Here's a rather depthy question -

Image categories. Is there a sort of "standard" set, or does each agency arbitrarily make them up? For instance, maybe its established according to exif?

If there is a standard in image categorization, I'd love a link or two. If its just a wing-it deal, let me know.

This of course is for the Self-hosting package I'm creating for the microstock community.

And one more question -

Are photographers in the habit of categorizing in the meta info along with keywords?

If so, I'll set up a process to extract them :D.

each agency has their own system of categories - highly subjective and of questionable value -- mostly it's just a time waster when submitting

i dont know of any agency that reads categories from meta data

Glad to hear some insight. I'll simply keep it optional then.

Some suggest them based on the keywords in the image.

I thought I might include them strictly for SEO reasons, and maybe navigation help. Suggesting based on keywords is cool, but that would be a *huge* project.

Will your project be free-to-download or paid?

I've been struggling with that question for a very long time. Its a masterpiece. I want it to be free with some other way to profit on it. Maybe upgrades for styling or such.

Suggestions?

BS does that and its far from correct most of the time

yep, on of their worst is any time the keywords contain 'woman' they suggest the category 'sexy/women'

eg:
desc: ORISSA INDIA - NOV 11 - Young tribal girl cares for her baby sister on Nov 11 2009 in Orissa India...
tags: child, kid, mother, india, old, women, people, orissa, tribal, ethnic, woman, village, rural, baby

this is both insulting and inaccurate, but it still happens after multiple reports over more than a year; problem is if you dont check every assigned category, you dont know what's being submitted for you

I think the insulting part is just the reality that those suggestions are based on human search patterns, ie, thats how people view females and the system is just giving an unbiased result based on search statistics.

Or maybe its not that sophisticated.

...but on a less philosophical note some nicely chosen categories will at least help in forming collections/sets, seo, and some breadcrumbs in navigation. I'll leave it up to the user.

Hi Leo, I know it is an old thread, but just to add an info/knowledge.

The category filed within IPTC they tried to create a default/standard categories, but it didn't work where I know. So, the Category field [IPTC IIM]
was deprecated (removed from use) when IPTC Core 1.0 was released in 2005, although it may appear in some applications supporting IPTC IIM.

Here is a list of old "Default" categories. I don't know how is it now a days.See the links below:

Guideline for mapping Category Codes (IPTC)
