Title: Punctum Day
Post by: RT on July 04, 2008, 06:13
Don't know about you guys but I'm counting the days till 'Punctum Day'.

I've got a gut feeling that this year they are going to do away with the stereotypical 'weird and wacky' winning image from an exclusive, and the winner this year will be from a non-exclusive and it will be a run of the mill image that's just nice.

I've got this little baby that I know people have held back on rating (or buying come to that) until this years contest was announced:

What about you, got any treasures buried just waiting for the announcement of Punctum Day  :D

My betting is that it will either be a former image of the week that had lots of exposure  or will be something that one of the mutual ratings groups get together and vote for (in the same way that some severely mediocre images get onto the most popular page).

I've got a 1/52 chance if it's one of the former!

Can you really imagine that the 'image of the year' will be non-exclusive and thus iStock risks having that image available at many other agencies?

Would YOU allow that to happen if you were running iStock?

Of course not.

The winners will all be exclusives.  And that makes sense.

And the winning images will all be 'strange', unusual', 'weird', 'out of the ordinary', because news like that needs a wow or OMG factor.

I agree with hatman, although I wish I would get an image in the final selection I doubt and do not have much hopes that a non exclusive will win. However I must say the last years winners images were very well the award Photo/vector of the year worthy.

Well, i suppose there is a kind of incentive to be exclusive. :-X

No absolutely not.

And if I were running iStock I wouldn't either, but that was the point of my subtle post, why the pretence?

Why can't they just be more open and say it's a competition for exclusives.

As a non-exclusive I don't have any problems with them giving exclusives a better deal, I'd be surprised if they didn't, I hate the whole 'them and us' attitude, for me being exclusive doesn't appeal, for some it does, it doesn't make either party any better than the other.

Maybe next year they'll introduce image exclusivity and just have the competition open for exclusive content only.

I know this is an old thread, but it's kinda interesting to me that there has been no mention here about the fact that the Punctum winners this year were NOT all exclusives.

Interesting!  I didn't follow Punctum this year, but nice to know everyone has a shot at it :)

I didn't notice. It looks like the vector of the year was a non-exclusive.
