Why do we need ITIN

Why do we need to provide ITIN to DP for contributors from countries with tax treaty with USA?

Shutterstock, Fotolia, istock, RF123, Canstock, Bigstock and almost every other microstock don't require such a condition. They have found out we don't need ITIN.

Applying ITIN is such a pain. You practically need to hire a lawyer or accountant in USA to help you with it which easily costs you $250. A friend has tried to do it himself. His applications were rejected by IRS 3 times with little reasons given.

According to DP we're going to face 30% tax withheld without ITIN.

never applied to an ITIN and so far not an issue, my tax form on DP is still on "awaiting" but on other agencies I have the same form, for me its 10% from US sales (not much actually from them, at least from what I see on SS), no need to apply to anything

Thanks luissantos84.

Please let us know how you go with your tax form on DP. I will not fill out my tax form there until this is clear.

I would have thought ShutterStock has irrevocably thrashed out once and for all that we don't need an ITIN.

Now we have to go through the whole circus again in DP.

Still pending here, No ITIN, form was sent the day it was announced so should have been cleared by now.

You don't need an ITIN. I'm not from the US (my country has a 0% tax treaty with the US) and I didn't have to apply for an ITIN either. Make sure you fill in this form as in individual to prevent any hassles.

So what's the story here? Anyone from outside the US got this sorted with Deposit Photos? Are they really keeping 30% of US sales if you don't have a tax ID number?

I've just applied to upload there (I'm in Australia, which has a treaty) but now that I see this crappy tax problem in view again I might change my mind :-\

thanks for the reply  :) but I'm still not clear on this. Do I have to supply an ITIN or not to get the treaty rate applied to US sales?
