If you had a friend who wanted to buy images for say a school project. which site would you send them to buy the pictures at (not taking any referal income into consideration)

Lucky Oliver and StockXpert.

Shutterstock for referral bonuses though.

For A friend for a school project? whichever is cheapest on a per picture basis.

For any other single buyer - FP or LO for high commissions.

For general marketing, SS because most months, that's where the money is.

Featurepics or Mostphotos, because there I can set my own price.

I answered before reading it properly. I thought it meant which would I send someone to, to buy one of my images so I answered DT as I make the most out of it on average. If I was sending a friends to buy images I would send them to the cheapest site, probably FT.

Reasons why I wouldn't send him to certain sites:

Shutterstock - has to buy a full months subscription when he only needs a few photos.
Fotolia - loads slow, the search is weird, and there are a lot of poor quality images.
Dreamstime - no real reason, just prefer StockXpert and Lucky Oliver better.
Istockphoto - disaster of a website.
Bigstockphoto - unattractive website, lot of poor quality images.

and the reason why I picked LO and StockXpert:

StockXpert - high quality images, neat and easy website to use.
Lucky Oliver - the theme and set up is great. the images are decent quality.

Featurepics should have been on the list, and would have been my first choice. I have a big portfolio there, and the earnings per download are much higher.

What kind of images are they looking for? Do they already have models in mind? Honestly, for a school project, if the models and the concepts and everything else is already lined up (so all I have to do is shoot), then I'd do it in exchange for a model release. The good shots, I'd upload to traditional agencies. The mediocre shots, I'd upload to microstock. I'd exchange the images for property/model releases.

For images already in my portfolio, I'd negotiate on my own. Why would I want to send them to competition if I could fulfill the need?

Last resort....doesn't matter in the end. Either, I've already failed to market myself as a photographer or I'm already rolling in the money and don't need the business anyway.

(sorry, I'm being cynical - I'm not in a position currently where I can turn business, or potential business opportunities away).

Featurepics is my first choice. I can set any price and receive 70% commission. I don't understand why we are not promoting them more. Wont we all make more money if they do well? I would like to see links to them all over the place.

StockXpert would be my second choice as I want them to take over from istock as the number 1 site. They have 50% commission for non-exclusive images compared to just 20% with istock and the upload is very straightforward. The site doesn't seem to have the problems I have experienced with istock. The sales are good, considering they are one of the newer sites.

-> still a very good search engine, a lot of good vectors and of course some exclusive content. But the most expensive of the lot.

1. You do not have to subscribe with hunders of dollars, you buy credits that you need, for example 10 credits, for 10$, and you do not have to buy hunderds of images if you dont want.

2. I am selling there, so buy my images. hahahahaha

Featurepics would be my first choice, because I get a better commission from my images and they also pay me for referrals. In my website, everytime I use an image I have in FP, I put a link to it.

I picked StockXpert for my second choice, because prices and commissions are very reasonable. But on a second thought I think I won't get any referral from them, would I? If not, DT would be a second choice.

DT is best for buyers and Sellers because there customer service is not rude like IS and SS

I try to look through the individual artist sites that I have bookmarked when I need photos (yours included). Unfortunately, I don't buy images very often. I'd like to compile a larger list at some point. It's a pet project on the back burner now though.
