Don't forget that if you buy less expensive stuff first, you get to use it until you can afford something better and then sell the cheaper stuff to help finance your next purchase!

I picked up a set of Speedotron Brown line lights over 20 years ago.  These lights were not cheap (for me), but I saved until I could buy them, 20 years later I'm still using them. Good investment!

I have a couple of Elinchroms from 1994. I still use them now and then and they are compatible with my newer Elinchrom stuff. The price was quite steep at the time, but I have zero regrets :)

I'm still using my old Vivitar 283 but my SunPak 522 is broke.   ;D

you can buy used sets of Speedotron and photogenic on ebay for about 300.00; four heads, a power pack and you are good to go.  Add a set of light stands, a white sheet on the wall and fire away.
