Title: How old are you? A poll on the ages of microstockers
Post by: donding on August 10, 2010, 17:54
I've always wondered how old some of the fellow photographers on here are. Some sound quite wise while other sound immature. Just want to get some of an idea if everyone is in the same age group. Thought it would make for a nice subject.

what means amateur and pro?  is there a earnings minimum, or full time is pro? or its our feeling??

I consider pro someone who makes their living off of microstock. This day and age, that is very difficult, but there are ones who do it.

EDIT>>>>>I guess I should say a pro is someone who makes their living off of photography in general not just microstock.

There are only few photographers here who make their living only out of microstock. So, the poll will show mostly amateurs. Maybe it would be better if we say that "pro's" are simply people who live only out of photography business, and amateurs the rest . This way we could see what percent of real photographers we have here.

make it even more simple turn the pro or amateur off :P

once there must be a lot of microstockers that have very nice income and have another job..

BTW, the poll is a great idea. I was asking myself the same question for some time already. How many amateurs and pros we have here, and what age.

I've wondered this for a long time. It's really kinda interesting looking at the poll as it stands right now.

I voted. Using my definition of amateur as someone who does photography for fun or a hobby and doesn't care if they get paid or not, and most times they do not sell their photos. A professional makes money from selling their photos whether full or part-time and reports such income on their income taxes, like a business.

The Pro / amateur question could be a whole never ending debate on it's own.  :)

I put down amateur based on income from photography vs total income from all sources. As far as hours worked, I spend more time taking pictures / editing, than anything else. I spend more on equipment and expenses to earn that income, than anything else. I shoot "professionally" contract, on spec., for print publications, news sources, and websites. (and sell stock of course) So which am I?

Maybe we can have a survey with the question, what makes someone a professional? Income, expense or working?  :P

According to my accountant, reporting to the IRS, it's "hobby income". If it's good enough for Uncle Sam, it's fine with me.

50+ Pro

100% of my business is nature stock of which 90% is RM and 10% RF (of which 50% is microstock).

We'll see if I can stay in business long enough to reach the next age bracket in your poll.....

Yep, it is generally attributed to Twain;

"To cease smoking is the easiest thing I ever did.  I ought to know because I've done it a thousand times."  ~Mark Twain, attributed

Funny - if I was asked to pick someone round here who I was convinced to be a non-smoker, it would have been you. No idea why! Interesting how we put a picture of someone together on not much of a ground at all...

I'm in the 30+ group, and I'm in Berlin, Germany. I grew up there, but my parents are British. I wouldn't see myself as a pro, but for perculiar and complicated reasons, all my income is from microstock. But - for perculiar ad complicated reasons - my cost of living is really low.

And I've given up giving up

Germany isn't really that expensive - but then again I don't really have much to compare it with. My rent is low because I've been in the same flat all my adult life, no kids, no car, no cell phone... health insurance is quite reasonable because of my status as a small business (in the first year). It's really not that bad for me. I'm well above the amount a single person can get as social security money off the state. Also, my partner is a head chef - I do get some lovely freebie evening meals brought home for me.  :D

Cool, the Flemish Lion finally has some brand value. FlemishDreams (http://flemishdreams.com) was intended 5 years ago as a political site but I ended up in Asia shooting pictures (and more), just like Brits end up in Berlin. The domain had 250 daily visits so I thought I'd rather put up some photography talk there.
I imagined you to be a completely different "type"!
Yes it's always like that. I know long hair is 70-tish.
Nice sneakers.  ;)
Nah, cheap chinese copies from the "market". 2 euro max. The same famous market (it's on a blog I'm preparing) where Windows 7, CS4 and all movies by the dozen are 90cents. I think I'm the only one islands around that has a legal Windows.

FD,
Hahaha!
Yes, I believe it's a Mark Twain quote. The one about smoking :)
And I love Woody Allen's as well.
My favourite (top of my head)  Woody Allen.
'I can't listen to that much Wagner. I get the urge to go conquer Poland!'
Hahahahaha!
This is a nice one as well. 'Eternity is a very long time. Especially at the end' :)
Relating this to the Universe life time, he's not only funny, but actually right.

Pheby,
I've been smoking for over 20 years. I can't even imagine my life without cigarettes. And speaking about smoking and expensive countries, have a look at Irish prices :

1 pack 20 'Silk Cut' (the brand I smoke) = 8.50 euro in Dublin, Ireland.
A FORTUNE!
How many 0.25 cent downloads would that be? :)
No point in counting, I can't give them up anyways :)

Yeah, I know, I'm in London quite often where the prices are similar. Needless to say I never fail to take as much supply I'm allowed (they are about half that in Germany). Since the prices have been rising that high, people have stopped offering other smokers a cigarette, and if you smoke in the street you're asked for a "spare fag" all the time. Whatever a spare fag is...

Jolly good old chap. I dig it.  ;)

When you meet an Australian he says "hi mite" and and American always asks "what's up?". I always found that a very indiscreet question, especially when wearing loose pants.
Mixing up slangs by non-native speakers (like me) can sometimes be embarrassing. I remember during part of my PhD working in a Silicon Valley joint and at a (rather informal) meeting I exclaimed "bullsh@t!". Everybody turned pale. I just assumed that it was a normal expression to express doubt since the word is commonly used in American movies.

In the Philippines, American B action movies are wildly popular and also rapper music clips. They assume that expressions like "f@ck, (piece of) sh@t, give it to me man, what's your problem man" are common and accepted in American daily life.  ::) Funny are also accents. Filipinos can't pronounce K, they pronounce it like G. Most people (on markets etc...) use often the phrase "It's OK" but it sounds like "it's so gay".  ;D

Anyways, God really hates smokers:

@FD

"Jolly good old girl", please ;)

Posters like that make my blood run cold.  Not only because generalising a whole group of people and condemning them as one invariably leads to terrible things, but also because it's scary that anyone who professes to believe in 'God' (whatever they conceive that to be) presumes to the know the mind of God.  I find that a terrifying personality trait.

Sorry... I know you were being lighthearted, but I had to say that, as I have this built-in response button  ;)

On a lighter note (phew!)... Yeah those speech differences can be dangerous, and funny.  I once had my jaw drop to the floor when I heard an American woman on TV talking of how she was exercising to get a 'nice round fanny'.  It was a long time before I learned that 'fanny' in the US meant the rear end.  In the UK it means... errr... how can I put this delicately....  the 'front end'...

BullSh@t is used quite often in the states. It does sorta mean doubt, but more so as a challenge. Some people use it to express disbelief. Some people use it as calling someone on a lie. It has various uses... ;)

My country is very small, but variety of language, music and everything else is so emphasized that people from north almost can't understand people from south-east parts of the country. Even accent between my city and Belgrade, which is less than 100 miles on the north, is so different that they laugh when they hear us talk.
Terms used to describe something are also different sometimes, not to mention phrases used in everyday life. For instance, in my city, when someone wants to make a shortcut to get somewhere earlier he will say something like: "Let's kill a shortcut". I remember when I said once: "Let's kill a shortcut" when I was in Belgrade. They were shocked for a moment, and then one of my friends asked me: "...kill who??" :D

I'm 24, I consider going full time with microstock quite a bit. Trying to make it my actual career, however since it can be quite a rollercoaster I am a bit hesitant. I worry how many years will this last, and if my income will continue to grow. But for now it is a big part of my income and I plan to stick with it as long as possible.

While I was looking at the shots from London iStockalypse I was shocked how old these ppl mostly are. I was expecting most of them to be in their 30s, some in their 40s and a handful in their 20s (due to high costs) and 50s. The reason why I expected ppl to be younger is not only there are virtually no photographers older than 50, since the boom of digital photography (the number of 50+ togs is probably the same, it just that so many younger ppl started doing it in the last 5-7 years) and also because you need more than just basic computer skills, which this group age usually lacks. The other reason was also that all the stars of MS were in their 30s (Yuri, Lise, not sure about Sean, but he can't be much over 40)

You have to remember that the big pioneers in computing have been the hippy generation (Bill Gates; Steve Jobs etc).  One of my siblings is pushing 60 and did his Masters in Computer Science (having been in Fine Arts most of his life) in his 30s, and has been teaching younger generations ever since.

Personally I would say it's more the 70+ age group that has been slower to access technology, and I spent a considerable time, ten years ago, teaching people in that age group computing skills for free.  Sometimes having to provide special devices for people with badly arthritic hands etc.

My own findings were that, ultimately, people of any age are driven to learn by what they want to do.  If they want it enough and have a good reason to learn, they will pursue it.  If the enthusiasm/need/desire isn't there, there's only so much a teacher can do.  Of course, most of the pioneering generation in computing had no-one to teach them very much, they just jumped in and figured things out/invented by themselves.  Amazing really.

ETA:  The other thing, about older photographers, is that these are people who really learned their stuff to the nth degree with film cameras.  I think that the advent of digital has made it a 'given' that many older photographers will have already (or will in the future) switch to or include digital in their work, unless they have a strong personal bias against it.  Having said that, I have another sibling who is only just in his 50's - a Fine Arts photographer with a photography degree.  In every sense, he seems more like a person in his 30's or early 40's but he is dead-set against digital photography.  Just won't venture into it, and is glued to his film-based Rolleiflex.  For him it's a question of the beauty of the device and the process, and he finds digital lacking and ugly and less creative.  So I don't think age is always a useful measurement of what a person will or can do.

Just my several tuppences  ;)

You've never been to a UK camera club, then.
My perception is that there are very few younger togs, since all 'kids' want to do is take pics with their phone cams.
Just as bad a generalisaton.

That's an excellent point.  I just read that out to my partner, as he is a member of a camera club.  He's in his early 40's and says he's very much in the younger group there, with the vast majority being late 50's and over-60's.  Out of 150 or so members, only two or three still use film cameras.

Lol Liz, chill ;) . I wasn't making fun of your generation, neither saying there's anything wrong with it. Just really, really surprising and I also explained why. Sure, there are cultural differences (obviously!), but looking at all the web galleries, fb pages and photo sites, even the biggest one such as photo.net, most togs, well at least those that I follow, because they amaze me with the quality and originality of their photos are below 50. And it's really the same thing, area, it's comparable to MS. The oldest microstocker I know personally is also around 50 and I know dozens. It's the same thing when I attend Nikon/Canon etc days of photography (lectures, seminars, model shoots), out of over 500 ppl that usually attend these events, there's a handful of ppl over 50, usually just as guests of honor or CEOs.

Oh well, this 56 year old has never been at a Nikon/Canon day. Mostly because they're too far away. Anything photographic hereabouts the age is skewed to well over 50, I'm the second youngest member of my camera club at 56. The ages were more mixed on my photojournalism course, but most of the younger people dropped out around weeks 3/4. My perception of young people shooting on phonecams or tablet computers is because that's what I see all the time. However, in Florence, I saw quite a few mid - older people shooting dSLRs. I suspect most of them were iStockers, as there have been 600 pics with Florence as a keyword accepted on iStock since 1st November!

Ah, two more thoughts:
"At least those I follow because they amaze me ..." is like saying "Most older people don't like xyz music and most younger people don't like abc music", which may be true, but it wouldn't follow that 'most old/young people don't like music'.
Also, 'amazing originality' of photos doesn't generally equate with what sells well on microstock.
Like when some of my camera club colleagues observed that most of the high sellers on micros wouldn't do well in club competitions, and I had to point out that the vice is versa, i.e. even international salon prize winners may get next to no sales from micro.
Different strokes.

I attended a camera club for a short time and there was only one younger person there, and she was there because her parents were there. I simply wanted to say, while the average age of MS contributors and togs that UL to web galleries should be about the same, there might be some bias from my perspective, because I just might be following more of the younger ppl, because I like their style, or come to think about it, I'd say subjects more, because I'm only interested in ppl shots. The logic behind that is simple, a younger person will get a model (posing for free) a lot easier, because he/she knows a lot of ppl of his/her age or ppl that are just 5-10 years younger or so. It's also a lot easier for someone who's 25-35 to approach a beautiful girl (usually aged 18-25) and ask her if she's interested in a photoshoot. I never had a problem with that, every single one except one was interested, I really doubt someone who's my father's age would have nearly as much success, if any at all. Most girls would get scared off, thinking he's just an old perv or something (and I know you might not agree, but that's the way young women usually think). I'm mean unless he's a well known tog or he has a really finely tuned, sophisticated approach, can explain to her in a relaxed manner what he wants from her, gives her a card shows his all around professionalism etc etc. But yeah, that applies to me as well, but it wouldn't lower my success rate by as much as for someone who's 50, 60 or even older. It's so much harder to make them comfortable, relaxed. It's also a lot harder for then to connect with younger ppl, to keep conversation interesting for her, relaxed, make jokes. It's just so easy for me, it's the same generation, we have the same kind of jokes (sarcasm, dark humour, I can even get away with some profanity lol, imagine a 50 year old pulling stunts like that, she'd leave in a heart beat), the same interests etc. I mean older ppl, in some cases can't even have a complete conversation with younger folks, they don't know the slang, don't share the same interests (they don't party, are not into modern music etc). OTOH it's harder for me to work with older ppl, unless I know that very well, I have to really watch out what and when I say, easy on the sarcasm, dark humour etc (so I have to forget about 75% of my humorous remarks). It's so easy to misunderstand each other, it's usually that huge a gap between generations. It's just been proven in this thread. I'm sure some were offended by what I wrote, even though I wasn't offensive. I just spoke my mind and wrote the opinion on how young women think and react in some cases. Since I've shot way over 50 women (in the last 7 years or so), I think I know a thing or two ;)

I've met at least 20 microstockers over the years. Typically I'm one of the youngest at the gatherings and I'm 47.  LOL

It's not difficult at all to find younger people to model.  Older photogs can find plenty of models at places like Model Mayhem (young models contact me all the time, because they like my style) and within their own families, who come equipped with a circle of friends.  Many of my young models have become wonderful friends, despite the age gap, and have sought me out for more shoots over younger photogs, because we have so much fun and they trust me.

I remember one model whose father passed away a couple nights before, and he told me he wouldn't want to be shooting with anyone else on that day, because his father's all-time favorite portrait of his son was one I shot with him.  That day, my maturity meant everything (did I just use that word?  Maturity?  ;) ), because there were times when he simply needed a break to cry.  Are young photogs able to deal with a situation like that?  He needed his photog to be more like a mom than a buddy that day, and I was there for him.  He ended up asking if I could shoot his father's funeral, which I wasn't able to do, so he then asked a mutual friend, who is a 65-year-old photog well-known at Shutterstock.

And just where is that Katrina Brown photo of Laurin Rinder, Dave Smith and Bobby Deal playing bongos in the buff?  All of whom are microstock photogs over 50?

I'm with you, RapidEye.  I'm 57, and I was pleased to discover early in my studio work that I have pretty wonderful rapport with models of all ages.  In one of my recent shoots I told the model that a shot was terrible, and then kept telling her what she was doing was wrong and that she should stop.  The more I did it, the more I got mock outraged, the more she laughed and the more animated her expressions.  The pictures were fun, and she told me she liked shooting with me.  I of course felt the same way.

Truly, 50 is setting the bar pretty young. I did comp sci on a Univac mainframe, moved on to CP/M personal machines, jumped to the Apple II, did some coding on Commodore PETs and VIC 20s, then on to the first IBM PC clones, then to Macs, then to Amigas, then back to PCs and Macs and so on and so on. All this time I've been hammering the audio and imaging capabilities of those machines. So I feel a little devalued and despised if some kid thinks I'm an old man who can't possibly know anything useful.

An acquaintance of mine must be well over 60 now and he's produced a couple of impressive bits of tech in the past 20-odd years. Very few of my ageing friends need to take their computers to the shop if something goes wrong with them. Your stereotype has no legs in my world.

Don't let it get to you RapidEye.  You know what you know, and we were all young enough to throw around wild assumptions at some point.  As my Mum used to say "I've BEEN your age, but you haven't been mine yet".

There's also an old saying that "Every generation thinks they invented sex".  So true.

Just as another point of interest.  At university in the early 90's, our programming lecturer and head of programming was a retired engineer of about 62.   Our computer graphics lecturer was in his mid-50's.  So these guys are 80+ and 70+ respectively now.

being older has its advantages. I was asked to photograph a pole dancer teacher. I think she felt safer with someone as "old" as me. Anyway communication with models is probably easier as you get older.

I don't think there's right or wrong, just the circles, surroundings you're in. Examples you're naming surely exist where I live, but are rare. It seems like it can be easily the other way around, where ppl in the 60s and 70s have no problem with modern tech what so ever and some of you even make us in the 30s look bad (you being computer wizzards etc). I'm not that flexible either, I usually don't connect with older ppl, I don't have that ability.

It's not a generation gap, it's an interest gap.
For example, I have no real, personal interest in looking at studio photos. If I do, it's purely academic ('what are people doing in studios nowadays?'). Therefore you and I would have little in common.
I enjoy looking at people photos but only if they're real or 'almost real', i.e. candid or at least semi-candid.
However, I get on fine with people of all ages who are interested in natural history, live or in photos.
We'd have nothing in common, but it's not a generation gap; and it doesn't make you or me a bad person.

True, true, and there's me harrumphing like an old curmudgeon. Must be the scotch. Though actually I am starting to feel the need to defend older people against the wrong assumptions of the youth. It's a cultural investment in a possibly less exploited and despised old age.

The cultural investment is an excellent idea.  There are many MANY younger people who are very open and interested in the experience and knowledge of older people, and who see each individual as a person with a story, rather than an 'age' - which, of course is a far more accurate way to view people.  I do worry that we've all been so 'bracketed' and brainwashed by marketing people that we forget this.

My partner learned to program at the age of 11 from his uncle, who was an inventor and electronics guy in his 50's then (back in 1980).  He always had the utmost respect and love for him, and knows very well that he would not have had the successful career he has if it hadn't been for him.   These days, he doesn't think of him as 'an old guy'.  He's just his brilliant uncle.

Sue's comments on 'interest gap' are very smart, I think.

OK I'm going to ask you this way: if you get to know new ppl, for instance at a photo workshop or on vacations, who do you usually get to know or get to know best? I guess it's someone your own age. Who are you more likely to start a conversation with, waiting in a queue or something, a lady your age or some 19 year old girl?

That being said, of course it makes no one a bad person, I was saying this all along ;) . I know some things were misunderstood, but that always happens with a larger group of ppl. Well at least if you're not trying to say what everybody wants to hear all the time and try very hard to get on the good side of everyone. But being so fake, really doesn't help anyone in this forum (or any other), the point is the exchange of opinions, different or not.

And it's nice to hear seniors/mature togs get so great along with shooting (young) models. I tried it with older ppl once (besides my grandparents), when I was assisting a stock videographer and I was able to grab some shots of a couple in their late 60s/early 70s and their "grandkids". Didn't go to well as well, although they did some modeling before, they really could make the expressions I wanted, then I asked him to give his 4 year old skinny grandson a piggyback ride, he couldn't because of his bad back etc. I know I could make good shoots if I'd taken into account all the limitations, which I didn't (because I didn't really have a shoot and never really worked on a shoot with seniors), so I got back home empty handed. Luckily, seniors are so over supplied lately, you can't sell much, it's not an under-suplied segment, like it was years ago. These last 2 years everybody has been shooting seniors regularly, I know quite a few diamonds, photo&video. And it's always the same, seniors at a seminar, seniors with grandkids, seniors with smart phones/tablets etc. Oh no wait, I did make a few great shots with a woman in her 70s! I almost forgot that. She has some kind of mental illness, can't talk clearly etc, she's totally messed up, but very interesting at the same time and she could come up with a couple of interesting face expressions (knowingly or not, I'm not sure, but it came out great and I only made a dozen shots or so). I forgot to add, a friend of mine knows her, she from the block he works at and is always around, everybody knows her etc. I didn't harass her or anything (take "advantage" of her - it looks like I have to watch what I'm saying here, there was a long debate over rape in one of the threads:)

BTW, I think some of you're exaggerating. You're naming exceptions as what an average 60 or 70 year old can do and does do. It's like saying 70 year olds run the marathon. Sure they do, but it's 1 out of 100k, not 1 of 100 like someone aged 30. It's not really like that with computer skills etc, but still the ratio between 30 and 70 year old ppl for which using the computer really is second nature is more 10:1 if not 30+:1. This msg board might be an exception, but usually the average age is somewhere between 20-40 on various web sites (forums, web galleries), not to mention social newtworks etc. And why do you think they say traditional newspapers will die with the old generation? ;)

At the photojournalism course, the first person I chatted to, and the only one I've kept in touch with, was a young woman in her 20s.
It would depend on the queue, no doubt, but at the Fringe or some event, I just chat to whoever's near me in the queue - because it's a common interest.
I do admit, if I'm driving and get lost, I tend to look for a woman to ask for directions. Age not so relevant.

Facebook I can see some vague point of, but I'd rather use old fashioned websites and email.
Even blogs, I'm not wild on, as I don't like their back-to-front nature. However I'm definitely a 'bricks up' learner: so that's not an age thing, it's a learning-style-preference thing.

Funny you would mention that.  My dad is one of those 1 out of 100,000.   ;D  He turns 80 next month and continues to win national championships in his age group at different distances, including the half marathon.  Proud of my daddy!

How odd that you think that. I'm 50 but possibly have arrested development because I try to keep things absurdist and hilarious with my models, younger or older, and they keep coming back. I don't exactly watch my mouth either and nobody heads for the hills.

I'm 46, have models from early teens to over 80 and manage to get along great with all of them.  Having a child of my own helped me relate to kids and teens.

Wrong again.
I said I was the second youngest in my camera club. (And I can talk easily to the lady member who's almost ninety, and the men in their mid-eighties, which are bigger age gaps than between you and me, and the younger guy (late thirties, maybe?). but that's the common interest thing. There are people the same age as me with whom I have nothing in common and I can't even make small talk with them.
The ages were very mixed at the pj course, I was probably the oldest or second oldest;

Yeah, I guess if I was younger, I'd be under some sort of peer pressure to use it, as probably my pals would use it.
But I can say, I don't like circuses, never have, because they're boring (to me). And nowadays I know the way circus animals are treated, I didn't know that when I was younger. But I did find my pupils (11-18) were equally horrified when I told them and showed them videos and other evidence.

You see, now we're getting there ;) . That being said it looks like a loosing battle for me, since no one seems to be younger than 45 in this thread. And you being selective about your experiences, sharing only the one suiting the "most of us are seniors" theory ;)

There would only be advantages inasmuch as it seems that many young people use it, so if I wanted to keep up with people, I'd likely have to use it.

@ Wut - I don't think anyone's 'exaggerating' as you put it.  They're simply telling you their experience of people and themselves, which is different to your experience and assumptions.

I'm very curious to know if or how you got a model release from someone who sounds as though she may not have the legally-required mental capacity to sign one.

I don't 'get' the hold Twitter has on people either, btw.  I might look at it occasionally if I'm curious about something (I looked at it over Christmas when George Michael came out of hospital, because I was curious to know how he was doing after his recent illness and I use it when MSG or an agency site goes down to see if there are any updates on the situation).  But in general I simply don't have time for it.  I think one of the things that DOES change as we get older is our priorities and our understanding of ourselves and who we are/what really matters to us.  For each of us that will be different.  One of my older brothers LOVES Twitter and Facebook and uses them professionally on a big scale.  He's always nagging me to sign up (as are other friends of my age), but I just really have too much else I'd rather be doing.   I tend to use the tools that are most useful to me and serve a purpose in what I truly want to do.  I can use Twitter or FB if I WANT to, but no amount of sibling-pressure or peer-pressure is going to make me feel that I HAVE to, or that there's anything wrong with not wishing to.

You know, it's funny.  I used to feel exactly this way.  When I was younger, particularly in my 20s, and into my 30s, I felt uncomfortable around elderly people.  Not that I had anything against them, just that I didn't "get" them.

I guess when I hit my 40s I made a realization about myself - even though I look older and I have some back and knee issues which age me, I am still the same person I was when I was young.  On the inside I feel really young - sometimes like a teenager or a 20 something.

Realizing that I am just a young person in an older body made me understand this is the way most people feel, regardless of their age.  Now I have a number of good friends who are senior citizens.  If you talk to them like they are young, they almost magically transform before your eyes and you can see the younger version of them very clearly.

For example, I have a good friend who is 74.  He has some back problems, so he moves slowly, and looks like an old man.  But this guy is the coolest!  He and his partner used to hang out in the clubs in Greenwich Village in the 60s!   He and I have the exact same sense of humor (sarcastic and off-color) even though he is 30 years older than I am.  I tell him all the time that of the two of us, he's younger.

For most people, age is less a state of mind than a state of body.  Inside we all think we're young.

Oh, on the twitter and facebook thing, my 20 year old is on facebook but rarely wastes time using it.  She has no desire whatsoever to use twitter.  I can't stand facebook, but I'm coming around on Twitter.  It has some useful purposes, like leaving comments for companies you do business with, etc.  Or publicly posting pics of your junk, if you are a congressman in his late 40s ;D

Yes, I was saying the same thing in a couple of my posts. But then I broadened the debate from computer skills to other area, and came to that conclusion. Think about it, wether it's computer skills, or some other "new age" thing the generation of seniors wasn't a part of for the majority of their life, if ppl of all ages would take a poll, which age group would get on top (get higher percentage) in computer skills? That's all I meant ;) . Of course such a poll should be taken all over the world by a large number of ppl.

I'm sorry for my English, my vocabulary is so poor, that I'm forced to express myself in a very basic way, using basic words. Because of that, my IQ appears to be lower by at least 20%, not to mention my horizon (I'm not actually sure about this expression, think of the opposite of ignorant) appears to be a lot narrower, than it really is...

As far as MR goes. It's not that she isn't sane. She's a pensioner working as a cleaning lady as well and she's during it during working hours and has no problem interacting with the customers at time. It's just they don't understand most of what she's saying unless they know her relatively well. She obviously agreed to being photographed, but I didn't ask her for release, I just wanted to take a few shots for my private archive, I love shooting portraits. I did upload a few at IS as editorial though (no MR needed).

I'm going to try that trick of yours next time I'll have a session with a 50+ year old ;) . I'm not sure, most are that way (old body, young mind), for instance I can joke with my mum more or less the same way as with ppl my age, of course because of the nature of our relationship I leave some things out. But there's lots of dark humour, sarcasm, even poky humour. Which she gets and laughs so hard she's crying at the same time. It's the same thing with her husband. However, it's not with my dad, he just doesn't get lots of this jokes, so I don't use humour with him that often (just some sarcastic remark from time to time, you know you have to tease your parents from time to time, that's what children are for, to raise your blood pressure - or just make you laugh).

It's funny you mentioned that congressman. That is one huge cultural gap (a lot bigger than the age gap we're talking about). Berlusconi is the man, or better said, was for a very long time, because of all those sex scandals. He was considered a macho, masculine. Showing your junk and even worse, not really showing it, since he was wearing boxers, wouldn't even raise an eyebrow in many parts of the world. It's the same thing over and over in the US, everytime some presidential candidate gets ahead, he gets burned with some sexual allegations (like Cain). It's just so easy to ruin someone politically over there - you just pay a witness to falsely testify, or just getting it to the press does the trick. All that being said, Berlusconi is a clown ;D . He should host a talk show, or work somewhere in the entertainment industry (not as a CEO that he is for decades) not lead a country IMO. OK, now we're way off topic, I just thought the comparison was interesting ;)

ETA: just to draw you the clown picture, since some won't understand why I'd say that. One of many stunts he pulled :D Silvio Berlusconi humping on police woman (REAL FOOTAGE) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XSBr7nPlWE#)

I guess when I hit my 40s I made a realization about myself - even though I look older and I have some back and knee issues which age me, I am still the same person I was when I was young.  On the inside I feel really young - sometimes like a teenager or a 20 something.
...
For most people, age is less a state of mind than a state of body.  Inside we all think we're young.

I've said on here before and no doubt will again, one of the most interesting insights was an interview I read with the actress Gina McKee. When almost totally unknown she landed a lead role in a heavy UK drama, which followed her, and the other three main characters, between 1964 and 1995, so her character had to age 31 years during the series.
In the interview, she said she'd spoken to a lot of people about how to approach this, and about insights to ageing, and her conclusion was that as we get older, we don't change much, but other people's perception of us changes, and thus the way they react to us and the way we therefore react to them. Kinda like in France when you go from Mademoiselle to Madame, even if still single.

Ah!  Thanks for explaining re the MR.  I am close to someone who lost mental capacity and it's made me feel very protective towards people with such vulnerabilities, so I had to ask.

IIRC (and correct me if I'm wrong), when you initially expressed your 'shock' regarding IT abilities in over-50's, you were referring to attendees at an iStockalypse.  Given that you referred to a group of microstockers, and that you raised this amongst fellow microstockers, it seems appropriate to me that we would refer to ourselves and the people in our own circles and histories in order to help you feel less shocked. ;)

No doubt, in the world at large, you would get a different picture than from people who already make money using digital cameras, post-production software, back-up systems, FTP software etc.  I think though that the very fact that we see in this thread active participation from people in their 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s, that it's not necessarily an 'age thing'.   We are also people who have been privileged to be able to afford the technology required, to be aware of it's existence, to have sufficient good health to pursue the activity and perhaps also to have been around the sorts of people who have supported and encouraged us to take the initial leap of faith.   Not everyone is so fortunate, and for many people their choices diminish as they get older for all sorts of reasons.

Lisa and Sue are right about older people often being young people inside, btw.  Ultimately, we're all just people - each as simple and complex as the next.

It's a reflection of your great expertise with English that I had no idea it was not your first language.  I will take that into consideration in future posts, as you may be coming across at times as a little more harsh than you really intend to.

Me2. I thought you (Wut) were a native English speaker until you wrote that. I'm always impressed with anyone who can speak/write a second (or more) language fluently. Even fluent-enough-to-be-understood is impressive to me.

I can definitely understand you asking, even though you hadn't had such a relationship. I actually despise ppl who'd take advantage of such ppl (as well as children etc).

Indeed it is appropriate of you, but it was stretched to the whole generation right after that lypse post of mine (ppl saying I know a 120 year old programmer etc, just kidding but I think it was 70 or so;)

But still, it's impressive. As you say, ppl are different, I know many of that age who don't want to have anything to do with all that new tech. My father is such a person, but he's retired for over 10 years, yo he really never had to use a computer, but still he has no wish to start using it now. He always calls me to set up his TV etc, everything that is electronic. My uncle is even worse, can't use the ATM, even though he hates standing in line at the bank. That being said, they're both very intelligent, so they are not mentally limited to learn those things etc (not saying because it's my family, but because it simply is true)

Tnx for your compliment on my English. I really appreciate it. If you'd hear me actually talking, that would be another story. My accent/pronunciation is horrible, you'd immediately hear it's something wrong with my R pronunciation (saying something you're the most beautiful girl in the world is hard). I'd probably do best if I'd pronounce those words like Scots, they are saying it with those hard Rs. The pronunciation is probably as hard for me as it is for most of you to speak Spanish (I can't speak Spanish, but it's always so horrible to listen to English native speakers speak Spanish - unless they're fluent of course). Indeed, I probably am coming across a bit more harsh than I intend to. In fact I'm trying to tone down over here (and on most big forums where Ppl don't know me), since it's really easy to be misunderstood - and I don't want to fight because something doesn't read as I intend to. In real life, on FB, I'm honest, direct, sometimes blunt and I'd probably get flagged as offensive by some Pol (dark humour, sarcasm and making fun of ppl or some types of ppl - let's say in some cases Al Bundy style:). When ppl get to know me, then I really speak my mind using the words I'd really want to use :)

Micro,  would not survive without the younger generation!  they are easily sucked into this cogwheel, promises of great fortunes and overnight success, etc. They are kind of more gullible then the older.
I bet, if you look at the thousands of newcomers to this industry, some 90%, would be in their twenties.
Good thing actually!  stoppes them from hanging around, doing nothing. :)

And why do you think they say traditional newspapers will die with the old generation? ;)

Funny you would mention that.  My dad is one of those 1 out of 100,000.   ;D  He turns 80 next month and continues to win national championships in his age group at different distances, including the half marathon.  Proud of my daddy!

Many congratulations to your Dad. Incredible achievement.

I was thinking also of a group of senior runners (all over 60) I've seen in the Glasgow marathon called Sikhs in the City. I thought they were local to the Glasgow area, but it seems they are a multi-age, multi-faith group, founded in England, in honour of a 93-y-o marathon runner, Fauja Singh.

Something that both the elderly and the very young (teenagers or a little younger) have in common, they don't want to be dismissed. Often these 2 groups want to have a say and be heard, but the other age groups may say to them that they are too old too understand or too young to know. I really like talking to young people and I like listening to what they say, I often feel that I'm not really different and can have a laugh and a joke with them. I also like meeting elderly people who have retained their youth. We're all going to age physically, for sure we will gain knowledge with every year that goes by, but that knowledge should consistently come from all age groups. The elderly people I really admire are those who retain their youthful spark and endeavour to keep learning, rather than thinking I'm automatically right or know more due to the number of years I have.

Truly said. When i was young my grand father was (and still now) my best friend. One thing what i feel that senior people do have a nature of giving their knowledge to others specially guys younger to them. They want us to listen spreading their knowledge meanwhile. They do deserve our love.

I thought the one advantage of getting old is you do not have to run. When I see them running and older than me I am not sure whether to trip them or applaud. Oh well least I still have hair. Nice if your parents are fit into old age, you can live in the belief it is genetics.

Yeah I always try to be myself and I enjoy threads like this, that turn from nothing (not really nothing, but you know, just a poll type of thread) into an interesting, in-depth, at times also philosophical debate. I enjoyed it so much last time, I couldn't convience myself to go to sleep although it was way past my "bed time". So I guess you were (all) right about the age thing, we had a great discussion and the age gap didn't matter (wether it was just over 10 years or over 40). I guess it's a bit different for me in real life, because you actually see the person in front of you and you have a different perspective on it (like you also said if I remeber correctly). That being said, it was more of a serious subject this, if it was something more of a usual everyday thing that we "youngsters" do (I don't really consider myself being young in early 30s, at least not compared to those under 21 or so, really different points of view and perception of life, to some degree different values etc) and talk about, then I guess we wouldn't connect as well (not saying we wouldn't at all), to be honest. And it's the other way around, of course ;)

It soooooo isn't.
The older you get, the shorter every year seems.
Probably because when you're ten, a year is 10% of your life; when you're 50, a year is 2% of your life, so it 'seems' that much shorter.
