This does not qualify as being unreliable.    But it is an issue nevertheless (I can not use them here, either).

PS: For me, a cheque is a very bad solution. Our banks charge a very high fee for every foreign cheque conversion, I believe it is a percentage, but the minimum fee is (or was) something like US$30. So you would need to wait for a very significant sum to reduce the loss.
