It would be funnier if it was microstock snapping photographer looking to get 10 cents for photo

When I visited the Masaya Volcano near Managua some years ago, the parking lot on the caldera rim just suddenly ended. no signs, no fencing, etc -- could have driven right into it (part of the parking lot had fallen into the crater )

The day we went to the Grand Canyon a few years ago someone fell in. Our tour guide told us it was so common they barely reported it any more. The guy who fell in wasn't as lucky as the guy who fell into Mt. Vesuvius.

At the Grand Canyon if you hike down to the bottom and can't make it back up, and need a rescue they charge you something like $30,000 - wonder if the Italians do the same?

They are likely to do so. Rescue helicopters are very expensive in service. In some cases a travel insurence will pay, but if these tourists wanted to avoid the 10 entrance fee, they might not be the sort of people who are insured.

That explains why my images of the Vesuvius crater suddenly started selling!

What an idiot.  Gets to Italy but is too cheap to pay the small fee to climb to the top like everyone else?  And some of my countrymen wonder why we have such a bad reputation abroad. Unfortunately he is not eligible for a Darwin award - you have to permanently remove yourself from the gene pool for that - but there is always next time so we can hope.
