Is that the older chap who also has a music label and had around 550575 posts on the old Shutterstock forum?

Was wondering his whereabouts too.

No he didn't own a music label. He made up half of what he claimed and the other half was half truths. True he posted over 50,000 good tips and advice replies on the SS help forum. He reviewed for Bigstock for a couple of years.

Nice videos. I was avoiding commenting, because of how people take sides on his past and posts. Looks like the newest video is 9 years old.

When I have some extra time, I think I'm going to enjoy watching the Dave and Rinder show.  ;D

Maybe he finally did quit forums? He left and came back so many times, it became a joke.

Maybe he finally did quit forums?

Unlikely, since he didn't post an essay here about it and how his invaluable knowledge will be lost by all.

The man is about 80 years old.  Let's not use this forum to pick on elders.

Thanks, was about to say something too. I don't think it's very respectful to talk about former forum members in their absence.

I find I think about him rather often. He and some of his minions gave me a very hard time in the beginning. But I also learned a lot from his posts and he was better later. I have no hard feelings toward him at all. I hope he is healthy and well.

Hi Oscar - I am probably the best person to answer your question other than Laurin. I am Laurin's cousin Dave and I also shoot for Shutterstock and helped out on the forums for many years. I went by the user name HHLtDave5 Over that time I think we helped a lot of people but also made some enemies for various reasons. I got very tired of the forums mainly because of the negativity. I also became upset with Shutterstock itself and its payment policies. But to answer your question Laurin is still alive and living in West Hollywood. He still shoots and is still involved in his music although not like he was in years past.

Now I have seen the posts talking about how much of his musical career was BS and made up. The best way to settle this argument is to go to the industry databases on film and musical works created by a person. These facts are not put in by any person or artist but rather what has been registered with the various agencies and unions. For the film work you go to the IMDb database. This is an online database of information related to films, television series, podcasts, home videos, video games, and streaming content online. For his music go to the Discdogs database. www.discogs.com (http://www.discogs.com) Going to these sites gives the actual industry facts and figures.

Laurin also gave various interviews over the years. These were done by industry reporters. One can be found at https://www.dreamchimney.com/interviews/Laurin-Rinder/ (https://www.dreamchimney.com/interviews/Laurin-Rinder/)

So, all I can say is read up on him, listen to people who actually know him and don't have an ax to grind or got their information second or third hand. I hope this helps.

Dave

While I saw him here a few times, I never bothered with the SS forums and have no real negative or positive view of Rinder either way... but... IMDB is basically Wikipedia for film, and the majority of additions and alterations are made by your average registered user.

Alterations and additions are usually reviewed, but that's more to make sure people aren't adding Brad Pitt as the main actor in the Matrix films, or Donald Trump as the director of Jaws. If I add myself as doing VFX on the Mandalorian (which I didn't) then it would more than likely be approved.

So there you go. And just to clarify... I'm not saying all that to give support to the idea that Rinder has falsified his credentials, that's the first I'm hearing about this to be honest, just to explain that IMDB is very much put in by people and artists.

Read back over the thread and can't see where anyone said he made up his music credits. Only a correction of what someone else posted. "He didn't own a music label", which I don't think he did or even claimed he did (not mentioned in the interview either)? and that he made up half the stuff he said on the forums. Weird to post a defence of something that never happened but okay. I agree that this thread is really unproductive and seems mean to anyone not acquainted with the personalities involved. Let sleeping dogs lie IMHO

I had a good forum chat with him multiple times. He helped me understand some issues with my earlier photos. He was able both to praise my work and express critique. I wish him just the best. He might be complicated for some people but helped to form MS community in its golden age...If you see him, send him our best wishes :-)

I do remember reading about Rinder's musical contribution to the film Enter The Ninja. Also, one of the SS forum members was watching an old movie (can't recall the title) and Rinder's name appeared in the credits for the music.
