Istock/Getty for $6.

i just use my softwood floor - (only had to pay the mortgage)

Two of my go to sources are used shipping pallets and remnants from kitchen counter top manufacturers. The pallets you can easily find for free anywhere there’s a loading dock. For a lot of the box stores etc. they’re a pain in the but to get rid of so they’re usually happy to give them away free for the asking. Some are well used with a ready to go rustic patina while others are like new and ready to finish however you like. The same goes for counter top fabricators. There’s always offcuts and broken pieces that they have pay by the pound to dispose of. The pieces are too small to be of any use to them but can be perfect for table top photography. I have some gorgeous marbles, granites and slates that I didn’t pay a nickel for.

Just made a pretty pastel pink background from some old lining paper I had and some cheap children's paint mixed with a little water. Total cost was around $0.70.

A brown and cream checked blanket from a charity shop £3
A broken black roller blind from a bargain basement bin £5
