Title: Upsizing
Post by: sauron on April 23, 2010, 15:30
I just noticed that Alamy requires 48MB uncompressed minimum. Does this mean that I just upsize my JPGs, and submit it? Or would I be best if I RAW, and processed it, and upsized it? Can you clue me in about this who upside business?

Thanks  :)

Answered in email, but in case someone else comes across the question.

I make the file the size I want it, over 48.2 MB, before I do any editing and edit as a TIF. (save the TIF) Save as JPG level 12 as last step.

The post at that link made me laugh.  "Our required file size for submitting Jpegs seems to cause an incomprehensible amount of confusion..."  Yes it certainly has, and that's in large part because of their incomprehensible requirement to upsize files to 48 MB (uncompressed) before submitting.  A pointless waste of everyone's time and storage capacity.

Cheers, I just experience the confusion around this subject.

there are actually 3 levels of confusion:

1. why upsizing, in first place
2. why using MB instead of megapixels? 8 bit x 3 colours (RGB) = 3 Bytes each pixel, so 24 MB is about 8 megapixels
3. 1K = 1024, not 1000

PS: the new limit is 24 MB, no more 48 MB

Let's also take into account that no site (besides alamy) allows upsizing.
