I just received a request to sell a web license.  This is new to me and I don't know what it implies.  I'll look at Dreamstime online help, but in the meantime does anyone want to offer advice or tips?

[update] I can't find anything on DT regarding what I'd be paid for a W-EL.  There's a single paragraph in terms & conditions stating that it allows a buyer to resell 10,000 online copies.

Can't make any sense out of this so  I'm inclined to just say 'no'.

You need more clarification on what they think a 'web license' is before you can respond.

"Web Usage (W-EL):
Electronic Items for Resale: this license includes the right to use the photos for webtemplates that are sold to more customers, screensavers, e-cards, powerpoint presentations or as wallpapers on cell phones. Maximum number of electronical items is 10,000 copies (applies as a total of each type of usage). If this amount is exceeded you need to acquire this license once again. The new license will provide you with the standard amount of copies.
This is an additional license to the rights included within the regular Royalty-Free license. Note that the other restrictions still apply."

So it's a license to resell the image 'electronically' 10,000 times.  I emailed back and asked about the little detail of the commission.   If it's just another RF sale, and they're going to offer me 35 cents for 10,000 uses, well no thanks.  Hope they at least reply.

if you click the extended license option on your photo at dreamstime, you should see that the w-el offers 50 credits. looks good!

According to http://www.dreamstime.com/sellimages page, you should see a max of $15-$31 depending on the level of the image if you are non exclusive.  By my calcs, you could get as little as $10 if they buy a 200 credit pack and your image is Level 0...  Minus any withholding tax, if that applies.

Sorry, I thought they were requesting an outside deal, not an inside-DT thingamajob.

That's the page I couldn't find.  Thanks.

It's level 3 so apparently - unless there's other fine print somewhere - I'd get $25.   I might go for it.

There is fine print - the table shows "maximum values" based on the smallest credit pack.  It is extremely unlikely a buyer wouldn't get a 52 credit pack or larger to make a 50 credit purchase.  In that case you'd get $19.20 (50 credits @ $0.96 each * 40% royalties).

It's always "funny money" with these guys.  It's never as simple as - this is what we'll sell it for, and this is what you'll get.   They've created their own currency - "credits" - with no fixed exchange rate.

I wonder if they'll even answer my straighforward question: "what would I receive for this sale"?  Only a clueless newbie would ask something so dumb.  :-)

Didn't you opt-in for EL sales automatically?

I thought DT would only contact us if a buyer wants the exclusive usage license (if ti hasn't been opted in the first place) but other ELs should sell automatically...???

I don't get it.

I'm confused too. It's not an exclusive license and you're not selling the rights.  It's just a license to resell the image electronically for web site use.  At least that's how I understand it.  I sure could be wrong.  It's not a real important image to me, so I decided to just go ahead, click the W-EL box for that image and see what I get.

Besides DT I'm not aware that any agency has a feature that allows selling exclusive licenses (unless you submit an image exclusively of course) so I don't understand why they would contact you for that specific license.

The ELs I get at DT just happen without any notifications.

When I submitted my images I didn't check the W-EL option because I didn't understand it.  I expected that as I learned more about microstock I'd revisit these sorts of decisions.

Ok that might explain it. Congrats on the sale!

I actually received 16.88.   Who knows how that number was arrived at....

I have been contacted a number of times about customers wanting the exclusive license, probably because I am opted out of it on all images.  I am sure if I was opted in I wouldn't be contacted.
