The new iPhone App is up & running and available from the App store.

Has anyone tried it out yet?
Thoughts?

I just installed it on my iPhone and it works without any problems.

You have access to your account. You can see your total earnings and account balance. In the statistic section you can see

- royalties today
- earnings today
- account balance
- approved files
- downloads today

the chart show

- download
- royalties

with the data range of daily or monthly

First time I tried to search for image, the app crashed. In the search you separate by Photos, Illustrations, Audio. You can further refine your search with some options.

You have access to your lightboxes. In addition you can create lightboxes and can add images to it. You can send links to the image pages via email.

I don't think that you can buy the image via the app.

Bummer, I was hoping our sales would be doubling now because all the buyers would be buying images on their iphone!

Question 1: Is this app for buyers or for contributors?
Question 2: What's the difference between app and accessing via web browser?

Question 1: Is this app for buyers or for contributors?

I think that it is for both, as you can see your download and royalties statistic, and the buyer have the possibility to browse the images and manage their light boxes.

Question 2: What's the difference between app and accessing via web browser?

One of the differences is that iStockphoto's website is not optimized for mobile devices. On the other hand the app utilizes the limited real state on the screen better. That makes it much easier to navigate the database / site.

I think that there is the possibility of increasing sales (but not doubling). As it is easy for buyers to manage a lightbox for a project on the go, whenever they may have time. Most of us have always our cell phones with us, but not a laptop. It is just a new helpful feature. I wouldn't be surprised if we see soon from all the other agencies an app soon.

I have played with it a little today as well.
It is light years ahead in speed compared to running the browser on the iPhone.
And the images look stunning on the iPhone screen... my guess is they will be even better on the iPhone 4 with its superior display.
Much better than they look just using the Safari browser.

I don't know if this will have an enormous impact on sales, but it certainly is a needed evolutionary step for iStock and the micro industry.

It's very cool - although there are are a few things it would be nice to have that aren't there now. I especially like the search where one of my images is first in the list! It's best match order - one of the things it'd be nice to change is sort order.

I think the primary idea was for buyers to be able to search and lightbox images wherever they are - buying happens elsewhere. One can imagine some future setup where an account has pre-set some location for downloads to be FTP'd to and the purchase could happen on the iPhone and the downloads happen remotely (i.e. from iStock to the designated place) so the files were there waiting for whoever needed them. Life in the cloud will be wonderful when it all works!

The stats stuff is pretty useless right now as showing "today's" numbers is meaningless until midnight Calgary time and you can't see most recent downloads if you see your account balance has gone up from the last time you checked. I'd really like to see my downloads in chronological order (it's OK to skip all the sorts and such from the my_uploads page; I'd just like to see the last few files sold).

I'm really happy to see this - it may only be a start, but I think that if buyers feel this improves their experience with the site, in the long run it'll be another of those things that binds buyers to a site.

Finally! I just hope that other microstock sites will follow and offer their own iPhone apps - seems like it would be very popular with both contributors and buyers. Not sure about increased sales though...

I'm really hoping that all the sites develop it for the Droid too...the only way I'll switch to iphone is if some other company besides AT&T handles it. Here in the US we don't have a choice of suppliers.  >:(

For Android users there's an app to track your stats called LiveStock. You can't search thru the site like with the new iPhone app, but it's awesome for stats: http://www.istockphoto.com/forum_messages.php?threadid=80029&page=1

Updated my iPhone to OS 4 this weekend (what a pain!). The iStock app is running without any problems on my iPhone with the new OS.
