VERY IMPORTANT! PLEASE READ THIS--
These E-mails are floating around currently.  Anyone using Internet mail such as Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL and so on.  This information arrived this morning, direct from both Microsoft and Norton.  Please send it to everybody you know who has Access to the Internet.  You may receive an apparently harmless e-mail titled "Here you have it" or "Just for you."   If you open either file, a message will appear on your screen saying:  'It is too late now, your life is no longer beautiful....'  Subsequently you will LOSE EVERYTHING IN YOUR PC, and the person who sent it to you will gain access to your Name, e-mail and password.  This is a new virus which started to circulate on Saturday afternoon.  AOL has already confirmed the severity, and the anti virus software's are not capable of destroying it.  The virus has been created by a hacker who calls himself 'life owner'.   PLEASE SEND A COPY OF THIS E-MAIL TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS and ask them to PASS IT ON IMMEDIATELY!

^^^I just use a few bits of free software and haven't had a problem for years.

It's just one of those messages that people use to flood internet.

Never ever send messages like this to others.
Nearly all are hoaxes and mostly they are circulating around the web for years.

Just made me think I haven't received the Neiman Marcus cookie recipe in quite some time.  Maybe old mass e-mails really do die.

That just reminded me of the "real" virus that was going around in the 90's. It disabled your virus software and when you went on line and put in a web address it would send you to another one. Luckily I had more than one computer and was able to do a search on it and get the fix I needed. It was all because I hadn't updated Windows. Once I learned about AVG I haven't had one problem with viruses. The free virus software is much better than Norton or Macafee!!!

Won't say free software is much better. It is good and sometimes it wins the tests. The bussinessversion from Norton used to be good in the past and nowadays McAfee is not bad. No software can find all viruses. As far as I know there is no really bad anti-virussoftware.
Only the ones that pop up on your screen to tell you that you have to download and install them quickly to protect you from viruses. When you do, you will find out that this software is a virus itself...
Antivir from Avira is also very good free antivirus software.
Personally I think that the leaks in software and the backdoors that can go around firewalls and antivirus software are the biggest problem. Security updates for ALL software on the pc are crucial, but propably not enough sometimes.
I am always telling people who ask me about security to put on the firewall in their modem/router AND use a password to be able to enter it.
Also use a software firewall and an antivirus program. Have a backup of their data and a double backup stored elsewhere when the data is very important.
Humans are the biggest problem! 
And when some go wireless they go wild! The whole city can have access! The chain is not stronger then the weakest link is...

Have you sent a postcard to the dying boy in Scotland?   That goes back to dial-up days.

Where's the "send this message to 15 friends and something amazing will happen, you'll get a free coupon for..." (or free something from) Microsoft or Disney. So tell me, how do these big companies know who you are sending emails to? I'd worry about that!

Especially love the one that flashes red and says "Your computer is infected with a virus. Install this software now." At which point I would have installed a worm or virus by clicking the link! LOL

How about the shipping company trying to contact you via email with a confirmation, which you need to unpack and run, to read. Hey wait, why don't they just send a PDF, and if they know who you are, and that they are shipping to you, how did they get your email address, but can't deliver the package? Doesn't this one fail the smell test?

I feel sufficiently warned for the last 30 or so years, that reading an email will not hard my system. However I do know for a fact that clicking a link or opening some attachment can do real harm.  Never open a zipped file from anyone, unless you know what it is! Even if it says you just won the lottery or a distant relative, you never knew you had, has suddenly left you millions of dollars.

People who write viruses these days want to turn your computer into zombie, not erase its contents.  They want it to send them your banking login info, it behooves them to leave your system viable so they can get the information back from the keystroke loggers, etc.

Our internet provider does what every provider in the world should have to do: control all incoming and outgoing mail for viruses.
They send a warning or close your account temporarily when you have a virus on your computer that is sending spam. You will be back on-line when you have cleaned your computer. If they all did so, this problem was over at once.

You are right. And what is even more dangerous is the using of leaks in software.
There's only one way to stay absolutely safe from this problems: not using an internet connection. But then you get some difficulties with on-line banking, reading your mail and uploading to stockagencies...

At least he had the courtesy of passing it on, rather it was real or not. Have you ever been expecting a package from FED EX then you get one of the bogus FED EX spam e-mails? Well some times you don't know rather it is legitimate or not if you are actually expecting a package. Let it go....
