This was a shock. Spent many hours using that site, overs so many years.

Terrible News, a good reliable site is lost.

DPReview.com is a wholly-owned, editorially independent subsidiary of Amazon.com.

https://techcrunch.com/2023/03/21/amazon-kills-dpreview-the-best-camera-review-site-on-the-web/

And: https://petapixel.com/2023/03/21/dpreview-is-shutting-down/

Even prior to Amazon's decision to close the site, DPReview struggled to maintain the staff necessary to keep up its lab, which was the basis of its extremely detailed reviews. The publication had multiple positions open through the end of 2021 and was attempting to replace its Reviews Editor as recently as last August. While the company had been able to fill some roles, those close to the situation at the time (who asked to remain anonymous) informed PetaPixel that the company was having difficulty filling the positions due to the stringent skill requirements of the job combined with the fact that they would have to be based in Seattle.

I'll echo the terrible news thought - even though things got a little less in depth after Amazon bought them, it was still a good place to go to get solid information about camera gear.

I guess Imaging Resource will have to do...

cobalt

That is terrible. I love that site!

Not the same as the detailed in-depth reviews, but they do good overview videos. Glad to see they'll continue

Yes, glad to see they found a home (I did wonder why they seemed to be in such a great mood on their "farewell" video). However, I never really followed PetaPixel....struck me as superficial and their podcasts were kind of cheesy (at least a few years ago).

Yes, basically the go to site for honest reviews that had some depth and the historic information was always there.

Last spring Amazon shut down Alexa, after 25 years of operation. This year it's DPReview, again 25 years in business. Maybe they've calculated that this should be the max lifespan of a website.

Amazon is 28 years old, so when are they closing it :)

sharpshot

I wonder what size the DPReview website would be? Probably huge, but if I could get an offline version, it would be great.

Funny, since I know that DPreview is likely shutting down, I feel less inclined to read the articles...not sure why.

The only good thing to come out of DPReview closing, if you can handle the sarcasm,

Dear readers,
We've received a lot of questions about what's next for the site. We hear your concerns about losing the content that has been carefully curated over the years, and want to assure you that the content will remain available as an archive.
We've also heard that you need more time to access the site, so we're going to keep publishing some more stories while we work on archiving.
Thank you to this community and the support you've shown us over the years.

What I will miss most is the side-by-side camera or lens comparisons.  You can do that at on-line camera shops of course, but only with cameras that are still on the market.  So where do we go now for a comparison between an OLD and a NEW camera ...

This is good news, but only if they keep the comparison tool.  Camera buying guides and reviews can be found everywhere, but I really liked their side by side comparison tool.

cobalt

That is fantastic news! It is one of my favorite sites.

Good luck DPReview!!!!
