Hello,

I checked out Leo's symbiostock website and have been observing this forum for a while.

I would like to sell my illustrations and photos. Eventually learn videography and sell  footage.

Can you sell footage using Symbiostock?

Thanks indvance

Hello!

At this time its not directly supported. Although you might be able to "cheat" it by uploading a zip and setting up a preview via some place like youtube. When we do put video in it will definitely need much careful consideration. As far as I know, its still quite a science to host video.

You guys have done a very nice job, I am also a video seller, can it use converted steam media like flv to show the preview? I mean, we can convert the original clips on our own machines and upload them to the website.

Thanks for the reply Leo. You guys are doing an awesome job in here!

I'm in for video as well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was already thinking...:

If we can use a shortcode for the preview the "most" work would already be done. A youtube link would work also but won't look as professional...

I don't have a problem creating my own watermarked previews.

Then the main file is uploaded as a ZIP file and a thumbnail would have to be uploaded for search results.

Would it be such a "huge" issue to include such a shortcode?

Since I'm not a professional programmer and have no clue about software development BUT knowing that computers can do ANYTHING I'd assume it would only take half an hour or so to create a solution for this...  ;D

Yes, making watermarked preview clip is just very easy, I remember that you can even use mplayer/mencoder to bunch process your files in just one command line.

Is there any updates on the video side?

I believe that Leo stated that he is creating a new version that will sell video (as well as other media), but it will take a while to finish.

What else can I say WOW the good news just never stops. First Sys and now video and other formats? Gotta love this for the independent sites and bringing control back to the artists.

CrackerClips got some stuff working with the current version - take a look

CrackerClips is linking through to Pond5 from his Symbiostock site. Good advertising I guess, but not the same as self hosting.

I'm not sure what you mean, but take a look at this clip - not the only one like this - which is for sale directly, not via Pond5

And there was a discussion about the two sites which had cobbled together something here

some of us have also gotten video working by using a plugin that avoids pond5

http://cascoly-images.com/pix/image-type/video-images/

basically you create a zip file with the video for download, then prepare a SWF format video to display

Great, but is the actual process for uploading footage on Symbiostock (I haven't used it for photos).
I used to have a footage website and it was incredibly time consuming to manage the still previews, footage previews and actual file for download. It's ok for a few files but not for a library of a few hundreds files.

note: the swf previews are not loading on my side

if I read the first sentence correctly, you haven't set up a sym site yet?

for videos, you can upload a video as a zip file and it will fit in the sym system.  the swf is one way to show previews

I agree about the multiple files needed to support video, but that's a problem with video sites, too

CrackerClips

Hi everyone!

I'm still messing around with the video side trying to decide how I want to move forward.  As Jo Ann mentioned, I do have around 40 footage clips available for license directly from our symbio site ( http://crackerclips.com/?s=footage&post_type=image ).

I have a major concern that's kept me from continuing tho and that's in regards to backing up the site.  I don't want to put in the days, weeks and months to get all our footage up and running only to lose the whole thing if something goes wrong and gets corrupted or the site gets hacked.  Having the site completely backed up with an easy way to restore is crucial.  If it were only still images it's not that difficult to find a service or a way to back the site up (I've got one now that automatically backs up every file on the server every night) but with the massive files we're talking about in regards to footage it doesn't seem to be that simple or straightforward from my research.  If I were to upload my entire footage collection to date we'd be looking somewhere around 600gb worth of data.

Since I'm no expert in this area and managing something that big makes me a bit nervous I'm considering using another service to handle the actual sale and delivery of the file.  In other words using symbiostock as you see it in the link above (symbio has great SEO) but each video would be linked on the detail page to where the actual deliverable file resides.  Photodeck would be one possible solution to handle the backend.  I'd be paying monthly for the service and the storage but still be receiving 100% of the sale.  I also wouldn't be responsible for backing up the files and maintaining the database on that side of the equation.  Sure it would cost me every month but the cost would be about the same as if I were paying monthly to have all that data backed up anyway.  Also, in the case of Photodeck, I could actually send in a hard drive and have it uploaded to my account, saving me literately months of uploading.

So until I get this all figured out, the bulk of our footage will be available through the Pond5 API we set up at http://stockfootage.crackerclips.com .
