Hi everyone,

I wanted to let you know that we at Pond5 released a pretty cool feature last month: Auto-tagging.

Now you don't have to mindlessly type in keywords for any of the video clips, photos, or illustrations that you upload on to our site. We'll do it for you!

The feature is built with super-fancy artificial intelligence technology that automatically scans your media and generates relevant keywords—saving you a ton of time and helping you make more money.

I see there's been some talk about it here already, but I wanted to create a central thread for discussion and feedback. Please let us know what you think of the system! Is it great? Is it awful? Is it working? Is it the coolest thing since sliced bread? We're listening, so please share your thoughts! :)

Hey Jonathan, long time no see...glad to see you back dude!

Of course, It is the coolest thing since sliced bread!  ;)

How about replying to all the Qs we asked here:

Sure thing! I'll try to provide answers wherever I can. :)

I think you are going to have a tremendous amount of keyword spam making your search worse.

A lot of the generated keywords are not relevant. So far I have not found it useful at all and at this stage I doubt any serious stock contributors will use it.

But I definitely like the idea:)

Why would it be mindless?
Keywording should be particularly mindful.

Jonathan, it is great! Thank you, Team Pond5!

Me

Saw this when it started and my experience is;

On all of my images I keyword what I feel is relevant and correct based on the image and my experience of effective keywords for those type of images e.g. for a landscape I may include the location, colours in the sunset, different words for sea e.g. ocean, tide, waves, etc.

What P5 automatic keywording is now doing is deleting some of my thought out and considered keywords based on knowledge and experience  and either not replacing them or replacing them with keywords it thinks are relevant.

I may input 30 non-mindless keywords and P5 delete 15 of them and replace with maybe 4 of what they think is correct after scanning my media.

I'm sorry, but tell me again, how is that good for me?

What data do you have that your AI is accurate to the content of the image and is not just adjusting keywords based on their content?

How does your AI "scan my media" to know what the content is?

How does it tell the difference between a blue sky shot and a blue water shot?

How does it tell the difference between a landscape image of crop fields in the Summer and furrowed fields in the Fall?

Is this thing optional?  All my work is already keyworded.  I don't need some AI screwing my work up.

Semmick Photo

I think its a neat feature if it works flawlessly. I think its great for beginners and unkeyworded images. I tested on one image and it was pretty accurate. But I have to agree with Me and Sean, most of our work is already keyworded and if it results in having to remove incorrect keywords its just a waste of time really. Please make it opt in / out so that we can choose to use the feature or not.

I think it would be great as suggested keywords to be able to quickly add some of the keywords in that you didn't think of. Automatically putting them in can be annoying when you have to delete a bunch. I have found it very accurate when there is a clear subject matter, and has helped flesh out more relevant keywords for me that  hadn't thought of.

Ronib

It is not good. I work harder now to remove the auto keywords and to insert mine. The keywords dont have anything to do with my files. Hope there will be a button to remove all keywords at once. It is realy frustrating.

it sucks. takes too long to delete the wrong words, which are most of them,,,, so I just delete ALL of them and add my own,
nice try P5 but not working

enstoker

I do not even think for a second to use suggested keywords.

How do you turn off the feature in P5?

You don't have to actually turn anything off, just don't use any of the suggested keywords if you don't want to.

I don't want to have to "manually" remove anything.  That's more work for me.

The article says "Disabling the Automatically Suggested Keywords on the My Preferences page." - Well, why didn't someone just say that?

Semmick Photo

I am with Sean, just say so instead of running around the bush.

Jonathan

Sorry gentlemen, didn't mean to beat around the bush. Just trying to offer as much useful information as I can. I'll try to be much more concise with my answers. :)

Don't mean to be rude or dismissive, but - based on what I know - this can't possibly work.  The current state of AI is nowhere near the point of being able to usefully keyword images by recognizing a wide variety of objects in various orientations, picking out faces and facial expressions, and inferring a meaningful context, with an acceptable error rate.  And even if it were, Pond5 couldn't afford the processing power.

It's not always accurate... but sometimes it is very surprising. I have had some videos where it correctly picked the species of bird in the video.

For me a really bad experience loosing so much time to remove all tue wrong keywords

Why you investing time and money into something that nobody wants to use? Why not investing in sales that everyone cries about?  :-\

Good entry from P5 forums:

Don't count on Pond5 fixing this problem. If they really wanted to fix this it would have been done the first week everyone began throwing a fit. At this point they send the occasional person to the forums to say that a fix is in the works to appease the contributors. They are hoping that given enough time people will forget about the problem and they will have successfully forced people to price 4k far below the going rate. I'm so fed up with Pond5 and their complete lack of care for their contributors. The only reason people are still contributing here is because up until recently they were very successful at selling our content. Now the forums are loaded with threads about how they are not having any sells. Pond5 had better be very careful. If their sales continue to drop people will not be willing to help them out like they are at Revostock. There's a company that understands communication and cares about their contributors. I can put up with low sales and hard times. I won't put up with the way Pond5 treats its contributors.

Me

Went to Preferences, switched off "Auto suggest keywords" but when processing uploaded images it is still adding and removing keywords, so unless I am doing something wrong the Preferences aren't working.

Noedelhap

I consider the automatic keyword tagging an annoying feature. At first I had to manually remove all automatic keywords, which takes time.

Point is, I know perfectly well which keywords to use and a computer simply doesn't. Keywording is a task that should never be automated; it generates too many spammy and generic keywords.

tickstock

Auto keywording seems like a non issue to me, it adds mostly relevant general words.  It probably takes less time to delete the ones I don't want than to type in the ones I do want so for me it's marginally better than nothing at all.  Either way it's not a big deal.
Just my opinion.
