Hi guys,

let's speak about keywording in Fotolia.

I found it quite demanding due to the fact that keywords have to be ordered. The graphical interface doesn't make the task easier. For instance the window of keywords is not adjustable in order to see all the words, so I spend lots of time to going up and down in the list. Generally I put on the top only few keywords (the most relevant) and the rest ones are more or less randomly ranked.

I sent some messages to Fotolia team explaining the above mentioned reasons but until now I didn't see any changes (let's hope).

Do you have any hints to share to make FT keywording less heavy?

I'm not sure if I understood your question correctly.
Keyword order matters not just at Ft but at some other agencies too (123). I always fill in keywords and description on the image file before uploading and FT will read all IPCT data exactly as they are on the file, so you don't nead to order them on the site.

I knew order doesn't matter at 123rf. In fact on the keywording page at 123rf there is no way to adjust order. Am I wrong?

I'm not sure of anything any more on these sites but I remember reading this somewhere in the past. I could be wrong, I can't prove it because it takes a lot of time to find something in all the mess at all agencies. If you look at the buyer site, keywords are in alphabetic order everywhere (even on FT) but nobody knows exactly how different search engines prioritize certain keywords (if at all).

You can only edit/change data as long as the images are in pending state.

Here is some info regarding 123 keywording, it uses the word prioritizing, not ordering, which for me means the same thing: http://www.123rf.com/guidebook/c04s01.htm

And now? How can I fix the issue? Should I start from scratch??

I find it painful too

Part of the submitting process is fast and smooth using those fancy things, you know FTP, metadata and stuff and then suddenly you're left with that little window to spend ages manually dragging each word up and down

And still, my main concern - I voiced it already a couple of times - is that FT doesn't leave a chance to update (add/remove) keywords once the file has been approved into the database.

Why is that so? No agencies seem to have problems with that..

I don't know about Fotolia, but when it comes to keywording I use Copy'em Paste clipboard manager. (for macs)

It saves a ton of time. I'm not affiliated with the company. Just passing on a useful tip.

You can't fix this unless you delete and reupload, it is not worth it.
Instead you can pay more attention to future uploads to do it right.
My workflow is: after I finish processing a batch, I start keywording all of them with a small and userfriendly software that lets me even batch keyword (InfranView). After that it takes just a few minutes to upload them to all agencies. After a while it's just routine.

I know we often make mistakes or forget important keywords when we first upload but it's also true that the huge keyword spamming on some agencies is the result of subsequent (abusive) keyword addition.

Yes, but there can be various solutions found to address spamming, for instance if we want to post-edit our keywords we could be offered a certain limit like adding not more than 5 keywords per photo or something like that.

In other words: there should be a compromise between not being able to post-edit keywords at all and unlimited keywords spamming.

I contacted the 123rf support and I asked the matter of keywords order.....

They kindly replied me so:

"The order of keywords does not affect the search results. Once batched into the portfolio, the keywords are arranged in alphabetical order."

Some relief! Hope Fotolia do the same and save our time.

Question on keywording.  Typically for any agency; does it help, hinder, or even matter if there is a space between the keywords when using a comma?  I've been following the sequence of; keyword/comma/space/keyword/comma/space/keyword......... Just and old habit, but it does eat-up character space on some sites.

Keyword ordering is not a big deal. Whenever I keyword anything I ALWAYS keyword in order. There are more places then you think that use keyword order, so it never hurts to just keyword it correctly the first time. If add the keywords in a certain order in your EXIF it will come up in the same order on fotolia.

If you use Adobe Bridge for keywording, the keyword order stays the same.

Besides Fotolia also Alamy and Panthermedia for example want to have keywords sorted by relevance.

Never tried Panthermedia, but Alamy definately came up with the hardest way of sorting the keywords
