I realize it is going to vary lots by country, but I am curious how much everyone is paying their models... or do you just pay most of them TFP (time for prints) or nothing?

I always pay my models... I am making money from the images so I am happy to pay people for their work.  I pay people more if I have used them before and I know they will work well.  Recently I have been paying models $25-40/hour (depending on the country) for a 3-4 hour first-shoot and have paid up to $65/hour (3 hour shoot) for models that I know work well.

We usually make a compensation, for instance a couple of my models are fashion designers and I make 'em some fashion shots. When I pay them I either give them 20% of what the photos make in 6/12 months or 8EUR/h. I'm not going to do that 20% stuff anymore since I don't submit only to SS and IS anymore and it's just to much hassle to go through all that numbers. Besides that, I made such an arrangement a few times in the first 6 months of doing stock when I didn't know what the RPD is going to be and I really didn't want to loose money instead of earning it. Luckily I knew a lot of the models from before and they did make me a few favours. TFP works sometimes as well, but you can't get a good model with this sort of arrangement, or at least you can't do it more than once (usually because I tell then they'll be on a magazine cover - which they get, I don't hustle them, lol). They usually have their books made and tons of photos and don't need generic, boring stock photos (although I shoot that rarely, which is of course hurting my sales).

I don't really pay hourly.  More like a flat rate for the day.

This is because I don't use professional models, and the amount of time spent depends a lot on how long it takes me to get the right poses and expressions out of them.

Probably it varies from $20-40/hour depending...

$25-$35/hr depending on experience and how big a part they are playing.

danhowl

Generally $100 if they are part of a specific project (usually focused editorial for specific magazine or publisher) where I will shoot additional lifestyle scenes or edit more universal images from the editorial.  Otherwise, I do very selective trade shoots when both myself and the model are seeking lifestyle images.

SNP

$10-$20 per hour is all I can afford, but I always pay, even family and friends. I just find I get better models, better results and the expectations are clear. I try to plan my shoots well to maximize the time with models I am paying. doesn't always turn out, sometimes they aren't good, sometimes I just can't get the shot...but the ROI in general with hired models is good.

Move to Hollywood. They pay us. They always need Pictures. What I do Is in a 3 Hr shoot. I do some for them and some for me. works out just fine. My time is certainly worth as much as theres.

Mantis

Flat rate works best for me.  $50-$100 for 3-4 hours.

This is the exact question I was about to ask the forum.. good job someone else asked before me.

How does the TFP alternative work? How much % do you pay them back with each photo sale you make?

I have never used models outside friends/family but if it is TFP why would you pay back to models??

I don´t know much too but I guess if you gave them a CD with pictures so they can use them where they want, I guess that´s the job..

I find models that have the look i want. I ask them to model or have my GF ask them if they are young girls. There are alot of freak photographers out there and many attractive young girls are cautious. Since I will be training them how to model I do TFP. After a few shoots, and if they become good at modeling, I will offer a day rate depending upon their skills.

I shoot a nice portrait for the first shoot and have prints made so they have a nice gift and keepsake. Often they post it on Facebook or show friends and then I have other model hopefuls contacting me

luceluceluce

Mine are all training partners or teammates. Pretty excited at the moment because we just formed a state frisbee team and some of the new players are freakily acrobat. Such a wrench though - do it or photograph it : S (or third option surgically embed the camera - although that hasn't gone so well -bacteriologically- so far)
